@SLHysell I am glad you are ok! The owner was way out of line, and I agree with others that this incident should be reported.
@jessupbrady My 4-legged buddy is not a husky, but she does not mind snow either, or any weather for that matter...
Here is my MIschka chilling in the snow:
And in the rain...
And sunbathing at 102F temperature...Nothing gets to this dog!

Yep - set it WAY too low.
Oh well. I guess I'll have to set it better next time.0 -
I had an absolute terrible run Sunday, I just had no gas. So after fighting for 25 minutes, I decided I should just stop and take it as a short short run and rest. Then that night, my daughter had a stomach bug, so no run yesterday either. But I'm back at it today, feeling good. I think I just needed the rest.

And I know you will all be so jealous of where I get to run! Treadmill and Doctor Who on the IPad. But alas, I am a fair weather runner and I live in southern Alberta, Canada.0 -
@SLHysell . Thanks for sharing that story and glad you are okay. It did remind me of something similar, but not quite as harrowing as your experience.
A few years back I was 2 minutes into my run one block over from my house and a large dog came at me hard from behind and while I tried to evade it he hit me solidly on the side of my right knee and it scared me a lot more from an injury perspective than anything else. I started yelling at the dog to get away from me (never have carried mace, may have to think about it now) and that made the owner really mad as his dog kept heading up the street following me. In any event, somehow this all became my fault in the owners eyes and he shouted at me very loudly. It was all very odd. I avoided that block for awhile but then just went back to incorporating it from time to time. Never saw that person or that dog again.
In any event-67 miles thus far. 10 runs. But nagging foot and knee issues have returned and despite our stellar weather, it is getting tougher to get out the door. We'll see if we make it to the goal of 100+

I appreciate the responses to my questions about running preference. I started running 10 months ago and have such a busy schedule that I feel like I probably struggle with increasing distance and endurance because on a good week I get to run 4 times. I always wonder at what point will it not be hard to run? It is interesting because my legs do okay until about 5 miles and my breathing is okay as long as I pace myself but mentally I battle a lot when I run. I have noticed that it is worse in the winter because I am stuck on the treadmill. I have been watching Netflix and listening to music to try to break it up. I am just looking forward to the weather getting nicer so that I can run outside because it seemed easier to push through outside. I just feel like I am missing a trick that would make it easier.....

@johnsonnelly - personally I don't think I could run day in and day out on a treadmill and find it amazing that you can do as much as you have on it! Getting outside is what is the draw for me. I also visualize how far I am going to run that day before I go out the door. I think though if you go a little past 5 miles - just a little - maybe a quarter mile and do that for a while and then a bit more you will find that the 5 miles is easy as is 6 and maybe 7 is now hard to overcome. I used to run 3-4 miles regularly that was my go to distance. Now when I run less than 5 miles I feel like I am cheating (myself). It just all depends on what you are used to and what you decided is your goal to overcome. This is a quote that I really like:
'Don't limit yourself by what you think you can do. In long distance running the majority of the effort is mental, not physical. If I plan to run five miles and that is mentally what I am prepared for, that is pretty much as far as I can run. With the same conditioning, if I plan to run 26.2 miles, that is doable. I almost never run more than I am mentally prepared to run.'

@Runningmischka - my running buddy! He has never experienced really cold or snow! He gets me out the door pretty much every day and can run really fast!

2/7/15- 3.6 miles (dreadmill)
2/18/15 - 2.5 miles
Finally made it back outside - it was 10F but no wind. There was so much snow on the roads it felt like quicksand, and I had to call it quits after 2.5 miles because I kept twisting my knees.

@Daisy471 Wow, 3 miles @ -7°F degrees! 0°F last night was brutal; even my phone and my running lights quit working. I cannot imagine what -7°F must have felt like and if you're near the lakes the wind must have been excruciating.
I hope you dressed warm & ran well for your 10k!
Luckily there was only a light wind when it was -7. But we do get some pretty brutal winds off the lake, and NE winds usually bring lake effect snow.
I ended up switching to the 5k right before the race. It was -10 with a -28 wind chill. I didn't get cold (even took off the mittens over my running gloves), but didn't want to go into that wind for a mile if I was going to continue with the 10k course. My asthmatic lungs would not have liked that! The race director decided that the half was not going to happen, and everyone who signed up for the half was switched to the 10k. I feel that I made the right decision for me. I ended up running my 3rd fastest 5k, so I'm happy with that!
Sunday's race was called the IceCube - very fitting!0 -

Love that quote! I am by no means in the long-distance category, but this is very helpful for me as I increase my mileage. Your dog is adorable!

Wow! The dog encounters are eye opening. It's something I've never even thought about. I run around the different neighborhoods in our suburb and never even thought about a dog encounter. I've seen plenty of dogs out, but only one that wasn't leashed. And he just wanted to run next to me for awhile before he got bored. Not sure how I would react if I was attacked....
@johnsonnelly - I agree with the comments about getting outside. Occasionally I have to run on a treadmill and it's a lot harder to click of distance than outside. I've tried music, podcasts, Netflix, etc - but I get more tired/bored and inevitably stop after 4-5 miles tops.
Outside there is the feeling of getting to the next point, the changing scenery, more things to visually break up a run.0 -

@daisy471 great job on the 3rd place, very smart idea changing to the 5K.
@shanaber your doggie is a sweetie! Love the quote too
@LoneWolfRunner are you having a heatwave? 12F this morning0 -
@daisy471 congrats on a great run! I spent one year running in the snow/wind/cold before I promptly moved myself back to sunny CA. I am very impressed with you, LoneWolfRunner, Fabnine, etc who are out there on a daily basis.
@shanaber your doggie is adorable.
I ran 5.5 this morning which brings my total up to 81.5 out of 120 goal for the month.0 -
@skippygirlsmom It was in fact noticeably warmer than it has been the past few days...lol... but they are promising more single digits and sub-zero windchills the next couple of days, followed by a weekend of freezing rain. And I wonder why I'm fighting to get miles. This "no-treadmill" vow I took is a bit more challenging than I had hoped...0
-
I love the pictures in this thread and I think I need to go get me some mace. Yikes! I ran 2.5 miles yesterday and 3 miles today.

Chiming in- I've been trying to run 2x a week. I've almost succeeded
Happy to participate even as a minimal runner!!! Just needing some extra cardio- and getting out in the crisp air is preferred to the stale tread mill air.0 -
