Why bother?!

I'm in a healthy weight range now (but didn't used to be). I've lost around 28lbs, yet not one person has commented on the change. Why do I even bother? Why don't I just eat a loada ice cream and cake since I obviously looked the same when I was 28lbs heavier?!

I've kinda felt this way too. I'm 23lbs lighter than my prepregnancy weight yet no one has seemed to notice. Then I realized that I'm changing my lifestyle for ME. Yes, it would be nice to hear others praise my weight loss but is that what I'm working so hard for??...no. Besides, weight loss is more noticed when people haven't seen you in a while. It's less noticeable for people who see you everyday.0

Are you doing this for other people, or yourself?
Next time you're at the gym, pick up something that weights 30lbs...Tell me it's not easier on your body having to lug all that around.0 -
good point. have a scoop for me.0

Because you know the difference, your body knows the difference, and you'll be better off in the long run for taking the time to take care of you. Besides, the heck with everyone else! Great job!0

I am sure you look great with a 28lb loss that put you in the normal range. I am about 40 - 45 lbs outta range and I know 28lbs would make a huge difference, so chin up! Also, You have gained so much in health! That is the best part! I know your body is thanking you! :happy:0

Personally, that's a sufficient reason.0 -
I can definitely feel the difference within myself, it's just kinda upsetting that no one else notices. I should definitely be doing it for myself rather than other people though . I've DEFINITELY got fitter- i ran 5k the other day where my previous record was like 10 minutes :P. That feels pretty good.0

Keep in mind there's a difference between noticing and commenting. People may have noticed but just not said anything.0

Because YOU ARE worth the bother.
Being at a healthy weight for your height and surely the ability to exercise and achieve a PB at the 5K is better than any comment from someone else.
Looking for validation outside of your own personal motivation will always lead to disappointment and will probably not sustain you thru the hard times when motivation flies out the window ..... perhaps working on your own inner reserves of Pride, Perseverance and dogged commitment thru these lean times will help you realise that your opinion of yourself is the ONLY real one that counts.
Congrats on your achievements both in weight loss and fitness.
Good Luck0 -
I'm down a little over 80 pounds and it wasn't until I was down the first 40 or so that people began to occasionally comment. Even now, they are very few and far between. Mostly, people don't want to embarrass someone who may be sick or have other issues that cause weight loss. Just because they don't say anything doesn't mean they don't notice. Make a light hearted, self deprecating crack about your weight loss and see if they don't open up. Some just need a bit of an invitation.0
-
Why bother because this is about you and not about what people think about you0
-
People haven't noticed....? Hrm... some people can be so self-absored... shame on them
See what I did there? It's 28 lbs. Here's a congratulations from a total stranger... the parade will begin shortly.0 -
Why? Cause your doing it/ did it for you right?? I sure would hope so. Wgaf what others think?! That imo though.0
-
I don't get this at all... do you want them to comment when you pile on 28lbs why should they comment when you lose it....
Do you think normal weight people that have never lost of gained but have always been a great weight need comments to tell them they are the same as ever...noooo....
I really think that some people intentionally lose and gain weight to get attention...just my thoughts
are you doing this for you?? if so don't stress.0 -

You've totally nailed it. It's all about how you look, not how you feel or how healthy you are. If no one notices that you've lost weight, you might as well pack it in and pack those pounds back on with a few weeks worth of pity parties. Maybe then people will notice and say "Hey, remember when you lost that weight then put it back on?" Then you'll feel better.
Right?0 -

Outstanding answer !! And congrats for your achievments OP :drinker:0 -
so if you gained 28 pounds, would you want people to comment and take notice of that as well?
This. I bet you anything people have noticed and just not commented. I know sometimes I notice others' weight loss (or gain!) and am not sure what to say, so I don't comment. Good reminder that a compliment overcomes whatever weirdness there might be!0 -
Some people prefer not to comment. It seems to be a cultural difference. If you know some Asians, saunter up to them, we're usually quite verbose about these things
Honestly though, just relax. You've done a great job. You're healthier and you're less at risk for illnesses in the future. You also probably fit into some smaller clothes etc. if you're into that kind of thing. If you're worried about how you look, focus on why that is. Enjoy your achievement and don't do it for other people 'cause that's the kind of weight that could pile back on.0 -
The first thing I did when I lost 35 pounds was to go to Petsmart and pick up a bag of dog food that weighed about 35 pounds. I could hardly pick it up. I walked down an aisle with it and paid attention to how much weight my knees and feet felt. I felt grateful that I could put it down at the end of the aisle and walk lightly out of the store.
I lost weight because I want good health, a sense of well-being, energy to do the things I want to do, and time, years of time, to spend with the people I love.
Many people think that is is impolite to comment on the appearance of others, either positively or negatively.0 -
I just tend to randomly blurt out my loss to folk whether they want to know or not. I'm proud of what I've achieved - However saying that do I actually expect them to care? Hell no!0

Last year I was well along my weight loss journey having lost 30lbs. I felt incredible, my clothes fit better, I was sleeping better, my skin looked better, etc etc. No one noticed I had lost weight. No biggy cuz I'm doing this for me. I gained back 15lbs due to job related stress (so still down 15 from SW) and NOW people want to comment about my weight GAIN! Oh well, gotta just keep plugging along...0

If you really lost 28 pounds, you don't look the same. And I sure hope you didn't do it for pats on the back, attention or recognition. This is about you and no one else. It's about a healthy you, a person that no longer is at risk for the horrible disease known as type 2 diabetes, where body parts start coming off and kidneys start to fail along with other vital organs.
And that should be the reason for you to keep it off.0 -
If the only reason you did it was to revel in the compliments, then I agree - Bust out the sweat pants and Twinkies, baby!
But you know you did it for more than that and that you've done so much more for yourself than just look better in the eyes of others.
And others in this thread are right, many may have noticed but not said anything for various reasons. I treat weight loss like pregnancy. Unless you tell me you are/have, I don't mention it just in case you think I'm inferring you needed to lose weight, you've lost it because you're sick, or whatever. Better to keep my mouth closed and by thought a fool (or in this case unobservant meanie) than to open my mouth and remove all doubt0 -
...you're right...you shouldn't bother anymore if your only goal to dropping weight was to have people compliment you--they didn't, so apparently what you are doing has failed.
but...on the other hand......0 -
5K in 10 minutes? Am I missing anything? this is ridiculously fast...0
