You can offer him a nutritious balanced diet but you can't force him to eat. You can be an example, but you can't force him to eat. He must take the responsibility for his own health.

Tie him up and force-feed him?

On a serious note, share your concerns with him. Cook high-calorie meals for him. That's all I can think of.

I'm with poobah. The above is the first thing to address. Until he agrees with you the rest is not going to happen.

He's definitely on board with gaining weight. We just need some ideas to get higher calorie Healthier foods in him to gain the weight back. Believe it or not hes a produce manager at a grocery store. But he is so busy he wont eat breakfast or lunch then comes home and eats to pb n j sandwiches...and a pint of ice cream.

Cook him breakfast before he leaves, pack a lunch for him, and cook dinner in the evenings?

People here are wonderful, but because your husband is diabetic and has lost so much weight he really needs to get immediate help from a doctor or nutritionist. I don't know about "yuck". It seems more like a "yikes" situation to me.

  • Exercise is one thing that helps greatly in people who are pre-diabetic, is there a way to get him to do some kind of moderate exercise for 150 mins per week? Try something he may not think of as exercise, as simple as going on walks with him, biking, hiking, etc. Exercise can also help with increasing the appetite, and getting an evaluation with a physician is a great idea if there seems to be no good reason for the weight loss. I would start with the Dr. visit to make certain there is nothing else going on and check his "pre-diabetic" status...diabetes can cause weight loss too...

I apologize for my snarkiness. I misunderstood your question, thinking he didn't care about his weight but you did. I think you're asking how to seriously up his calorie intake while watching what he eats due to his pre-diabetic condition, and my answer would be to seek help from a doctor.

Buy half a gallon of heavy cream and start adding it to everything. Cream on oatmeal. Soup made with cream. Mashed potatoes with cream. Cakes and cookies with cream. Pancakes and french toast with cream.

There are very few things that can't be made awesome by adding cream to them. :D

Take if from me. It WORKS. lol.

BurntCoffee covered my thoughts. Prior to my PWD diagnoses I was not eating and dropped a lot of weight. You might encourage with all due gentleness a visit to the MD for an A1C.

    problem solved.

Protein shakes? Get him a shaker bottle and he can drink them at work. You can get the weight gainer ones too (but watch the sugar on those).

And yes, help from a doctor.

In case this is for real:
He could be an actual (not pre-) diabetic or any combination of things listed here. Please take him to a doctor.
Even if you think he is perfectly well, he should see a doctor periodically.

When I worked at a care home we had a lot of luck with milkshakes made with a high fat ice cream like haagendaas (Spelling?). We would add different things to them, like protein or ensure. They were always well received and I see that your husband likes ice cream but I agree that you have to watch the sugar. Check with the doctor, maybe they will have other suggestions, too. That's what we pay them for, right?!

OP, if there is one thing you need to do is convince him to go to the dr. Do not try to feed him high calorie foods or fix the problem in any other way, he needs to see his dr, check if he now has diabetes and getting an eating plan. There is more to health than weight.

Pre diabetic, and he is going without food then eating a pb&j. He is going to turn diabetic if he keeps spiking his glucose. Was he hypo before? Hypo is low blood sugar and when you turn pre, all of a sudden you start spiking high. He needs to see a doctor, and should already be is he was diagnosed pre diabetic. Does he monitor? Weight loss is not normally a symptom, not trying to scare you but he NEEDS to be seen!

Also not saying it is a woman's place but it is normal for a spouse to look after the other, ever considered cooking dinner? Breakfast? Packing him a lunch?

Background....husband was hypo at 20 and Pre diabetic at 30, he has always been active, muscular and on the slim side. According to most doctors, he is the opposite of someone at risk of these conditions. Turning pre was the worst because he ate when his sugar was bad, and instead of low he was high and would spike. Now years later he is pretty much clear of it, it seems his body balanced out. He never had weight loss, and was never warned to look for it.

I'd suggest that he seek a divorce. Going on the Internet and describing one's spouse with the word "yuck" isn't cool

Maybe see a doctor? Could be more to it than just eating habits.

Not sure if I can be super helpful, but how about lots of healthy fats...nuts, coconut oil...what about protein shakes or Boost-type supplements?

I hope it comes together and you can both be healthy and happy weight-and-otherwise.

My ex was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 28 years old. In a very short period he dropped from 160 pounds to around 140 for 6 feet tall. He was always hungry and thirsty. We went to the doctor and his blood sugar was at 27 when your supposed to be in the range of 4 to 7. Don't mess with diabetes and go see the doctor.
