Question about cell phones while working out

I have a question: do you talk on the phone while working out? If so, how would you react if someone asked you nicely to quiet down? And I don't mean just a quick call, I'm talking long conversations, every day.

Have you ever asked someone nicely to quiet down and been snapped at?

I've asked people to quiet down before, and half of the time I get a rude response. Today I asked someone to quiet down, and he was very nice about it, even came over after his workout to apologize again saying he didn't realize he was being loud.

I know some people say "That's my only me time, or that's my social time (when they go with friends and yap away), but that's the same for me too. This is my time. I font want to listen to your chatter about your problems or your sex life or what your kids are doing. If i cam hear you over Iron Maiden on my ipod, then yes, I'll say something. This is MY me time and I wish people would be more considerate.

Wow.... I don't think I have ever seen someone on the phone while working out at my gym. I would actually mention something to the gym, as I would say like driving, not ultimately safe.

I don't really work out, per se, at the gym. I take the group classes though - Total Body Workout, Zumba, that kind of thing. I have noticed, more and more, that people bring their phones into class and set them with their water bottles. I think it amuses me, more than it annoys me....like, come on! You can't go for an hour without your phone?? My gym has a pretty "user friendly" locker room so that isn't an excuse. Or just leave it in your car (in the console or glove compartment).
  • Yeah, I agree. I think cel phone use at the gym should be toned down quite a bit. Step off the damn treadmill, go over by the mirror and take your call. If I thought it was okay to be all loud and inconsiderate, I'd bring my own boombox. :)

I have issues with people using their cellphones @ the gym, in class, in line at the grocery store, walking around aimlessly getting in MY way @ the grocery store and happily chatting away....

I think there are a lot of people who need cell phone ettiquette lessons. I would definitely complain to the gym and explain your concerns and the possible safety issues.

I notice this too! I dont take my phone anywhere near the gym. If soemone needs me they know where I am at and if not I will call them when I am done.

Silly me, but I focus on my workout rather than yap on the phone.

Anyway, is there a "no cell phone" sign in your gym? We have one in ours, but it doesn't seem to stop people. I usually just tell them it's a "no cell phone" gym and point to one of the many signs. No one has been nasty to me yet, but I have gotten a couple of dirty looks, which really blows me away since they are the ones ignoring the "no cell phone" policy.

lol I usually can't breathe enough to carry on a conversation on the phone while working out!
I do text and stuff sometimes, but that is quiet and doesn't bother anyone ;)

But I know what you mean. I have people at my gym that do that too. (Iron Maiden---awesome! btw) I usually just ignore them and am able to tune out people if I don't want to hear them lol
Thankfully I go to the gym early so there are usually only like 5 people there, so enough room to spread out and not have to hear everyone!
But it was nice of that guy to apologize to you.. Maybe you will get more like that.

Good luck on finding a solution..

Really? I'd feel sorry for them because they are obviously not taking their gym time to full advantage. When I get my time, I'm working my *kitten* off to the point where a phone conversation isn't even possible. And I would then go to management or switch gyms. That's crazy!

That is funny! I would hope they're not taking calls right in the middle of Zumba class! LOL

I've gotten really good at tuning people out as I concentrate on my workout. I don't care if they talk on the phone or pick their noses - I figure it's their time to use as they want. If if doesn't interfere with what I'm doing, I'm fine with people using what ever device they want.

It don't bother me when ppl are on a cardio machine bull****in on the phone as long as they are not texting sittin on a bench while I am in a pissy mood wanting to use that bench and I have to do another exercise while they take up space texting for half an hour. I always have my cell phone with me and only except phone calls from my fiance when he calls me on his break. If it wasn't for him callin me I wouldn't even have my phone with me. But mostly @ my gym when ppl talk on the phone they normally take it to the bathroom or up from by the windows and talk away from everyone else. Glad my gym doesn't have alot of ignorant ppl. I always just tryn stick to myself.
  • Most gyms have a no cell phone policy while working out, I would say something to someone that works there if the person is rude about it or refuses to stop. I cant see how thats safe or polite to talk on your cell phone while working out around other people

ours is a no cell phone gym however I still bring mine because mine is my ipod as well. I have been guilty of talking on the phone while working out but usually its a quick convo. I would never carry on a long conversation. I have been at the gym while ppl are talking to people around them or on the phone but ive never been able to hear them over my music. I cant believe they are that loud!!! Nothing wrong with telling them to take it down a notch!

I wouldn't hesitate to say something especially if you can hear it over your IPOD. :noway:

I take my phone with me because it is my source of music as well. Gotta love the Pandora app. :drinker: I might answer a text from the boyfriend since it is usually about the baby but a phone call can wait until I am done. (plus, if he is calling while I am on my ME time, I know it must be an emergency)

Anyhow, off topic...yea, I totally agree with you on saying something.

Now...how do you tactfully tell the lady singing along to her IPOD at full blast..to shut it? :grumble:

I leave my phone in the car... the other day I saw a woman with a trianer when she took out her phone... She was paying for a trainer, and not even taking advantage of it. I thought he was going to throw the phone out the door.

That'd be great, if I could tune people out. I'd love to learn how. I'm super sensitive to sound, and I realize that so I try to be a bit more tolerable....but when it's the same people day after day, it's rude.

Yeah, I'll text too while on the treadmill or something, that doesn't effect anyone else.

There's one lady there every day who is on the phone the whole time...and she's even done weight machines while using her shoulder to hold the phone to her ear! That's an injury waiting to happen. I don't know how the gym doesn't say something to her. If she spoke English, I might.

When i asked the guy today to be quiet, there qas an Asian lady near me who was getting annoyed too. She doesn't speak any English. After I told him to quiet down, she gave me a thumbs up behind his back.

Someone at our gym does bring their own boombox. They also talk over it. I usually am so concentrated on not falling off the treadmill that it doesn't bother me much. But now, I wonder if it does bother others.

I bring my phine in because it has my music and in case of a family emetgency.

I don't understand people who carry on conversations while at the gym. Why pay a fee and not use the time to your best advantage??? It puzzles me but I can tune them out except when I am waiting to use a treadmill and some chick is strolling along at 2 mph having a detailed conversation about sex life, what a byatch some girl is, what they are going to have to eat when they are done their "workout" (how about breaking a sweat first)--- then its aggravating. But its a small gym, if they signed up for the machine they can use it any way they want, I find something else productive to do. Idiots will NOT affect MY life.

If they are screaming over the sound of their machine then yes, say something b/c they may not know how loud they are but otherwise if you want a silent place to workout and earphones/mp3 players aren’t enough for you, you have to buy a treadmill for your home.

Some old lady started scream talking to someone in our spinning class, the music is beyond loud so I had no idea why she thought that was the place. Someone go off their bike to tell them as much. A class is a group of people there to learn together but if you are in your own world on a machine, that’s your prerogative.

That being said, I've never seen anyone on their cell in a gym other than maybe once someone was checking texts/emails while on a stationary bike.

A big problem I'm noticing now is people walking and texting, how come I have to walk on the wrong side (the left side) of them b/c they are distracted, UGH! That's just a walking beef of mine in general and it's become worse with cell phones. I love playing people chicken, I stick to the right side just like cars in 80% of the world do and won't move, 99% of people move once they see I'm taller than them (5'8 so nothing scary just above average) the other 1% only now b/c I'm getting older therefore nicer and the invincible teenager feeling has gone away gets me twisting out of the way at the last second. No big deal for me, its not an awkward move I’m good at it but it saved them a pretty painful smash in the shoulder that's for sure. Yay Canada where everyone is NOT packing guns! I wouldn’t even pretend to try this in the US.

Don't flame me - we all have pet peeves and walking on the WRONG side is mine.

I dont use my phone when I am exercising but at the same time the only time it bugs me is if someone is just sitting on a machine on their phone and not using it.
I get how people dont want to hear others conversations but it seems like a thin line to me when if someone wants to chat on their phone while they exercise cuz they feel its their me time but someone else wants to not hear them cuz it their me time. I mean how do you really settle it.I dont consider it rude to me its the same thing as the people that come in with a friend and chat and laugh the whole time.(which also dosent bother me)
But I also really zone out I dont even wear headphones half the time and am pretty unaware of whats going on around me.
which makes it easy not to be bothered by it.

I had some chick do this the other day and I turned up my music to drown her out... but 2 other ladies shot her a nasty look or two.

I do bring my phone into the gym with me for a couple of reasons.... my music and Nook app are on it ( use the nook app when doing a cool down on the bike), but also because of my husband and son. DH had a massive heart attack in november and is waiting on a pacemaker .. we were told today they want him back in an external defibrulator (great technology.. but we had awful luck with it the first time around) until thats done. He was back in the hospital for heart issue last week so he's always a worry..

However I do NOT talk on it while working out. If someone wants me that bad they can text me.

I did however have an unintentionally louder then I thought conversation this Sunday and a woman stopped me to say she wanted to give me and my friend privacy and moved a couple of machines away. I felt terrible and she came back after finishing to wipe the machine down and I apologized again.. i thought she had music playing and didn't realize that I was distracting her that much. She said it was fine and we laughed about it.. but I still feel terrible and am glad she said something
