He was doing something else. I go to Planet Fitness and I do them all the time nobody ever looks twice at what I am doing. I do take the dumb bells to the floor section designated for pushups etc adn not in the main weight area.
As others have already said, some PF locations are more laid back than others. You're simply fortunate in that your particular PF facility is more reasonable.
By the way your buddy did not get thrown out because he did that excercise. He got thrown out for being a jack hole. Nobody is ever thrown out for doing any excercise in any gym. The gym employee comes over and tells you to stop doing it. If you stop you get to stay if you don't then you need to go because you are a jack hole not because of the excercise.
Sorry, but you're wrong. Here's proof:

OMGWTFBBQ. Although, if that was up when OP's friend joined, he has no excuse.

I still think it's a franchise specific issue.

That would have pissed me off 'cause I do those all the time (except I do a push up, then pull the dumb bell up)...

Yeah, I do the push up version too, and I've done them with kettle bells, which is a little trickier for balance.

You have got to be effing kidding me?! No deadlifts? How is that even intimidating?? You don't have to be a powerlifter meathead bro dude to do deadlifts. I just watched a toddler do it with pink dumbells. I mean come on......

I've seen folks do those at various gyms (I have an insurance card that gets me into various local gyms). I've seen it at the Y, and PF, as well as my preferred weight lifting gym. Never seen anyone hassled for it.

BTW PF seems to have run into problems by telling a Muslim woman to wear a baseball cap instead of her hijab.

    Warning: strong language.

ETA BTW this is an opinion piece not a news article.

because it is a "powerlifter/body builder move" and PF is catering to people that are scared of those types...

One of my MFP friends had to change gyms recently because her PF removed the barbells and weights.

The PF that just opened in town has no weights/barbells. Deal breaker!

I joined pf at new years, because it was cheap.

The one here is always dead. Never more than 20 people.

I quickly switched. They just don't have any lifting equipment at all at the one here.

Its funny, at pf, I am rock star. At my new gym, I am the slob. Lol

It is remarkable the difference in intensity. At the new gym, there is just a... Kick a$& take names vibe.

ok, this makes no sense. everything I've been reading about fitness now days is actually encouraging people, especially women, to pick up weights and PF is getting rid of them. No wonder if you google Planet Fitness, you do not get a bunch of links about how great they are.

Wait a minute. There was a sign that said don't do it or you get thrown out on first offence and he does it anyway and it surprised him that he got thrown out. I am wrong he didn't get thrown out because he was as jack hole, he got thrown iut because he never learned to read.

Wait, are renegade rows considered deadlifting? I don't know much about this, but I thought deadlifting was something different.

You have to understand... Working hard is enough to make some people feel bad about themselves. The solution is therefore to kick people out when they do push themselves hard.

The thing is, this isn't even an onerously difficult exercise, though it can be challenging.

Is that the same gym that gosh what was it.... something about a girl that was fit... it might have had to do with how she dressed but they asked her to leave or not dress that way or something because it might make the out of shape people feel bad.

I don't remember all the details now but I thought wow that's a dangerous road when we ask people not to flaunt being fit.

What? gah. That's not even such a difficult exercise! That would piss me off so much.

That's ridiculous. I played the video expecting something way less . . . just normal weight move looking. Dumb.

In the PF world anything considered powerlifting/bodybuilding = bad aka sound the lunk alarm...

The New York Times had an article a few years ago about PF and all of the people they've kicked out over the years (I found it recently while trying to figure out the "lunk alarm" reference I saw here). They did indeed make a woman leave, and they apparently make women who wear spaghetti straps/sports bras change.

Dude, he was just using this picture to illustrate just how wrong you were about " no one ever gets kicked out of ANY gym first time" besides, you have no idea what happened.

I actually had no idea about this. I just watched some videos. Is that even safe? It's so loud. If that went off while I was squatting something bad could happen.

The local pf asked a girl I know (hot 19 year old, very fit) to leave because her shorts did not come to a certain length.

Don't you guys ever get sick of talking about how much you hate pf?

And have you ever noticed that every post re: PF starts with "...I have a friend who..."
