I rowed for the first time yesterday. 5000K 40 min. I guess I should row faster. :)

The only one you should be competing against is yourself. Rowing is a serious workout. I've just recently been able to do an hour straight averaging +/-11,500 meters in that time. Only one I judge myself against is me.

I'm sure over time we all improve.

So... I rowed for 60 minutes with resistance on 10 and came in at 11,500 ish.

My comfortable pace seems to be 2:35... and a hard but sustainable effort is 2:20-2:25. If I want to crash and burn really fast 1:59 will do it!

I dropped my heart rate watch on the change room floor and now it is dead. RIP Timex Global Trainer. I estimate my average HR was in the 150-160 range for the most part.

I have to admit I slacked off a lot during the last 10 minutes. So, I think I can aim for 1250 next time.

Yeah, rowing is right up there with running for me :D

Wow - good for you! A resistance of 10?? I'm still at a 3 or a 4 depending on the day.

that's super! I used to row for like 20 minutes at a time and really enjoyed it. then I was shown how my form is off and how it really is to row, and I can barely get a minute done.

    very impressive! rowing's hard!

Please dont compare yourself to others. I think the thread is just to encourage people to use the rower more as it offers one of the best cardio workouts and is quite different. 1. Try and use it regularly, becayse as you practice you get better. 2. Compare your times and distances against your previous times and distances. As far as I understand it the resistance level is kind of irrelevant as the monitor works it all out and its both distance within a certain time or pace you should be looking at.

Yup, form is important... but once you get it... it's a full body workout, arms, core, lats, legs, butt

My glutes are angry with me now... gonna have to foam roll.

I agree with some of the other comments - try not to compare yourself to others. Height and weight make a big difference, so if you compare yourself to a (reasonably fit) giant, your rows will always look slow. Unless you are a giant as well of course!

One thing to do though is to make sure you have a good rowing technique - look at the videos on concept 2 etc. You may find some simple changes in rowing technique give you a big gain in performance - which is good for your own motivation.

If you haven't found it yet, concept 2 have a free logbook where you can store your rowing times etc.

You might want to play around with the resistance, a lower resistance might allow you to row quicker for longer. There's lots of stuff on the concept 2 website on resistance. A lower resistance doesn't seem to equate to a lower intensity workout, although I struggle to fully understand this.

I used to automatically stick the resistance to 10. After reading up about it I switched to using the drag factor, and worked out 130-140 was about right for me (I am heavy, for a normal weight person it is likely to be lower), which is a resitance setting of 6-9 depending on how much dust is in the rowing machine fan.

Rows 8 (7,215m) & 9 (12, 179m) month-to-date total 96,915, Holiday Challenge 115,123m with almost a week left.......it was so nice outside this morning I went for a run rather than rowing. I'll make it up during the weekend!
