Well, the cool thing about your stance of not caring what other's think is you don't have to know if it was an insult or not. You can just brush it off regardless.

Cultural attitudes. I'm fat and of a certain look. If I go into an emergency room in pain it will be automatically assumed I am doctor shopping. No medical personnel will listen to me unless I have my tall, handsome, deep-voiced husband there to tell them to check my medical records. (I've never, not once, refilled a pain prescription. In fact, I turn unused drugs back in Every. Single. Time.)
It's about the cultural attitude that because I look a certain way, other baggage is attached.
It's not about someone saying something nasty to me. If I need to (and in sober truth, I haven't since high school) I am clever enough with words and attitude to have some rude nitwit groveling on the floor sobbing for his mother in about five minutes if necessary. So, I couldn't care about that nonsense.
I DO care about whether or not a nurse will repeatedly take my damn blood pressure because no fat lady could POSSIBLY have normal blood pressure.
However, fat people are CULTURALLY CONDITIONED to think they don't deserve good things or nice treatment. Sure, sure, I'm scrappy as hell, and arrogant to boot, but fighting like an angry tiger every damn day of your life just to be treated as an intelligent, thinking, feeling human is exhausting and I don't think one should HAVE to be that way to get treated with common courtesy.
Or to get life-saving medical treatment. Or even appropriate preventative treatment.
This sums it up for me. No one should be discriminated against because of how they look or are perceived. It is this that I find the most offensive.

^I had a hard time reading the long part you quoted because I couldnt' get past the first part where overweight would lead to being accused of med seeker.
If someone could explain that to me I can figure out what the rest said.0 -

I have to think about your question for a bit. I'm pretty sure you've somehow offended me.

Nice debates (and attempts at debates), although I'm not sure this much intellectual stimulation is allowed on MFP forums.
Very much looking forward to the OP's counter to the last comment regarding his profile info.GorillaEsquire wrote: »Seriously, go here:

If you're honestly wanting to debate and/or discuss. I mean it, no snark. Well, there's gonna be snark there, BUT people really do want to debate and discuss.
Dude, you have 4 kids. It's not like you're new to the parenting scene. And it's not only "Breastfeeding versus bottle feeding which is better" debates. I won't lie, I dropped in yesterday. It's not like it used to be in its hay day when we went for the jugular. Over there, there's pretty much nothing you can't debate. Over here, there are a LOT of topics that are off limits. The only thing you can't do over there is person attacks and posting nudity/porn that type of thing. Otherwise, you can debate until your heart is content.

OP, what defines debate/arguement success? Is there a legal definition even if it doesn't include winning a judgement or monetary sum?0

This is a very interesting question. I think 75% of it is due social media, and every small person having semi-anonymous platform. Most people are reactionary in many areas of their lives. Instead of examining inward and firm in who they are (proactive), they get feedback from outside sources and are easily knocked off balance.
We are, indeed, a nation of mostly wimps.0 -

To me its simple....we are human not robots. we have feelings. We all care what people think of us. It might not effect everyone the same. Yes the media doesn't help, but its been that way for generations, its not new. Reality might not be what we think should be, but its up to each individual to believe or not.0
-
Good question! I personally don't give a "BLEEP" anymore. It's taken a long time, but at the end of the day, people are going to believe and think and judge no matter what you say or do. I live for myself now (and my sweet family).0

Well, if you want to spend your energy responding to PERCEIVED prejudices, you may. But it's a powerless position of your own making. Medicine, for example, does operate (pun intended) under groups of assumptions. It would be silly, in a critical situation, to assume the same things about a 20 year old athlete and a 60 year old obese person. Unless you are denied care, service, a promotion at work (and can prove it), I suggest you decide not to feel like a victim in life.
My husband just called from a business trip. He said on his run (marathoner), some young woman hollered at him "TOO OLDDDD" as he jogged by. I mean, really? That's a mean, unhappy individual. He giggled it off.0 -
