Do you eat your cake and cookies in the bathroom stall too?
I finally feel less alone
youre not alone.
though i had to switch to vanilla frosted cake...i had an unfortunate......"incident" while eating in a bathroom stall
Will you sponsor me and hold my hand?
Or just hold me.....yeah, just hold me. I'll feed you cake in the stall.
Anything you want
im here for you.
no really...open the front blinds. im *here* for you. *with* you....0 -
I'm tired of people claiming addiction for every little stupid thing...
Exercise some self control...it's food...you are not addicted to anything...you lack self control.
Carb addiction isn't a stupid little thing. Please don't insinuate that people on MFP are lacking self control. It is that thought process that makes people quit their goals all together because they feel hopeless. If weight loss was as easy and simple as having the proper self control, less people would be obese. There is more to it than lack of self control. There are real things as withdrawals from sugar and addiction to sugar.0 -

Detox. Srsly. Give yourself a couple of weeks off of the sugar. Instead, eat whole grains and fruit. It'll get easier.
Fruit contains sugar too, how is that 'detox'?
The sugar in a little debbie is not the same sugar you get from a fresh fruit. One has completely empty unnatural sugars your body will turn immediately into toxic fat because your body isn't sure what to do with it, the other is nutrient rich and immediately burnable. Plus fruit contains fiber that aides in digestion where a little debbie just "sticks to your thighs".0 -

Nobody said losing weight was easy or it didn't take work...that doesn't mean it's an addiction. And even if you do think it's an addiction, it makes no difference. Addiction or not, it does not alleviate the responsibility of the individual. That's the first thing you learn when you're an addict and you meet with others for help. We all make our own beds...own it!
If only you were right. Here is the research from an actual scientist:
http://esciencenews.com/articles/2008/12/10/sugar.can.be.addictive.princeton.scientist.says
Sugar may not be as immediately damaging as nicotine, alcohol, or other substances? But it also has life threatening long term effects if abused. Diabetes, Kidney Disease, Obesity, Heart Failure, even some cancers are all triggered by sugar addiction or bad fats (which also have addictive tendencies). I'm not saying we aren't responsible for our own actions? But the same could be said for anyone who smokes that first cigarette, drinks that first beer, or snorts that first line of coke.
Just because the effects of those drugs are more visibly destructive in a shorter amount of time doesn't make them anymore or less addictive then thing that can harm you in the long term. Sugar and fats affect brain function, endorphin's, and serve as a stimulus... why else would we crave them?
You are effectively damaging peoples recovery by downplaying the problem as if it's less important then your own past issues. I was addicted to cigarettes, my father was an alcoholic, my aunt is a hard core drug addict... the behaviors that sugar addicts exhibit are no more or less serious, same with food addicts. I was also both Bulimic and Anorexic in a past life.. my addiction was life threateningly real and just "taking responsibility" is a mere part of re-programming your brain to change your habits.
One thing you SHOULD have learned in your recovery is to NEVER lessen the struggle of someone else who is trying to change, but you've seemingly chose believe your journey is more important then those around you. That's really too bad.
This has just made me disappointed in the help given in this forum. Hmm.0 -

As a New Yorker, my problem has been turning down the bagels and the pizza.
Ugh they are so good.
For awhile I made rules for myself where I cut those foods out entirely because I wanted to prove that I could. But I ended up just sort of feeling jealous of people who DID eat them and they basically became romanticized in my mind.
What works for me now is allowing the bagel in the a.m. a few days a week as a treat, and a couple slices of pizza once a week, usually on Sunday. They don't feel like an obsession if you make them available, but within REASON.
I also get to the gym every day of the week, which means I can eat the treats, but I pay for it! I think that's the "not so secret secret" If you wanna play (with carbs) you gotta pay (in sweat)0 -

I'm skeptical on any physical addiction as well (although perhaps there's some form of mental addiction possible, whatever that means). That said, it seems like you're overcompensating and talking up your own previous addictions/struggles, when it's not really related to this thread. It's great you kicked whatever addiction you had, but you don't have to shove it in people's faces. Pat yourself on the back and move on.0 -

Food is just as addictive as a drug - if not more because you need it everyday.
I'm in the same boat with carbs. Terrible really but when I am having a bad day the only thing I get happy over is eating my carbs. *sigh*0 -
The peptides from gluten can react with opiate receptors in the brain, thus mimicking the effects of opiate drugs like heroin and morphine.
so yes, you probably are addicted. treat it as such. good luck!
What evidence of this in humans?
I saw a documentary on that once. Sugar addiction is a scary thing.
LOL! Such a suitable picture.0 -
You are not addicted.
Sure, you might binge eat... you might compulsively overeat... you might eat sweets as a reward, or whatever. That bears none of the hallmarks of addiction. All it does is point to an underlying mood disorder, or similar.
Instead of looking at what you eat and saying, "these things are addicting and I can't stop eating them" look at your lifestyle as a whole, objectively, and what led you to live the life you're leading.0 -

Maybe you should join my group

I am a huge carb addict!!! I relate it to being hooked on drugs. It's awful. Some days all I can think about and crave are cookies, cupcakes, cake................ Anyone have suggestions on how to rid myself of this awful addiction? I've done so good for the last 2 weeks and today I could eat every cookie, cake, etc in my sight. AAAAGGGGGGHHHHHH.
Realized I responded to this thread with no advice, bad me.
Try upping your fat intake (avocados, natural peanut butter, cheese, nuts) and eat more frequently. YMMV but eating that way is more satisfying to me. I use to eat a lot of sweets but am fine with a little fruit and chocolate these days.0 -
My eating was out of control before September last year.
I ate a lot of junk food.
I made a decision to stop over eating because my knee got injured.
Its not easy to stay stopped. Just for today, one day at a time I have stayed stopped. (poor english I know).
I get cranky and sometimes I don't know what to do with myself - this is when I usually started eating in the past.
I stayed away from zero nutritional foods (junk food) for over a month and only put them back into my planned day now and then.
Nutrition is the answer, foods that are good for you and if you want to lose weight use the goal setter provided by MFP it works for me.0 -

Someone needs to get off their high horse. You were a drug addict, so you are the expert on addiction. What classifies addiction? Addiction is the continued repetition of a behavior despite adverse consequences,[1] or a neurological impairment leading to such behaviors. So if I like to cut myself daily, and continue to do it daily, then I am in fact addicted to cutting. See what I did there? Just because you dealt with a drug addiction doesn't mean that other people can't suffer from addiction to other things that aren't drugs. Maybe you were just a junky who wanted to do drugs all the time and weren't in fact an addict. I am so sick of drug users claiming to be addicted. They know the drugs are bad for them, yet there they go smoking/injecting/snorting their crap. Sound familiar?
Carbs are addictive. Specifically sugar. http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/health/researcher-sugar-addictive-cocaine-obesity-diabetes-cancer-heart-disease-article-1.1054419
The sooner you quit trying to have everyone feel sympathy for your drug addiction past and put that out of the way and accept that people can be addicted to other things besides drugs, the sooner you can realize that it is a real problem.
You said "And even if you do think it's an addiction, it makes no difference." So I take it your drug addiction made no difference in your continued use. You wanted to do your drugs right? This is MFP where people are as a community hoping to help and teach each other better ways of eating healthy. IF you were in an addict program the first thing you do is ask questions about how to curb your addiction right? Same as the OP did here. Take your "I'm a true addict, not you" attitude back to your program and tell them you are addicted to being a jerk to other people.0 -

This is an addicting thread....
Quitting a sugary diet can cause low mood and cravings which have been reported as being as strong as the cravings addicts feel for alcohol or cocaine. This is because sugar triggers the release of opioids and dopamine in the brain causing euphoria and giving a sense of reward and pleasure. Because of this the brain sends messages for more and more sugar to continue the pleasure, this can also need to seeking greater pleasure from other related drugs such as alcohol.
