Paleo Lifestyle Change?

Hi everyone. I am seriously considering transitioning into a paleo lifestyle. I don't know that I can cut out grains completely, I love my brown rice & occasionally whole wheat pasta & cereal, but I can definitely cut back. Everything that I have been reading about it seems to be great. I have GERD & I've read a lot of reviews that adopting the paleo lifestyle not only cleared it up, but also cleared up a whole slew of other health issues that they had as well. Has anyone adopted the Paleo lifestyle here & can you please tell me what your experience has been by doing so? I'd appreciate your feedback.

    Try it and see if it helps anything. IMO, it is just another way to create a calorie deficit for people trying to lose weight. Cutting out grains is pretty extreme unless you have a medical condition, as humans have been eating grains for thousands of years and are well adapted to using them as healthy fuel.

    Are you thinking of doing it just because of the GERD issue, or do you ave any other reasons? GERD is acid reflux issues, right? I really do not see how paleo would help with acid reflux….

    Well I've been doing a lot of research & it seems that many people have all said the same thing about the GERD issue. I'm not sure how it would help, I haven't looked into that. But I find that whenever I eat grains, I'm always bloated so I feel like I could benefit by cutting back but not eliminating them entirely, I am too scared to do that. Today for instance, I ate way less grains that I normally do & I had so much energy it was ridiculous. And during my research, this was another benefit of the paleo lifestyle. So I thought about transitioning into a 90/10 paleo lifestyle & just wanted some feedback from others from this site in addition to what I found through google.

    all I will say about paleo is that it is not some magical diet that is going to burn through fat and cure all your health ills :) I also think that in reality it really does not resemble the diet of true "paleolithic man" and the science behind Paleo is kind of sketchy, again just all my opinions..

    As someone who dealt with a plethora of GERD/LPR issues over years, I can tell you that this isn't a bad start and will certainly help with inflammation issues, but the thing that REALLY helped me was focusing on restoring proper gut function through HCl supplementation, digestive enzymes and high quality probiotics.

    sadly the odds are you're going to get a bunch of angry responses yelling at you for even considering paleo instead of answering your questions - as you're already beginning to see.

    Get yourself the book "it starts with food" by Melissa & Dallas Hartwig.
    Do whole30 (eating squeaky clean paleo for 30 days), and then reassess.

    Tomorrow is my last day of my 3rd round of whole30. And once again has been fantastic for me and has re affirmed that paleo eating works for me and my family.

    nutritionist maybe, but MD's have truly no concept of how to treat GERD/LPR - I've seen dozens of ENTs including the best in the business and they're all clueless. They just throw you on a permanent regimen of PPIs that don't help, and in fact exacerbate the problem.

    Have you read the book Wheat Belly? It is supposed to be very good. Also, does your condition allow you to eat any other grains besides wheat or do you need to cut them all out? I have given up wheat but still have limited oats (steel-cut), rye, spelt, quinoa, buckinis and such. I find now that if I have even one piece of wheat bread I feel very lethargic and "heavy", which I used to think was normal.

    I don't know much about the whole Paleo thing, but I have read that the wheat we eat today is a hybrid dwarf variety that was engineered about 50 years ago and is nothing like the wheat humans have eaten for the last 1000s of years which could explain the rise of gluten intolerances and such.
