I have also slowly been making my way through most of the big films lists over the years (1001, AFI, TIME, etc). I have really been into Asian cinema the past couple of years and watched 250+ movies (mostly Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Thai), here's a link to a list of my favorites: http://mydramalist.com/list/D45wqoLX

Why do they always run away from me? It's the galoshes. They're a dead giveaway. Why do I wear them? It isn't even raining!

I thought I was the only person who has seen this one! hahaha! "*click*.. did you just hang up? No, I just said click" hahaha

OH MY GOD YOU'RE MY NEW FAVORITE PERSON!!

Why does it sound like you're talking through a rubber chicken?

I don't know whether these are considered obscure or not:

English and German language versions of Anna Christie, Greta Garbo's first speaking role.

    Choose Me.

    Next Stop, Greenwich Village!

Tabu: A Story of the South Seas

The Fly (Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis version)

    Dean Spanley

    Man with a Movie Camera

    À Propos de Nice

    Taris

    Time Out for Trouble

    La Chienne

    Les Mistons

    Antoine et Colette

Wow, You've got some amazing suggestions there! I've seen a hand full of them. What would you say is your favorite on there?

    Run Lola Run

    Persona

    Apocalypse Now

    Do The Right Thing

The Wicker Man (the original from the 1970's)

The Prisoner (ok, so this is a TV show from the 1960s, but it is good and it's under 20 episodes, but well worth the time! Pure awesomeness!)

    The City of Lost Children

Rear Window (hell, any Hitchcock movie featuring James Stewart, but this and Vertigo are my faves)

    Citizen Kane

    The Stranger

There are so many more I could think of if I tried. I am a film lover, myself. I'll have to check out your list of movies. I'm going to assume that some of the movies on this are also on my list. If not, I might have to question how good that list really is ;)

Generation War: Our Mothers, Our Fathers (Germany) ...not quite sure what to classify it as..like a 3 part series, in German with subtitles. Not sure if it was shown in the US? Very powerful stuff.

I can't find it on Netflix but I'll be sure to download it! I love German films!

    Criterion? Okay

    Hard Day's Night
    Red Shoes
    Stagecoach
    Anatomy of a murder
    Blow out
    On the Waterfront
Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
    Persona
    Rules of the Game
    Seven Samurai
    Seconds
Shoah (must devote a whole day to this one)
    Red River

Might I also suggest The General with Charlie Chaplin (or any of his work really), anything with Buster Keaton or Harold Lloyd.

My bf is a movie critic and so our movie collection is quite extensive.

    Guilty Pleasure list:

The Wizard (1989) Christian Slater, Fred Savage, and Jenny Lewis before she switched to singing.

The Cutting Edge (1992) D.B. Sweeney is adorable

Labrynth (1986) David Bowie in tight pants

Mallrats (1995) Jay and Silent Bob - enough said.

Grave of the Fireflies - an anime piece along the lines of Schindler's List, but much, much deeper and darker. A must see (but you'll only want t see it once).

I saw it and loved it! Totally not a kids film but it was on the 1,001 and couldn't be happier that I saw it!

The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) - A beautiful film about the mythical "selkies" on the remote Irish island of Roan Inish. Just beautiful.

Definitely one of the most heart-wrenching and depressing films of all time... seriously

My selections for watching are May (it's a weird horror movie)

City of God - Just watch it.

La Vie est Belle - french film, obviously, that both breaks your heart and makes it smile at the same time.

Amelie - it's not really obscure but one of my favorite films of all time.

Death Proof - It's my favorite of Tarantino's work that's part girl power, part classic death race scenes. With some pretty quotable moments in it.

and I second the previous mention of The Fall. I loved that movie.

May not necessarily be described as obscure (that's a subjective term anyway), but here are some that spring to mind:

    Angel-A
    Pan's Labyrinth
    Subway
    Amelie
    The Straight Story
    Mulholland Drive
    Dark City
    Requiem for a Dream
    Monsters
    [REC]
    Irreversible
    Man Bites Dog

    Dudes by Penelope Spheeris...
Two more Penelope Spheeris recommendations: Suburbia from 1984 and Decline of Western Civilization from 1981

Decline is a documentary about the late 70s LA punk scene.

Suburbia is a feature film about punk runaways and the scene/life they live in.
