    As a radio announcer I get grilled if I cannot pronounce things correctly. I'm just thankful I don't live in Hawaii. :p

    I also grew up reading more than talking so saw a lot of words that I knew the meaning of but didn't know how to pronounce.

    Imagine finding out I'd been trying to impress the cute guy upstairs by discussing my favorite 'jenners' instead of genres. LOL Gawd, I still cringe thinking about it. ;)

    I pronounce "collar" and "color" exactly the same. I can't hear the difference, so there's no difference in them when I say them. Also, I pronounce the silent "l" in "walk" and "talk."

    I didn't realize the L in walk or talk was supposed to be silent... walk with a silent L would sound like wok wouldn't it?

    I have trouble with Worcester... It's a county here in Maryland and as far as I can tell, the people who live in that county pronounce it Wooshter County.

    I have a hell of a time with "patronize". Is it a "long" or a "short" a? I've heard it said both ways. Yet despite how I say it, I'm usually told that it's the other way.

    I think it depends on how you're using it.

    "Acrylic." I have also been told that "Don" and "Dawn" aren't pronounced the same, but I pronounce them the same – I think that's a CA vs. LA accent thing, though.

    Nothing personal, but my name is Dawn, and I intensely dislike when people call me by a man's name. It never occured to me that the person speaking it may not be able to pronounce it correctly. I usually have to get all Boston on them. I will keep this bit of info in mind for the future, though, so thanks for sharing :flowerforyou:


    So how do you say your name? I don't know any other way to say "Dawn."

    It's Dawn, like fawn, yawn, or lawn. I never had anyone call me "Don" (with the "ON" sound) until I entered the workforce. I've literally had to say "no, I am not a man. It is DAAWWWWWN. Like Awning" ... sheesh.
    Those pronunciations must vary depending on region. I say all of those things with the "on" sound, so Don & Dawn sound identical to me. It would also then be: fon, yon, lon & onning. lol I keep trying to discern what's supposed to be different there, but I can't see (hear) it. :ohwell:

    Can't "hear" the difference, these are all the same to me too. Wow, I never realized!!

    Apparently I say the "tr" in tree weirdly and mascara like a British person.

    I can't say caterpillar. It always comes out as calapitter.

    And I say the "L" in walk.

    I also slur rural. It just doesn't come out right!

    And for the longest time, I couldn't say burglar.

    My 8-year-old calls pretzels "pren-tzels. No clue why, but she always forgets there's no "n" in that word :)

    OMG my sister used to do that and it drove me crazy!

    The one word I for sure say incorrectly is often.

    I leave the t out, so I say it like offen.

    Frustrated I say 'fusstrated'
    Pillow I say 'pellow'
    Refrigerator I say 'fridge-rator'
    Conspiracy I say 'cons-piracy' like copyright infringement.
    Button I say "but-ton" pronouncing both t's
    Milk I say "melk"

    ...and a lot more I can't think of off the top of my head. I can't speak my native language very well!

    I can say Chicken, and I can say Snitzel, BUT when I try say Chicken Snitzel it comes out shnicken shnishnel
    It's so annoying , I always sound REALLY drunk lol

    Originally from Oklahoma... spent some time in Arkansas before coming to California. For decades my sister pronounced crayon as "crown" = endless joy for me! (yes, I know I have issues.) :) MANY relatives from the Midwest say things like "warsh" for wash, "rut" for root, "hup" for hoop, and phrases like "git-r-dun" are a whole separate category combining portmanteaus, colloquialisms and hillbilly speak.

    Trying to explain to my daughter about how certain words should be pronounced - like the place that has the books "Lie Barry"; "Ambalance", and "member" instead of remember. Still says "fow - in" for fountain and "mau - in" for mountain.
