This is something that always made me curious...
How do you get from keeping oatmeal from exploding in the microwave?

I use a larger wide-rimmed bowl. gives the oatmeal room to expand without spilling over. also, i'll stop/stir once i see it getting to the point where its about to spill over.0

By cooking it on the stove0

I thought this thread would be about a new indie band, Exploding Oatmeal.0

I started cooking porrige/oatmeal in a microwave at uni (no hob/stove or to minimise mess and washing up)
Porrige will explode when:
- bowl radius is too small
- bowl is over filled
- porrige is left in the microwave for too long
I still cook it in a microwave now if I'm doing for myself, but on the stove if i'm doing for others as well
I find that powdered milk doesn't explode as easily in the microwave as normal milk does.
I use a very wide and shallow bowl (crockery) at home, that is less than 1/2 full by depth.
I use a plastic bowl at teh office, which is a lot less broad but deeper (and is a lot more likely to explode)
in both cases I put in the microwave for at most 1 minute, before opening and stiring
the gluppier it gets the time between stirring shortens towards 30s
this morning i did 1m+1m+30s+30s and no explosions0 -

fantastic! Thank you for sharing!0 -
Bigger bowl. Keep an eye on it and stop the microwave when you see it getting too close to the edge.
Or you could cook a big batch on the stove or in the crock pot and reheat servings daily.0 -
Like others, short, wide bowl and don't add any sweetener until after cooking it.0

I follow the directions on the package. That always helps.0

Me too. Exploding Oatmeal would be an awesome band name.0 -
Useful tips thanks all, I have this problem sometimes too! I've been taking the bowl out of the microwave half way through cooking to give it a stir. Very messy when it happens and means less oatmeal for me!!0

I stopped leaving the spoon in the bowl.0

Repeat until it's cooked.0 -
....came in thinking this would be Desi's thread.....walked out disappointed.....\m/0

Cook it on medium instead of high0

Cover the bowl with a mircowave cover (cheap easy to find) . I'll also put a paper towel over foods that go that under the microwave cover so I don't have to wash the cover either, as I am lazy.0

I only put hot water and oats (with some trail mix) and water into a big old soup cup and let the oats soak for about 15-20 minutes. The outcome is a little gritty but I don't really care about having a porrige like consistency. There's really no wrong oatmeal.
btw, I only fill the cup halfway with quaker oats.0 -
As another poster recommended, break the total cooking time as per instructions (to the smart-alec poster!!) into chunks.
Two 45s runs gets me to the 1.5 min cooking time without a mess, every time. Your microwave times will vary based on your microwave's power and how much you're cooking relative to me!
Good luck!0 -
I don't interfere with Darwinism.0

It doesn't really explode as much as boils over. Which is good because when you look through the window during the short time it takes to microwave it you can see when it's starting to happen and simply open the door until it settles back down. This is how I do it. I love oatmeal and consider it worth the extra attention. Really I pay a lot of attention to most of my cooking so it's not a big deal that I can't just walk away and wait for the thing to beep.0

I saw a post on facebook about setting a chopstick across a pot or pan to stop it from boiling over on the stove...kinda wondered if that would help with oatmeal. I just try to tailor the time to the qty so it does not erupt, totally agree that when it DOES erupt it is a good reason to %^&$#@ hehe.0

I think the thing with mine is:
I have to cook it longer if I am using a microwave because I am always opening it to stir it to keep it from exploding. Also, my *window* on the microwave is not as see-through as I wish it was! It is actually frosted and has a dotted covering to it so it makes it nearly impossible to see lol.
I was just hoping that there was some magical thing LOL
But I guess I will keep doing what I am doing!

I have a huge bowl, every morning, with water.
Give a blast for a few minutes, stir, then put it back in for 30 - 40 secs at a time, stirring in between. Keep an eye on it and when you see it boiling up take it out and give it a stir. For me, this is a good indication that it's cooked just the way I like it :-)0 -
5 min at 50% power. Have not had it explode once.0

Just eat it dry. Mix dry oats with peanut butter and the effort to eat it makes it a delicious, negative calorie food. Google some jaw stretches beforehand though...just ignore the context of the websites that come up...the stretches are what matters.0

Or an action movie.0 -
Here I was thinking you were adding the candy pop rocks to your oatmeal, hmmm that might be good! haha0

Give up and make these instead:
Here's the recipe: http://memeinge.com/blog/peanut-butter-banana-cookies/
It's Microwave free so you don't have to worry about your oatmeal blowing up. Eat safe. Wear gloves.0 -
I make oatmeal almost every morning for my boyfriend and I, and it has never exploded.
1) Use a regular cereal bowl or tupperware bowl of similar size.
2) Measure 1/2 cup of quick oats in the bowl.
3) Fill with water ONLY ENOUGH to cover the oats.
4) Cover bowl with a small plate.
5) Microwave for 2:30.
PERFECT!
For my boyfriend's I stir in peanut butter, honey, and shredded coconut. For mine, I stir in vanilla whey powder, mixed berries, and shredded coconut. Either way - awesome!0
