I do not understand this fear of the gym that people have?
Can someone elaborate like what you feel that makes the gym so intimidating?

Fear of the unknown, fear of being judged, fear of looking like an idiot.... For me, it was the first and 3rd about the weight room. When I just went in and did it, I owned it. Now, all I care about is that girl I see in the mirror and that's my only competition.0

Some people feel working out is a personal thing; maybe it's shyness or a lack of self-confidence. I think of it as being similar to singing - did you ever know someone who had a really good singing voice that sang in the shower, around the house, etc. that was terrified of singing on stage?0

This. And I have no desire to be judged.0 -

Yuppers. I can go at my own leisure, don't have to wait for equipment, can dress however I like. It's freaking awesome.

Plus I tend to dance between sets. And loudly sing along to highly inappropriate lyrics. It really is awesome.0 -

The gym can and more likely will help with both of those so.

If theres other people around I have a hard time tuning them out and focusing on the workout. Earbuds dont help much. Hyperawareness?0

I went to the gym at the college and tried using their weight machines... I pushed and pushed and pushed and nothing happened, so I thought I was a major weakling and walked away in shame, lol. Come to find out, to use the machines you had to get an access card that went into some slot on the machine to unlock it. Who knew?
So for me, it is just not understanding how the equipment works and feeling kinda silly trying to figure it all out.0 -

I would fear seeing something like this.0 -
We haven't mentioned the possibility that the local gyms near some people could be overrun with a-holes...0

Ahhhhh the gym........my home away from home. People (mostly men) fear ME there. *evil laugh*0

Lol this is an awesome topic ..my fear for the longest time was having gas while lifting something heavy0

There have been some threads on this. Now I have my answer since it is more likely always the same. Just one big insecurity.0

My fear is that there wouldn't be enough weights for everybody else to use while I'm in there.0

LOL my gym has only 3 oly bars and only 8 45 plates. Dumbbells up to 75. When me and sometimes one other guy are doing any of the three big lifts we use all the 45s. There only one bench press and one squat rack too.0 -
HA! I was just totally being a bro there, but I can see how that would be an issue. Especially for deads and squats.0

The strong people in my gym need to work out a schedule or when people can work in with others. the lack of weights and bars really suck. I don't have enough money to get a gym membership since I am paying for school also.

I don't like being looked at while exercising, makes me a tad self conscious0

Well it is human nature right. You don't ever look at people exercise at the gym. I know I do but I see weight and progress from increasing more than like body parts or anything else.
You being self conscious will more likely change once you start to feel good in your own skin. What one way to do that? Consistent exercise.0 -
people, just people in general
