 : Hello to all the great friends who have been part of this thread and welcome to all the new friends we’ll be meeting this month.

:flowerforyou: The name of the thread is Women Ages 50+ but all women are welcome.

 How did you do on your goals and resolutions for January?

 What goals and resolutions have you planned for February?

:glasses: I like to make resolutions that I can reasonably expect to accomplish.

January Resolutions (with end of the month comments)
*dance at least three dances a day for extra practice (not so much at the beginning of the month but a lot more at the end)
*yoga twice a week (three times would be better)—(some stretches but no formal practice for the last three weeks)
*play with Bernie the cat at least 5 minutes a day (not every day, but often)
    *don’t take things personally (excellent)

    February Resolutions
*restart strength training from the beginning
    *yoga once a week
    *submit tax materials to accountant
    *update important information list
*act the way I want to feel

:flowerforyou: Please join us even if you don’t make monthly resolutions. Connecting with other women on the same journey has helped me lose weight and keep it off.

:drinker: I hope we’ll continue with the custom of signing our names (or alias) and location to make our sharing more personal.

 Barbie from beautiful chilly NW Washington where the days are getting longer

I'm over 60. I keep my sugar (try my best) at 10 percent of my calories, which is 30 grams and use my kettle bell for at least 15
    minutes each day.

I'm just one month in and lost 9 lbs, but know that I'll start losing more slowly. I can use all of the support I can get! I'll do my goals, etc. later, but wanted to mark this thread so I don't lose it!!

Hi Ladies from sunny Bradford, England...

I am 1 month into this plan and I have lost 7lbs... I am so pleased with myself..

A lot still to go but I have gotten myself a swimming pal and try to walk as often as I can.. Very painful on feet with arthritis...

    My goals for February.

Stay on track and keep logging in my food and exercise.
    Get myself a flat.
Keep walking and going to my leisure club to swim and cycle.
Keep praising my wonderful Father God..

Hoping to lose another 5lbs at least this month too.

Good to see all your journeys here and will try and keep coming back to you as often as I can make it..

Kay: Congratulations on tying your own shoes! PT can be a real blessing. DH didn’t like it but he gained a great deal of mobility when he went.:flowerforyou:

Viv: Congratulations on your lost pound!:flowerforyou:

Cynthia: Congratulations on your lost pound. I like watching the birds at our feeder, too. In my case, they’re hummingbirds drinking sugar water.:flowerforyou:

Gloria from Metro Detroit: Don’t be sad about losing a pound or two all month. It comes off slowly if you’re doing things right. Crash diets are crash and burn diets. Nobody can make permanent changes for the good that way.:flowerforyou:

Amanda: I like pickled beets in salads, but am not crazy about the fresh ones. They make wonderful additions to soup, though. They add color and a dash of sweetness. Hiding beets in couscous and among other veggies is a good plan.:flowerforyou:

Linda in N. ON: Five minutes of walking, rest, and five more minutes of walking adds up. I’m sorry you have such a big challenge to your health, but I think you’re just the person to work your way through it and back to better health.:flowerforyou:

Joyce: A clothes swap is a monumental idea. I donated my too big clothes to the senior center thrift shop. The shop helps to support meals on wheels and other activities of the senior center. I happened to be there one day when they were having a sale, and saw that a lot of people were shopping, including men, women, and teens. I feel pretty good about contributing. DD loves to buy second hand clothes in good condition and has ever since she was in middle school. She likes her closets packed. I’d rather wear a few things over and over than stuff my closet. Everyone is different. There aren’t any “right” or “wrong” answers.:flowerforyou:

Joanne Moniz: Welcome to the group. Where are you from?:flowerforyou:

Laurie from St. Charles MO: Welcome!:flowerforyou:

We have plans for fun today. We’ll visit the Chinese Garden and enjoy some of the Chinese New Years activities. There is a tea house that I’d like to visit for tea and almond cookies. The tea house may be full, so we’ll be taking our chances. Because this is the Year of the Horse, they also have miniature horses on display courtesy of a local club. There will be Lion Dances, martial arts demonstrations, and the beauty of the garden itself. We visited the Chinese Garden for the first time during Chinese New Years a few years ago and have been members ever since. I was astonished at how many blooming plants they had in winter. I planted a few winter blooming things in my yard, and have two bushes including a Camellia blooming right now. They bring such pleasure. After our visit to the Chinese Garden we’ll go to a Murder Mystery dinner theater performance that was a Christmas gift from DD. I’m looking forward to the day. I've been trying to make reservations for over a month, and they finally had two seats available.

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” Thomas A. Edison

    February goals:

    1. Log every bite and swallow.
    2. Move more: cardio at least 3 days a week and strength training as soon as I am able.
    3. Water: According to an article I saw on facebook, drinking water at certain times maximizes its effectiveness for the body. I’ll work toward following these guidelines:
    * 2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs
    * 1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion
    * 1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure
    * 1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack

Good morning! It's still icy and cold here. Hubby has offered to drive me to the studio in a few minutes so I don't have to drive on icy roads. Such a sweetie!

I must have gone a little nuts yesterday because I went way over on my calories, but still below when I added my exercise, so this morning I had not gained. Whew! Not a great way to start the month. I think it was two 100 calorie fudgescicles that did it. Today I won't get to the Y, so I'd better watch it.

I did not sleep much last night. Finally got up about 5:00. Hubby wasn't sleeping either. Not sure why. We didn't go to the lake cabin yesterday because of the ice, and so it was a little strange to be here on a Saturday night. So today I feel tired.

Welcome to all the new ladies. I'm looking forward to hearing more about each of you.

Well, it's the BIG day.........the one we've all been waiting for...........DRATS!!!!! Six more weeks of winter. As a Pennsylvania native (long gone), I apologize but take no responsibility for that dammmm rodent.

Anyway, on to the other big thing..............BRUNO MARS!!!!........should be a great show!!! As for the game.......since the Coyboys aren't in it, I'm going for the SeaHawks, just a guess, and with a 50% chance of being right, those are better odds than the lottery.

Those of you with the 2 winter storms coming, you have my sympathy; after being stuck in the house for varying numbers of days the past two weeks, I am OVER winter!!!! Most winters we don't see even one single flake. Yesterday we had a good melt and I can now see actual ground instead of snow. My daffys popped up uder that snow and are up three inches!!!!! I can't tell you how happy seeing them makes me; it's such a promise of Spring.

LinC..........Gramma god; loved that!!! Out of the mouths.........

Nancy..........I'm sooooo happy your DD picked the instate school. As far as food goes, my DDs college food program had a bigwig chef who made fantastic meals they all loved.............out he went with cost cutting her second year and now they have some absolutely horrible food service--"Avodark" or something like that, which in the past 2 1/2 yrs. I have heard nothing good about from ANY of them...........of course, that could just be the contrast with the chef.

    Best to all,

Hello ladies of the 50+ club, I am new to this posting so I am not sure anyone is actually even going to read it or if it will even show up. I am back to using MFP after a long break and several pounds gained. I know what is needed to change my behavior and get healthy, but I haven't been consistent. I seem to gain and lose the same 15-20 pounds. I am on a path to stick with a healthy lifestyle now as the birth of my grandson is any day. The spirit of my grandmother has been around me (not literally, but in my thoughts) as I approach my 55th birthday in June. She died suddenly one evening when she was only 55 years old. She so loved being a grandmother, but didn't get much of a chance to be one (I was only three or four at the time). I don't want to miss out on being there for my daughters and especially for my grandson. Sorry for being so verbose. I am working on my "change" partner list as well as "support" list. Thanks for responding and for sharing your journey. Sarah:heart:
  • Well, I ate too many sweets and today my toes hurt. I think there might be something to the sugar-arthritis connection. While I was doing better avoiding it my digits were fine.

DD is doing her online school, and I bought her the 30-day shred DVD to use for her PE credit. She did one session, and was so sore! I suppose I should give it a try too, so I have an idea what I am doing to the poor girl.

My garden looks dumpy and bedraggled, but I did find some quince to bring inside to force.

Hubby is waiting for me to go for a walk. Go Seahawks!

Sarah you have a strong motivator to get and stay healthy. Here to help.

Went to see the snow sculptures for Winter Carnival ., Last week was the ice sculptures. Our favorite was the buffalo nickel. Sang today in choir. It was challenging to find the right place to breathe in the song.

Claudia !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know you are doing a great job on your diet, too.

Happy Sunday! It is a beautiful day here with partly sunny skies and currently 63 degrees. Guess who is going out for a walk as soon as her lunch settles! It was so nice when I left for church this morning that I was greatly tempted to skip--"skip" church and then "skip" outside (for exercise). I can mostly breathe again today but not sure I'm up for my usual distance walk. I think I will still be easy on myself and take it a bit easier. And, I am determined to get all the way through the 30-day Shred with 5 lb weights and no resting. Almost made it Friday (missed two lifts at the end), so I should be able to do it today since I feel better.

I ate a piece of cake today. :ohwell: My son left it here Friday and I have been seeing it all weekend. Today, he came home from his dad's and said I could have a slice. Why, oh why, did I waste calories on a freaking piece of gluten free cake?! The frosting was delicious but the cake tasted vaguely like cornbread. Ah, well, now I know and it is no longer a temptation.

Cool NSV this morning! There are usually a couple of random folks who will remark on my weight loss at church (makes me feel good) and today was no exception. However, the NSV came when I was sitting down after a hymn and, as I smoothed my dress tail down, I felt this hard lump. It was a frontal thigh muscle!!! I have quads!

I haven't yet set goals for February, so here goes:

    1. Get in at least 10,000 steps EVERY day and shoot for 12,000.
    2. Complete the 30-day Shred series.
    3. Work hard at having my house ready to go on the market by mid-March.
    4. Clean out my undies drawer so that I can quit changing my underwear four times every morning to find some small enough!
    5. Hopefully, drop another four pounds.
    6. Find time for myself.

    afternoon ladies~
well I am sitting down for a few minutes..
slept really crappy last night and was up at 6,had my lemon water and then went grocery shopping, spent 200.00:noway: but alot of the stuff was B1G1, OR B1G2 free so saved 116.00 and loaded up the freezer. after I put the stuff away I made mozzerella stuffed meatballs, macaroni and cheese, beef stew and carrot cake cupcakes. got a free rottisere chicken ,so we had that and I had a spoonful of Mac and Cheese.
froze the rest of the stuff so basically I am set for the week...
DH feeling yucky again,he washed and waxed the kitchen floor and stripped part of the family room floor and washed that too, vacumed the car's.. Now all the yucky stuff is coming back.
I did go see my brother,he will be sober 1 month the end of the week, and I am so proud of him.. Jean his fiance is reading the 24 hr a day book,so i think it is helping them both. I did print him the pictures of him when he was in the hospital ,just for a back up if he decides to take a drink..
well I have to run out to the drugstore and get the boy some more cold meds..
and Joyce I think you were asking about the Laughing Cow garden vegetable, it is a cream cheese spread that comes in little individual wrapped wedges in a round carton, they are only 45 calories and you can spread them on most anything, very yummy
they have all sorts of different flavors and light ones that are only 35 cal. a wedge.
well ta ta for now, and how did I miss Pat(phoo) didnt see her post:grumble:

:flowerforyou: Anamika, I’ve failed so miserably making yoga part of my week, that I thought that aiming for only one day a week would make me more focused and improve my chances of success……I believe in making resolutions that have a reasonable chance of success.

 Kay, you have a fabulous attitude about your recovery from your injury…you’ll probably learn some great lessons along the way.

:flowerforyou: Viv, I weigh myself three times a day and record two of the weights. I’ve been doing this for years and I’ve read that many people who are successful at weight loss and maintenance weigh themselves often. The only reason it can be bad, is if it causes you to change your behaviour because of what the scale says or makes you too emotional.

:flowerforyou: Amanda, good luck following your doctor’s orders.

:flowerforyou: LinC. The quinoa/sprouted rice blend is something I buy at Costco…..I never thought of stuffing the chicken…maybe next time I’ll stuff it with the rice and see what happens.

 Katla, your Chinese New Year day sounds like a lot of fun.

:flowerforyou: Sarah, many women will read your post and welcome you to our friendly community……we all have this weight loss adventure in common and you will find other things in common with some of us. I’ve been posting with these women for years and they have become family to me.

:flowerforyou: Kayzoola, my garden looks messy too, but there are tiny bits of evidence that the peonies and daffodils I planted in October are planning to grow.

:flowerforyou: Jettypeople, what worked for me was to plan and log my food for the day and stay with the plan no matter what. I make sure that everything I eat is nutrition dense so my body will be nourished……don’t worry if it is less than 1200 calories, just make sure it’s good for you and keep on every day, no matter what.

:flowerforyou: Margaret, snow sculptures and ice sculptures sound great…….when I was in college in Minnesota many students made cultures………where I live now, there is a sand sculpture event in July.

 Carol in NC, doing the 30 day shred with 5 pound weights is awesome

:flowerforyou: Rose, as a recent back pain sufferer, I have great sympathy for you-:brokenheart: --My chiropractor recommended walking as a recovery tool---10 -20 minute segments instead of 90-120 minutes.

:flowerforyou: Gmom, I don’t take notes, I open a Word document and go back and forth between MFP and the Word document and write replies as I go…….if I get interrupted, I can save my document and go back to it later, then copy and paste it onto the reply box on MFP and add the funny faces.

 Grandmallie, it’s good to hear that your brother is nearly a month sober…..is he going to a lot of A.A. meetings? Are you and Jean going to Al-Anon?

:flowerforyou: We are getting ready for the Super Bowl by doing our chores early so we can relax later. I do laundry every Sunday and do the folding while watching TV. I am grateful every Sunday for my washer and dryer ever since I got my first set in 1979. Jake moved firewood from the back porch to the breezeway and vacuumed the filters in the furnace and air cleaner. Bernie and the dogs napped.

:flowerforyou: Jake bought two bags of chips for himself to eat with the salsa he makes as his treat for the Super Bowl. We’ll have a Simple Truth Organic feta and spinach pizza for our big meal as a special treat.

 We have friends coming from California tomorrow midday and they’ll stay until Wednesday morning so we’ve done a bit of housecleaning and bought some extra food. They’ve been here before and are fun to be with.

I am new to this forum so forgive me as I get to know all of you.

We had a nice day, though chilly in IL. Ran errands, cooked dinner and am settled in to watch some great commercials! I had 1 piece of pizza for my Super Bowl treat.

Day 2! Good, quiet day here in VA... finally warming up like it should. I loved having all those snow days, but am ready to return to normal, be able to walk outside without freezing and feel rejuvenated by the sun. I remember living north of Chicago where it really didn't warm up until late May... how did we do it? Oh, I remember... comfort food!!!

Hope you all have had a great weekend!

Sharon, I'm afraid I did more than a piece of pizza. I normally do very well in keeping away from any food that's bad for me but I am so tired of staying at my same weight and not being able to get above 1200 calories, sometimes not even 1200. So I went against all of what my diabetes educator taught me and ate over my calories and carbs. My daughter bought a family dinner from Fazolis, the chicken parmesan and regular spaghetti. It came with bread sticks and salad. I took one of the pieces of chicken, remember it's breaded, a little bit of the pasta, white, and one bread stick. So those were the bad things. My husband and daughter took their salad portion and then I just took the rest, no croutons or cheese. I put a little bit of light ranch on it. Later I had one of the 100 calorie Weight Watcher's fudgecicle. So I WENT over. I'm not sure if I believe in the theory of eating over sometimes to jump start your metabolism but I'm just plain frustrated. I used the Super Bowl as my excuse. Wait, I don't even like football. But it's the Super Bowl Joyce, everyone watches the Super Bowl. It's a time to party. Well it's done, over, gone. Plus the team I would have rooted for, if I liked football was really bad. You all know which one I am referring to. Yes, the commercials were cute. After all, that's why some people watch the Super Bowl, isn't it.

So I gave up and let my husband have the TV, my daughter went home, she is the one who is a huge football and Peyton Manning fan and watched HGTV. During half time I got a beach ball and we threw it around. I was the one throwing and trying to catch. I am Miss Supper Uncoordinated USA, so I am running and jumping all around the family room. So I got some extra exercise.

Sharon, where in Illinois do you live, I live next to you in Indiana. The snow pretty much missed us. From the looks of the radar map it hit my daughter bad in Lexington though. They may have to go to school during spring break now

Nancy in AZ - feel better fast. Sending you virtual chicken soup

barbie - one part ofme would love to give up baking, but I know that that's impossible. Vince likes his baked goods too much. Oh well..... I'm thinking that I'll watch the SuperBowl...mostly for the commercials. I still don't know the defference between offense and defense, but I do like watching those guys in their tight pants running around the field. Also, I used to live in East Rutherford, am curious as to how they are going to manage. I'm planning to have some raw baby carrots and a big dish of air popped popcorn. Then I'll have some of Jill's hot chocolate. Which reminds me that I should probably make some more. I found that I can put it into this insulated cup which doesn't have a handle and so I will be able to put it into the cupholder in the theater seating. Update: There was a picture of the Municipal building in East Rutherford. That's where wew got our marriage license!!!!

Brenda - what amazes me is how few calories you can get when you have lots of veges and you still eat a whole lot, yet when you have a pastry, those calories REALLY add up.

katla - I always have trouble baking with yeast. I just can't seem to get it right. So therefore I tend to use baking powder/soda as my leveners. That's good that you were able to pass on the responsibility. Many times it's good to have someone new doing a job, someone that has a new perspective. Hope your murder mystery dinner turns out as much fun as mine did. Do you have to dress up?

Katie - you never know what you have until its gone. Yea for you tying your shoes!

Last night I don't know how many times I had to say to myself "what you eat in private you wear in public". Thanks so much to the person who posted this. It has really helped me

Joyce - how wonderful that you got to church again. I'd love a clothes swap

Poppy - welcome. I love exercising in the pool. I feel that I am so much more flexible.

katla - I have a reaction to the red beets, but I LOVE the golden beets. Just wish the stores around here would carry them. Oh, there is one store that does, but they are SOOOO expensive it isn't even funny.

Boo Boo Boo - Vince just told me that Puxatawney Phil saw his shadow. Enough already!!!!

Sarah - welcome and congrats on the impending birth

jettypeople - there are days when I don't have any desire to eat all my 1200 calories. On those days I just listen to my stomach and don't eat them. Because on another day I'll go over my 1200 and will certainly make up for it. Welcome to the land of plateau land, we've almost all been there at one time or another (or in my case, STILL there)

Carol from NC - so glad you're feeling better. What a cool NSV to feel your quads

laurel fisher - so sorry you're in pain. Back pain is no walk in the park, that's for sure

Alison - a free rotisserie chicken! Now that I can go for! Smart shopping

barbie - I took a shower early and we had dinner early so that we could go watch the SuperBowl. Have fun with your friends

Joyce - I'm not a football fan, either. I had to keep asking Vince questions. I didn't even realize that the first quarter was over!

    Hullo...
Didn't watch any super bowl....Downton Abbey, yes! I also watched some Flying Nun marathon on antenna tv. lol.
Cleaned the bathroom, took everything off the counters and went through DH's dresser. Came up with two trash bags of socks, shorts, T shirts, junk, he is such a hoarder (not in the TV Hoarders way) he just doesn't think to throw anything away. I found bleached out swim trunks, about 25-30 pairs of old socks, tennis shorts from the '80s...you know, the short ones, lol, and all sort of junky airline and hotel SWAG. He will be so surprised to see how neat the drawers are. I even emptied one and kept it empty. You know what? He will not even know what I threw out. I have painters coming soon to strip the wallpaper from the flood damage, and I am going to have the bathroom painted this time. No wallpaper. I am thinking of converting a cabinet, which has a door, into an open shelf and put towels on the shelves.
Baked 3 loaves of banana bread today and ate one all by myself, talk about how gross I feel now especially after reading someone mentioning sugar and arthritis...sugar feeds the inflammation. Needless to say, I am downing the water tonight!
    Good night all.

Hello all you Beautiful Incredible Ladies :flowerforyou:

I have been absent recently from the board mainly over frustration and some shame :embarassed:

I have not been a good *player* watching intake etc.
I yhad lost a few pounds but tonight just made it all very real.I got into my hubby's car (chevy cavalier) and I used to really struggle with putting the seatbelt on.This night was awful-:embarassed: I had to set the seat all the way back and nearly lay down to buckle in then struggle to get up.I did it and made it home and sat and cried.
I have no one to blame but myself-I had my pity party and the *well I might as well eat all that candy my neighbor sent over*-BUt I didn't.

    so February goals
1: stop the whining and begin the winning.
2: Back to more fresh veggies and fruit
3:back to my hot water and lemon in the morning.
4: 2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs
    * 1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion
    * 1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure
    * 1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack
    5:LAUGH.

    Thank you all.:heart::flowerforyou:

Molly in West Virginia. I think we all need moments like you had in your car. It's kind of like an 'ah ha' moment. So now you can use that frustration you felt over fighting with the seat belt to encourage you tomorrow. It's baby steps.

One reason I fell in love with my husband many years ago was that if I watched a game with him, didn't matter what kind of game baseball basketball football, I could ask him anything stupid and he would answer it patiently. Only sport I can understand is golf! Now I wish that same man would be as patient with me. But he didn't make me feel stupid at all for asking what defense is, offense, line man or what ever. Olympics start this week!!!!!!!! Almost 2 whole weeks of winter sports!!!! I may not know about some of the sports to begin with but by the time it's over I understand it some. Of course by the time the next Olympics rolls around I won't remember again. I don't think I will ever enjoy hockey though. Football is rough enough. Hockey is legalized fighting
