Happy New Year, Ladies! I have missed you all and have come back because to keep trying is better than sitting and failing. Will chat more later, but, I really do need all of you. And, I hope I can be a positive re-addition for you, too.

Ok...here we go again! I've been doing ok, but the past 2 months have back slid a lot. 6 months to lose 5 lbs and 2 weeks to gain it back! This 50+ metabolism sucks. Back to watching EVERYTHING and walking AND exercising. Happy New Year and good luck to us all!:smooched:

Happy, happy New Year to all. May 2014 be a blessed year for all of us!

Welcome to all of the newbies, this is a great group, just ask any of us. It is nice to see all the new year optimism.

I did not do too badly with my December goals although I did not always get in my 5000 steps everyday while on vacation. I did manage to lose two pounds. Yoo-Hoo! We spent Christmas with our DS and his family in Snohomish WA and a couple of days after that with our DD in Mountlake Terrace, WA. Home now and ready to get fit. Have gotten in consistent exercise for the last three days and ready to carry that forward into the new year.

January goals: 5000 steps per day on my Fitbit.
eat a salad at least once per day
write in my journal at least once a week

My mantra for 2014 is " embrace change". As of today I have switched to Medicare from my insurance at work. I learned yesterday that my job doing transcription for a local doctor will be ending as he is joining a large hospital practice starting January 3. My plan is to retire from my job as Aquatic Center Specialist at a major hospital therapy pool at the end of March and work per diem to make the transition as smooth as possible. I have been there for 21 years. Also need to work on the house as we would like to sell it and move to the west coast to be closer to our children. That is a lot of change and I am not always good at that. So I am going to endeavor to enjoy my additional free time and not fret about "what if". Sue in SD

Happy New Year to all my lovely friends here on mfp new and old....looks like we have lots of newbies here to shake things up.
This is just a quick bump as today is full of company and football games! I'll be cooking a ham, au gratin potatoes, black eyed peas and a salad later.

Sylvia: some dogs do need to watch lipid levels...some because of genetics, and some like Benny Beagle for who knows why. he's on a medication called gemfibrozil, which pre-dates the statins like Lipitor. It binds with the fats and then they are excreted. We will probably have to increase the dose because he is already on a low fat diet, well low fat except chocolate and donuts apparently!

OK I'm off! tomorrow is lunch and shopping with the girls and my best friend; our annual tradition. We're eating at Red Lobster (she pays so she picks!). I'll be sure to look up what I am eating because tomorrow it's back to the normal routine.

Enjoy the holiday! Take care Meg from Omaha where it is snowing now.

Happy New Year to all my Fitness Pals. What a wonderful surprise when the temps were in the 70's so DH and I went to play golf. I got two new clubs for my birthday (July) but just bought them in December. Man is it hard to hit new clubs when you haven't played for a few weeks. Also it got really windy (25+ mph) so we only played 12 holes. Being out in the sunshine made me realize how much I love to be active and so one of my goals this year is to get in the best shape possible. I don't know if I've ever mentioned it but I was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration about 9 year ago. After being in a clinical trial for 5 years, it was determined that the vitamins I was taking were the correct ones for the disease. I can tell that I've lost some acuity in my right eye so it is with great gratitude that I thank God everyday for my sight.
My goals for January are simple: Get back on the program.
!. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. ( I like Katia's plan)
    2. Log my food
    3. Get sweets and sugar out of my system.
The month of January will be devoted to accomplishing those three goals. My word for 2014 will be gratitude.
Thanks for hanging in there with me. I appreciate all your posts and am proud to be a part of your journey.

Hello Friends and Welcome to all newbies! Here’s to a great new year heading towards radiant good health and fitness.

Barbie: Thanks for keeping this thread alive and started with such superb examples of smart goal setting. Must say I like the one about playing with Bernie the best! He’s so lucky to have your attention and care.

Here’s my report on December goals:
    > Consume three or more servings of vegetables per day -- Done almost every day.
    > Feed my head by reading at least one book on health/fitness– Read “Superfoods Guide _ Eat Clean, Healthy and Simply…Naturally”.
    > While on the road, consume at least 35 oz of water before lunch – Done on first trip, but not on the second.
    > Set appointments for my annual physical and mammogram – Done. Fasting blood test is this Friday and other appointments all set for later this month.

My personal trainer has me drafting a contract and some long and short-term goals. I’ll be back here to share January goals later this week. For now, I am adopting a word for this year: RELEASE. Someone on this thread (so sorry I can’t remember to give you a shout out) shared about switching the words “lose weight” with “release weight”. I like this, and can see my way to blessing and releasing other useless and harmful aspects of my otherwise very fortunate life.

    fhardaway - welcome! Great resolution

Ann - welcome! Many people check in daily, mainly because this thread is so busy that if you don't, you fall far behind....lol Of course, if circumstances make it so that you can't check in daily, do it as frequently as you can. Good for you having a personal trainer. Which book are you reading?

    Anne - love your photo.

Anamika - what a lovely rhyme!

Did an hour of hula hoop on the Wii today. I'm planning to do "The 10 Pounds Down" DVD (one of the ones that I got for Christmas) tomorrow

    Ann - welcome!

fastforlife - I honestly don't know what intermittent fasting is. I do do HIIT on an elliptical where I sprint for 30 seconds and then recover for 1 minute.

christchild - good to "see" ya. I think I can tell you where those 4 pounds that you lost went to...lol

Heather - your NYE sounds so lovely. Oh, you're definitely going to achieve your plank goal When dh and I got married, a friend of his sang "Jumping Jack Flash". To this day dh is sorry that he missed it because we were having pictures taken. The party sounds really neat

Sue - keep coming in here for motivation

    Welcome to everyone new

Mary - I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter, but glad things are somewhat under control now.

DeeDee - your posts are always so upbaeat, I really love reading them

Margaretturk - good goal to limit TV watching. I don't watch a lot of TV, mainly because when I do I usually wind up falling asleep....lol

Patty - welcome. We're glad to have you

yanniejannie - your dinner sounds delishioso

Geri - wonderful NSVs. My name is MicheleLeGrand. There are a few Michele LeGrand's people have told me. My pic is the same one on there as on here. If you need to, I'll send you an invite (someone said there wasn't a "send invite" button on my page. Don't know why?

Debi - do you have the Wii Fit U? I need to look that up, I've been wondering about it. There was an article in our local paper that this adds new games to the WiiFit. I have the balance board but nothing else. Can I play different games with just the balance board?

Ann - welcome! I honestly think that as we age, our joints swell at least some and that makes getting our wedding rings on/off a challenge. I know that mine are a challenge to get off. When I got married I was 110lbs, today I'm usually in the mid 130's. That's not a whole lot of a gain from my wedding, but I have found that in the last few years, my rings are harder to get over the joint. Guess this is a good thing in one sense -- there's no possiblility of my rings falling off! Congrats on the loss!

brookehe - I always look forward to your quotes.

kathy - woo hoo on those A's.

Jacqueline - welcome back! My, you've certainly had a lot going on in your life this past year.

Carol - welcome! Just checked out your profile, you're from Burlington. My son graduated from Elon. DeeDee that's near you, isn't it? We need to get a - I don't know what to call it - 'central' NC MFP get together. That would be so cool

Ann - welcome to you, too. Congrats on quitting smoking. You've done something really great for your body

Katla - sorry, but I think you're going to have to share that "plateau queen" title with me. Right now I have gone up, but I know that I'll go down and then plateau. For the last few YEARS I've been gaining the same one or two pounds, losing those pounds. Up, down, up, down, it never seems to end.

    Molly - welcome back!

I just posted videos of our Christmas decorations on facebook, so take a peek.

Rachael - welcome back. Can you do some exercise in addition to your yoga? That'll probably help speed up your weight loss. Add some cardio and also some weights if you can

Juanita - its good to log your food all the time, even if it isn't that great. We all have those days. That'll be a big help to you

    Karen - welcome

Kelley - welcome. Baby steps lead to giant steps, so you are on your way!

Allison - that is so sad about your friend from the gym. Prayers for him

    Irene - welcome

Pat - welcome back! You've been missed. Hope you stay a long, long time this time around

meogge - good for you doing the spinning

Rose - welcome back! I'm so sorry for your losses. How heartbreaking

:flowerforyou: Today is clearly not a day for me to respond individually. I have read all the posts and am once again delighted that I won’t be walking the health and fitness road alone in January. It is wonderful to see so many new faces. I hope you will all take the time to come back long enough to feel like part of the family and then never leave us. Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond individually to so many. It takes all of us to keep this community going.

:flowerforyou: In 2012, someone on this thread recommended “The Happiness Project” by Gretchen Rubin. I read the book and it changed my life. Some of my resolutions that others have admired and taken as their own are lessons that I learned from the book. Because of reading the book, I’ve found several other books that have expanded my horizons and bolstered my spirit. Thank you to all of you who have recommended books. We are all better because of it.

:flowerforyou: My word for 2014 is “Mindful” inspired by “The Happiness Project”….I will seek opportunities to be present in all that I do

    January Resolutions
*dance at least three dances a day for extra practice
*yoga twice a week (three times would be better)
*play with Bernie the cat at least 5 minutes a day
    *don’t take things personally

    Happy new year!

Today I sat on my butt and listened to an audiobook all day long. I didn't even get out of my jammies till almost 4:00pm. So, I was taking it easy while hubby was out cutting limbs off trees that were damaged in the ice storm, and playing a LOT with the dogs. It's supposed to get cold and snow tonight, so he wanted them to have some fun while they can. He is so good to those dogs! He's good to me too.

Meg, my hubby is on gemfibrozol! Just like Bennie! Don't know why that strikes me as funny.

Welcome to all the new ladies! So many new faces!

Kelley, I also have a dog named Molly!

Ann, I'm not far from the Ozarks, in southeast Kansas. I hope you don't get too much snow there. It's snowing here now and headed your way.

    Good night all!

:flowerforyou: I think it is time for me to thank all of you in this community of women 50+ who have spoken words of encouragement to me in 2013. I started, I stopped, I started again and left on a hiatus and then came back. Yet, every time I came back you were there. Sometimes it was your turn to encourage and sometimes it was mine. This is what a community is made of. No one is on a high all the time and no one is at a low all the time. We are all at an age where life has taught us way to many lessons, and yet we are open to learning. How profound.

May your happiness and health reach new heights in 2014. And may the scale smile too

I had an ah-ha after I entered my dinner into my food log this evening and noticed the number of days I’ve logged. Today is my 440th day of logging meals on my fitness pal. I only thought I'd found an app to count calories. The habit of logging food has become a very important part of my life and my well-being. I am so lucky to have found the Women 50+ group to mentor me, encourage me, and each other. You have all become important in my life.

It seems that I am not the only one who feels a need to say thank you to each of you, and to Barbie, and to the lucky day I found "an app to count calories." It is that, and so much more.

Michelle, thanks for putting your videos on face book. Now I can see all those hours and hours you all took in doing that. How long does it to take it down?

So good to see so many more ladies wanting to share this journey with us other women!!!! Just climb on and enjoy.

I was able to do a full 10 miles on my bike at home today which gave me about 6000 steps. I needed to go to Walmart and Kohls to do some last minute shopping for Christmas Saturday. So I did some wandering around while at Walmart to increase my step total. Then at supper I told Michelle, youngest daughter that I was needing to look for some new jeans. My size 16 jeans are just really to big for me to wear now although when I do my laundry and hang up my 14's it still amazes me when I see what the legs look like. But the 16s are just to baggy. So she suggested that since she also needed to go to Walmart that we should just go after supper. So I knew I needed to do quite a bit more wandering to get my 10,000 steps in but I would try. So I looked and looked at jeans, all of them seemed like they were those skinny jeans which I just don't like at all. I have never liked the painted on look. Michelle said I needed to go some where that could have more of a wider selection and I would be more satisfied. She also said I would need to pay about double what I would pay at Walmart. I did try on one pair and they wouldn't even go up my thighs. But we walked enough that I could see I was getting closer to the 10,000 steps. So I jig jagged around to the grocery department to get the things she needed over there. Still wan't there so I just walked down each and every aisle, while husband and daughter just stood by and shook their heads not knowing what in the world I was doing. But when I left the store I was up to 10,200!!!!!! When we got home we looked at American Eagles outfitters and Old Navy websites to see what they have to offer. So we will have to make a date to go to the mall. That in itself will be fun. She is my number one cheer leader, all the time looking at me and saying how good I look. That's one reason why I am so excited for this weekend. My nephew hasn't seen me for 2 years and my brother hasn't seen me in 1 year. I've made big changes since then, not only in my physical appearance but my tolerance and what I can do. I made Charlie park way out in the Walmart parking lot. He always wants to use my handicap placard just to get a larger parking space to protect his car. Well when you park way out in the lot there are no cars around you.

I only have two main goals, but I have turned into a lazy freak. All I ask of myself is wk.out at least 3 times a week and stop eating everything in sight at night. Sounds simple enough but I cant get my butt in gear. I need to take it one day at a time find a reason to stop living the lazy live style I am. Just venting.

    Good evening ladies,

Joyce great job on going down a size. clapping icon we need!

I agree great to see so many new names on this site WELCOME :flowerforyou: and others who are returning:flowerforyou: . I know for myself I would post my goals once a month and then not come back for a month. I am finding coming and posting more often and taking the time to reply to others posts very helpful in my quest to become and to stay healthy.

It was easy not to watch TV today because we went to our annual white elephant New Year's Day party. I got the audio book Skipping Christmas by John Grisham. I know how tempting that thought Skipping Christmas can sometimes be. It also gives something to do since I will be watching less TV. LOL

Goal for Jan. watching only an hour of T.V. a day.

  • Hello,

Hope you all had a great New Year's Day. I was working but we got to have a little bit of fun with a potluck lunch. I kept my contribution healthy by making a fruit salad (red oranges, honeydew melon, red grapes, blueberries, and pineapple). I was about to drive to the store to pick up the fruit but decided to do the 10 minute walk each way. (It gave me the opportunity to greet a client whom I saw partway there.)

I didn't manage to stick to my vegan diet (quite) today. I had a little dairy in there. It's hard to avoid at a potluck and still have something to eat. However, I get closer and closer to being vegan all the time.

My back and my right knee were bothering me today so I didn't use the stairs at work as much as usual. I hope the personal fitness coach will address these issues along with a myriad of other issues.

For a few years I have been trying to finish reading "Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes". I would like to get on with it and complete it. It is actually quite informative and interesting.

I read the writings posted between yesterday evening and this evening and, I must say, as a newbie, I certainly felt a warm reaching out and welcome from the regulars. Thanks for that.

:flowerforyou: Anne, Vancouver area, British Columbia, Canada

A few goals for me for January 2014:

    - To lose 6 lbs by January 31 (to be well on my way to my personal Goal #2 for March 31)

    - To exercise a minimum of one hour, three times per week under the guidance of a personal trainer (already hired)

    - To stick as closely as I can to the vegan diet I'm trying to follow for the month of January (finish reading the book, too)

    Good morning lovely women!:flowerforyou:

Again a big welcome to all the new people. Logging everything and posting often is the key I feel. Good luck in your journey to be healthful.:flowerforyou:

In fact the regulars made me cry this morning, much to DH'S concern! It was of course a happy cry - I am so grateful to you for being with me on this journey. Katla - your comment made me laugh, "I thought I had just found an app for counting calories."   Barbie - you are the still centre in all of this - a big thankyou.:flowerforyou:

Sue in Shropshire - I lived in London for 40 years before I moved to rural Hampshire. Before that I spent one year in beautiful Shropshire.:flowerforyou:

Drkatie - when I started my planking I couldn't even get off the ground. The first day I got up there (elbow planking) at yoga I let out a shout of excitement! I have very gradually built up the minutes, month by month.:flowerforyou:

Katla - kedgeree is an Anglo Indian dish, from the old Raj. It is a curry spiced rice dish, using smoked haddock and hard boiled eggs. It takes all of my dinner calories, but I love it.

Pat phoo - welcome back!:flowerforyou: I was beginning to wonder where you were hiding!

Joyce - great walking! I wish I had been there. I would have marched round with you!

This morning I lost 0.5 lb. Hooray! I find it hard to believe as I am starting a cold and feel bloated, but there it is on the scales!:drinker: :drinker: (tea!)

Yesterday I got my memoir out and put it in a folder. Then I ACTUALLY WROTE a page and a half!:drinker: It has been a long time since I wrote anything as I have been so blocked with trying to write about my difficult childhood. Now, with the help of you ladies and THE HAPPINESS PROJECT I know I will do it. Yesterday I wrote a happy memory as a way of easing myself in.
Then I ordered a new, smart box file to put it all in.
Also I pulled out of my bag an old journal that I hadn't written in for 2 years. There are still many blank pages in it, but I feel I have changed so much recently that I didn't want to resume in the same old book for fear the old, moaning tone would infect me. I ordered a beautiful notebook that will do my new state of mind proud.

Katla and a few others - are you still doing the face exercises? I have been doing them since Feb and they are definitely holding my face up! I used to see one side was less uplifted than the other, but they seem to have evened out now!

Bye for now. Got to get on with my strength training.
