The "Trinity" series. They are Italian westerns.0
-
Moonrise Kingdom (although the two kids fondling each other made me queasy)
Thanks For Sharing- Mark Ruffalo and Gwyneth Paltrow were excellent in this movie.0 -
Grave of the Fireflies - an anime piece along the lines of Schindler's List, but much, much deeper and darker. A must see (but you'll only want t see it once).
Definitely one of the most heart-wrenching and depressing films of all time... seriously
My selections for watching are May (it's a weird horror movie)
City of God - Just watch it.
La Vie est Belle - french film, obviously, that both breaks your heart and makes it smile at the same time.
Amelie - it's not really obscure but one of my favorite films of all time.
Death Proof - It's my favorite of Tarantino's work that's part girl power, part classic death race scenes. With some pretty quotable moments in it.
and I second the previous mention of The Fall. I loved that movie.
I've got May on my queue already LOVED City of God! Can't find "La Vie est Belle" anywhere Amelie is in my top five easily!0 -
May not necessarily be described as obscure (that's a subjective term anyway), but here are some that spring to mind:
Angel-A
Pan's Labyrinth
Subway
Amelie
The Straight Story
Mulholland Drive
Dark City
Requiem for a Dream
Monsters
[REC]
Irreversible
Man Bites Dog
I'd give those all some massive props! there were a few I haven't seen though and I added them too! I can't wait to watch REC, I've heard great things!0 -
My Life as a Dog
Das Boot
Amelie0 -
Miller's Crossing by the Cohen brothers
The Dead, a version of the James Joyce short story
If Lucy Fell
The Field, another Irish movie about the John B. Keane play (who I met at his bar before his passing)0 -
To Live and Die in LA.
Added, looks pretty awesome!0 -
Dudes by Penelope Spheeris...
Decline is a documentary about the late 70s LA punk scene.
Suburbia is a feature film about punk runaways and the scene/life they live in.
I've seen Suburbia, and now will see Decline of Western Civilization!0 -
Just off the top of my head Strange Brew and UHF come to mind.
Ohhhh! UHF! How I've missed you!0 -
I haven't read through all these so hopefully I'm not repeating suggestions. I'm more mainstream. Some of my favorite movies are Fight Club, Amelie, The Princess Bride, The Prestige, and The Fifth Element. My husband is a movie buff and has exposed me to some great movies I wouldn't normally watch. Incendies and Tell No One are two foreign films I wouldn't have watched without him suggesting them to me. They were both incredible. He likes one called Enter the Void but I haven't watched it - I can't take too much drug use and the movie basically starts off right away with drugs. It's also pretty abstract and I don't enjoy that kind of thing. He knows me well enough to avoid having me watch things I wouldn't enjoy. That wasn't true early in our relationship when he made me watch Requiem for a Dream. I acknowledge that it's a well made movie but the subject matter is just much too dark and depressing for me. And that last scene...ugh.0

I lean a little to the nerdy side so cheesy B sci fi movies are my guilty pleasure. All time favourites:
Them!
Creature from the Black Lagoon
Lost Planet Airmen (sans Commander Cody..ok so I'm a little older)
It Came From Outer Space
The Beast With a Million Eyes
Day of the Triffids (original)
The Creature Walks Among Us
The Mysterians
Attack of the Puppet People
and so many more...
oh and pretty well anything by Toho Studios
You're not alone! I've seen so many of those it's ridiculous lol! I've never seen The Mysterians though so I need to get on it!0 -
If your looking for something serious, a great obsscure film would be the Italian film Cinema Paradiso, originally titled "Nuovo Cinema Paradiso." It's benissimo!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095765/
I couldn't agree more! If you've never seen the original version then you need to! They did one with an alternate ending that just ruins the film!0 -
So many good ones mentioned already! How about...
Classic: "The Shop Around the Corner"
So-Bad-It's-Good: "The Apple"
Rom-Com: "Cousins"
Not really obscure, but...
Musical (sort of): "Once"
Hitchcock: "Notorious"
Just plain awesome: Linklater's "Before" trilogy
(Edited to add the "Before" trilogy... how could I forget those???)
THose are some great choices! I LOVE Once! Can't find Cousins though :-/ and I'm glad someone mentioned the Before trilogy(loved them!)0 -
Guilty pleasure: It! The Terror From Beyond Space (1958) - NOTE: many plot elements borrowed by the original 'Alien'
Cult classic: Faster Pu$$ycat Kill! Kill! (1965) - You have to love the title and it's Russ Meyers... need I say more?
Foreign film: High and Low (1963) - A slightly more obscure Kurosawa film... one that's *not* about samurai
Documentary: Dust to Glory (2005) - Interesting subject matter (to me - YMMV)
Thanks for starting this thread - I'm adding to my list too!
Edit: who knew Pu$$ycat was a bad word?
I love this list! I've seen them all except Dust to Glory so it's getting added! and You're welcome, I'm finding a ton of great flicks!0 -
Goodbye, Lenin - it's in German, but so good.
No but needed! It's amazing! Like I said earlier, people need to get over the fear of subtitles lol0 -
They Live (1988) one of my all time favorites.0

Also...Once Were Warriors
I second Once Were Warriors. Also Romper Stomper. Both very confronting films, but very, very good.
Not sure about Welcome to Woop Woop, though. I hated every second of it!
 It's quite possible that I liked Welcome to Woop Woop so much because it totally caught me off guard. I had no idea what it was about & it took most of the film to figure it out.
I am easily entertained
To be fair, I didn't know what I was in for with Once Were Warriors as well...I like to be surprised :drinker:
Off to add some of the above suggestions to Netflix...
OP: excellent thread!!!!
I've added Once Were Warriors to my queue but it looks like Woop Woop will have to be a download, I can't find it :-/
and thanks, I'm glad everyone is liking it.0 -
TLDR
Did anybody say Memento yet? Amazing film but you you do need to watch several times to fully understand it.0 -
The Station Agent
The Way
Faith, Fraud, and Minimum Wage
Tyrannosaur
Can't find Faith, Fraud, and Minimum Wage anywhere but I've added the rest to my Netflix! Looks like some interesting films!0 -
My favs- that no one I am around has seen or gets my references. ( I love throwing in movie quotes when the occasion calls for it)
