I just wanted to say I got my foam roller from Amazon yesterday. I used it today after my workout, and I loved it. My glutes were really sore from yesterday's workout, and it helped. Also, I happened to look at them at Target yesterday. The same basic one was $39.99, but I paid $19.95 through Amazon, so shop around if you're looking for one.

I only just discovered it about a month ago and love it. It's really painful (especially after my run this morning) but the relief is almost instant afterwards.

Yes yes yes yes yes! Hurts but feels so good afterward. I make lots of funny noises using it, to the extent that my nephews now think it's the greatest toy ever as they like to copy my funny noises. And hide it in weird places...
    Maybe I need another one...

My (very experienced runner) husband's physio (specifically sports, not general NHS) told him to stop using them. She said most people don't know what they are doing and end up doing more harm than good.

Just to add an alternative opinion of them.

They also make a great whiffle ball bat for 5 year olds

    Or columns for a den.
  • Absolutely yes! I get a ridiculous amount of knee pain if any muscle below my waist (pretty much) is tight, so if I even feel a twinge coming on in either knee then I get the roller out. I'm also planning to use it a lot more now that I'm completely uninjured and trying to be on peak form for my sports.

I've been thinking about getting one for ages....you guys have convinced me to upgrade from my bit of copper pipe and tumble dryer ball - will be trying out the wine bottle idea till it gets delivered though =D

Definitely invest in one, if you're going for the traditional rollers and not the Grid or Rumble rollers look for ones which are either blue or black as they are much firmer foam than the white.

I have a love/hate relationship with mine...I love it because it feels good especially after but I hate it because it can be particularly painful all depending on the number of knots you have along with which part you're working - IT bands for example are more painful to do than quads/hammies.

Some people use it pre and post-workout, sort of like people will do dynamic stretches before and static after...Warms up the muscle before and helps stretch and get rid of knots, adhesions and everything else after

I would definitely recommend having someone show you how to use it, if you go with a foam roller. My chiropractor did for me, and I still had trouble on my own, and ultimately gave up. The Stick is awesome!! I like being able to adjust the amount of pressure and it's a whole lot easier to use!

Thanks to all who are recommending a pre-workout session....I have never tried that, but have a lot of difficulty in morning races. My legs cramp like crazy for the first few miles (it's not dietary or lack of fluids, completely muscular as far as I and my chiro can tell). I'm going to have to look at rolling out my muscles before hand to get them warmed up!! All I've been doing so far is walking and if I get a couple of slow miles in before, I feel great, but I often don't have the time before an early morning race.

For people who think the foam rollers are expensive you can substitute for a ball on the wall either tennis or softball. Also for people who do not want to get on the floor. A thercane is a great piece as well. When someone Iliotibial Band (IT) is annoyed it really puts pressure on that lateral thigh and pulls down behind the knee. Another thing you can do to save money is buy 2 liter bottle fill with water and freeze it. You have an instant bottle roller + cold.

a yay from me too. Will hurt like hell but my physio once says if it doesn't hurt you are not doing it right. Helped me loads when I injured my IBT last year

I picked up one (orange w/ nubbies) at target ... started to figure out the thing, amazing how much this gets vs stretching

Thumbs up. BIG thumbs up. I use a roller bar (thin with handles on either side that you use to move it back and forth across sore muscles) after every run. I use my foam roller if I'm really sore.

Basically, it gets your fluids moving, relaxes tense muscles and aids recovery. Can't explain all of it, but it works!

Tried for the first time the other day. I was disappointed as I had no pain or discomfort and didn't feel like I was doing anything. Anyway I decided to give it another go yesterday and I must have figured out what I was doing wrong as I nearly cried!
