You can't possibly eat 1200 cals? How did you gain the weight you need to lose if eating is so difficult? Sorry if this was already explained...0

This post is under "General Diet and Weight Loss Help" .... sorry for not realizing I wasn't supposed to talk about weight loss in response. WOW.
Not talking about weight loss was YOUR idea, not ours.
Then why all the HATE?
LOVE YOU GUYS.0 -
OP (if you're still here) - I hope you are still speaking to a therapist for your ED as your trying to lose weight a healthy way. It's way too easy to slip back into unhealthy and obsessive/restrictive eating habits. Even logging on here can "feed the demon".
Please be careful and be safe. The best advice I can offer you is to have an actual physical performed by your doctor and have him/her work with you and discuss realistic health goals.0 -
People who wish to be mean wait for threads like this because they can get away with nastiness and in this community, it is accepted.
If your doctor is okay with what you eat and you feel strong and healthy, do it and don't spend any time worrying about what others might think.
I averaged out my last 21 days and came up with an average of 1227. I couldn't care less if people have strokes over how wrong they feel it is. They can spin around like the Tasmanian devil, spew names like a kindergartener and have flames shoot out of their ears, lol. I wouldn't spend half a second worrying about whether or not they approved.
You have to think about what kind of person is purposefully nasty to strangers online...where that comes from. Then you won't care, either.
Everyone has to walk their own path. Follow your doctor's instructions and be happy.
Edit to add:
If you have anorexia, listening to fat people talk about weight loss may be very triggering. You might just want to find a recovery site. Or you might not! Up to you.
Hang in there. 1200 is a ton if you have an ED. Work toward it. Feel no guilt. Some days are better than others. As long as you keep going in the right direction, overall, it's all okay. Good luck on your journey.0 -

I actually agree, I do not lose weight if I have 1200, normally I eat 300 then burn off 300 then eat another 200 and I am still a healthy weight.
Um, what????0 -

Ya'll are so nice and friendly here. LOVE YOU!!
People with eating disorders should not be asking about losing weight. Period. People should also not jump all over someone who with all good intention provides advice based on personal experience and the advice of doctors.
And no I typically don't read the first full page of people's comments because as we can all see everyone is so loving and kind here. Excuse me for not actively looking for someone who is underweight or with an ED on a forum full of fat people like myself.... how strange.
I'm pretty sure the OP is a troll post, but w/e.
But anyway,
1) your bariatric doctor gave you the advice you mentioned (about VLCDs) because you are (or were, IDK you, man) clinically obese. You can't turn around and hand that advice to a slightly overweight person.
2) not everyone with an eating disorder is anorexic, so your blanket statement that "no one with an eating disorder should ask about losing weight" is pretty rude.
3) It's already been said, but not everyone here is fat or evern trying to lose weight. I am currently on here with no other goals other than to gain or maintain my current lean body mass and have a place to tally everything I eat (and also to have super fun times on the forum and my newsfeed)

I don't know. I'm in recovery from an eating disorder, and I don't think 1200 is 'high'. It felt high to my body early in recovery, and sometimes the eating disorder tries to convince me it's too much. But I know (deep down, as do many people with eating disorders) that 1200 is not too high, and may be even too low for the average person. In fact, many people with eating disorders (myself included) do their best to encourage people not to eat how they eat because they know it is bad and they know they should eat more.
This post is just... my head cannot wrap around it.
ETA: Wow.
Just saying, because that post (too lazy to quote it) bothers the heck out of me. 'Fat' people can have eating disorders, too. Bulimics can be a number of weights (from underweight, to within a healthy BMI range, to overweight, to obese) and should never ask for dieting tips. Binge eaters can be any weight. Even people with anorexia may be (as the early stages of anorexia... well, the anorexic wasn't always underweight. Plus there is atypical anorexia [all the symptoms except the BMI]). When my eating disorder reared its ugly head, I was obese. And if someone has an eating disorder and is 'fat', they should not be asking for dieting tips, either. Even if it is binge eating disorder.. as a simple diet will not cure the food binges.0 -
I'm assuming this is a troll, but just in case you really don't understand how any of this works here's a quick break down (you really should read some of the link people have post in this thread though.)
Your body uses calories just by being alive. It burned calories to maintain heart functions, your digestive system, to keep your body temperature regulated, to breathe. Basically every function your body performs uses energy and that energy comes from burning calories.
1200 calories is the average minimum caloric intake a women can eat to sustain those bodily functions if completely sedentary (think bed ridden.) Anything additional you do during the day increases your calorie needs.
Everybody has a maintenance calorie intake. This is the amount of calories you would need to eat in a day to stay at your current weight. This number is slightly different for everyone, and a lot of different factors play into deciding the exact number, but there are calculators online that can help you get a general idea. This is why some people will lose weight at 1800 calories a day while others might gain weight.
To lose weight you need to eat under your maintenance caloric intake but more than your minimum caloric needs.
Hope this helps at least point you in the right direction for where to start researching.0 -

Firstly, the OP asked if it was ok to eat less than 1200 calories. I replied and shared the advice given to me by doctors and I clearly explained my perspective was as a person who DID need to lose weight. If this is not helpful to her then she should ignore what I said. The OP did not in her first message say if she was gaining/losing or if she was suffering from an ED in that post. I am NOT the only person who missed her message later on saying she had an ED. Her ambiguous first message lead to a mixed bag of responses of which I am just one.
Secondly, This was my 2nd or 3rd post EVER on this forum I had no IDEA people with ED's or trying to gain weight etc would post a topic in the section for "general diet and weight loss" or that it is an offense against humanity to reply with personal opinion. As was clear from my posts I was sharing my experience and being helpful (or so I thought). There is no reason to be so hateful to someone who made a honest mistake!
Thirdly, everyone is upset that I ASSUMED this was a weight loss post. In all their zealousness they are ASSUMING everyone on planet earth has experience with ED's or knows to be looking for them on this forum.
Lastly, No one deserves to be treated in the way people treat others here. It is abusive and unnecessary. There have been many helpful posts in this chain though and hopefully the OP has received the answers she needed to her questions....0 -

Oh boy. if you go back and read through a lot of the initial posts, you'll see a lot of us trying to give helpful advice to the OP, and then a really rude post from you, to me, questioning why I assumed OP had an eating disorder and why I would be on MFP if I'm not trying to lose weight. So who's being abusive and treating others rudely and in an unnecessary fashion, my dear?0 -
AGAIN I had NO CLUE there was any other kind of discussion going on this "General Diet and Weight Loss" section of the site. My words weren't meant as an offense to someone on MFP for other reasons than weight loss...rather total confusion as to what we were talking about and what other kind of activity happens here. I literally was asking as an honest question "why are you here if not for weight loss" and it was an honest and genuine question because I didn't know. My comments were in no way meant to offend you personally and I'm sorry if it sounded that way. I just honestly was super confused trying to figure out what had everyone so angry at eachother.0

When you find people who you think are making repeatedly rude posts...and there are a few who quite literally never post anything but rude comments, lol... just click the ignore thing. You never see another one of their posts again.
Nonsense ends.
Spend a few days clicking off rude people and the forums become a happier place.0 -

Started 2 weeks ago. I am 38 and weigh 143lb. I Go to the gym 3 times a week for 60 mins cardio and then some weights. Goal was 1200 calories a day. But despite me weighing or scanning everything I ate I put weight on in the 1st week. Cut calories down to between 800 and 900 and I am still not loosing anything at all. No idea why. Can't be eating more than I think as I am being ultra careful about weighing and not eating out.0

Ah, why does MFP always use phrases like "being mean", "not fair"...? What are we? 10 year olds which have to watch so they do not hurt some bu hu feelings? If OP has ED than she should ask medical advice from doctor and not from some strangers online. I would rather think she is troll because normal functioning person who is not anorexic ( and by OP pictures I can not see any sign of it) 1200 kcal can not be too much like she phrase it unless she is like 4 feet tall and has 100 pounds.0

at the start of any new workout program, a person will retain water to cushion and repair muscles that are not used to doing that kind of work. Your "gain" is 100% explainable by that. For christ's sake, eat the food. 800-900 is ridiculously unnecessary and dangerous.0 -
