Christina Briggs, 26, from Wigan, says she hates being 25 stone but she can't do anything about it because she can only afford junk food. Meanwhile, exercise is out of the question because she doesn't have the funds to join a gym.
Discuss.
It's *kitten*. There is no junk food cheaper than rice + lentils, which are supremely cheap.
Rice is junk food!!!!
But that aside - box of rice just over a £1. Value beans and value bread - Under a £1.
So a quick evening meal of a bowl of rice is more expensive than beans on toast. I would guess a family on the breadline with kids would probably opt for the beans on toast.0 -

I like rice but for me it still falls into this category!
'Junk foods typically contain high levels of calories from sugar or fat with little protein, vitamins or minerals.'
I know rice has some nutrients in, but very few for the calorie cost!
By the way that's an extract from Wikipedia!

Trivial amounts of sugar and fat, so by your own definition - NOT junk food.

'Tis bunk. She could save money buying healthier food and less food in general. I made the same switch and spend anywhere from $50 to $100 less a month on groceries now.0

Isn't rice basically just a starchy carb and isn't starch a complex sugar? (I read that on wikipedia too!)

Sugar is a crystalline mono- or di-saccharide.
Starch is a polysaccharide.
Not the same thing, and clearly not what is being referred to in Wiki's definition of "junk food"

If welfare systems want to spend money on helping people in this situation, I think the thing to do is spend it on education and weight loss management plans (like Weight Watchers, which I think is a good tool for people who are just learning about weight loss). Then, the people who really want to improve their life could take advantage of the memberships and the people who just want to sit and complain can keep on doing that and not cost the welfare system a dime.0

Just because she eats junk food is no excuse for being fat.
She is overeating and consuming to many calories.0 -
That article is written in a biased slant, like it wants to get people upset at people on benefits. I am in the US, not familiar with the Daily Mail.
Rice is food.0 -
This is pretty common in America.0
