Sorry this might be a bit of a contentious issue.

some do and some don't. I do. Is this a poll?0

It's a curiosity, I've been following threads for bout a week and all I'm hearing people advise is eat less calories than you burn (with no other info or advise to go with it).0
-
That's it in a nutshell. Eat less that you burn.
You can't target where you lose it from though.0 -

Care to qualify that statement? I'm not talking about what part of the body you loss fat from by the way.0 -
Well the calories in vs. calories out way of thinking is pretty easy to understand and it works. Fat stores are there to be burnt when we don't get enough food so it makes sense to eat less to lose more fat, even though that's not necessarily the case and there's a danger of losing muscle if your calories are too low for too long.0
-
Qualify it how? You mean fat or muscle?
If you're not weight training then it's likely you're losing 50% fat and 50% muscle.
If you are you can mitigate how much muscle you're losing.0 -
Sadly it comes off my face rather than my hips or is that not what you mean?0
-
The advice is all over the board. People aren't just saying eat less than you burn. They're also saying, get enough protein and fat, and exercise your muscles to minimize lean body mass loss while losing.0

Big tick for you. ????0 -
I try to lose weight from my body.0
-
Yes, I care. I've worked hard to build some muscle, the last thing I want to do is lose it all when I'm cutting.
But some people only care about the number of the scale going down and do not stop to consider what they are losing.0 -

I started out pretty ignorant about proper nutrition, what eating healthy meant and how the body loses weight. After reading many different opinions on here, I began to do my own research and realized that yes, I do care where my weight loss is coming from. I want it to come from body fat with as little muscle loss as possible. My end goal is not to be smaller, it is to be healthier. I don't want to be a size 4 but maintain a similar BF%, I want to be a size 4 (or 6) and look damn good. So now I eat a LOT more and the number on the scale moves at a slower pace. Once my schedule allows, I intend to join a gym and do some lifting.0 -

You've got your big tick but on the threads I've been following not many people (other member) are sharing that information.0 -
This is exactly why you should not be trying to lose "weight". You should be trying to lose fat.
A lot of people don't care where the weight loss comes from, and I can understand that, but if you want a lean "fit" looking body you should be trying everything in your power to hold onto as much muscle as possible while losing weight. For this reason you should only use scale weight as a tool, along with body fat measurements, tape measurements, pictures, etc.
Some people just want to be thinner, and if they don't care about muscle then I guess it really doesn't matter where it comes from.
So to answer your question, I do care where it comes from. Muscle is hard to get so I want to keep every bit of it I have earned...0 -
My preference would be to have it come off my thighs and abs even those are the places are the last to see any weight loss.0
-
I personally took great care to preserve muscle mass and try to lose primarily fat. Is that what you mean? Or are you talking about preferring to lose around my waist and not my boobs? Because that isn't really an option.0

Cool.
Love the fact you've done your own research. Well done on the healthy warfighter lose.0 -
Generally, I prefer it to come from my body, beyond that though,0

The first one.0 -
Where I am, I'm pretty certain that most of my loss is coming from fat. I have a heck of a lot of it.
This does not mean that I am disregarding the health or fitness aspects. It just means at this point, they are not my primary concerns, however over time my plan is for them to gain importance.0 -
I don't know how accurate it is, but I use a Withings scale, which supposedly measures fat mass and lean mass. I've been working with a trainer for over a year now and have developed some pretty nice muscle tone, problem is, I have a bit of fat covering it up that I'd like to lose. The Withings scale has actually helped me to adjust my goal as a percentage of body fat, and not necessarily a number in pounds. As a result, my goal weight is more of a range than a number. In fact, the number I had in mind would probably be too low for me to maintain some decent muscle mass. My new goal is probably 8-10 lbs more than the original one because of it.0

No, since I have no control over this anyway.0

When you lose weight, it's inevitable that a portion of the weight lost will be lean mass. Exercise is more effective for retaining lean mass than diet, the two in tandem reduce the likelihood of losing a significant portion of it. Only in cases of severe starvation or extremely restrictive nutrition will the body turn to needed skeletal muscle in order to fuel itself.0
