What nobody tells you about losing weight

While it's flattering to get compliments, I've found the more weight I've lost, the more embarrassing it's been to reveal how much I've lost in total. When I had lost 40-50 lbs, I proudly stated that number whenever asked. Now, I've lost over 90 lbs and if someone asks, I just say something like "I've lost a little" and try to deflect from giving a precise answer.
Glad I found this thread. So MANY things I never thought about. This quote (thanks Bruce) hits home for me big time. Recently was complemented on the loss and then was asked if I had done it on purpose or was ill. LOL. And now when people ask about the loss or offer me the "one cookie that won't get me fat", I nicely thank them and say no, I don't want to put the "few" pounds I lost back on.
The folks that commented on always being cold...spot on. OMG, I'm in Arizona and freezing (it really does not get THAT cold here) ...never realized how insulated I was carrying 150 extra pounds.
Bones: Yep, scary & painful. Hip, tail, collar bones & ribs have come out from years of hiding. I can't sit and constantly fidgit in my seat, even if it's padded since I lost all of mine.
The annoying people with my excess energy...just happened at a 3 day work meeting. Apologized to the 2 folks sitting on either side of me as my legs would NOT stop moving (I was crawling the walls big time & could not wait for breaks so I could get up & move).
To change my thinking from I'm dieting to I've made a lifestyle change & that I can't go back to how I was eating before. I've always yo yo'ed the weight I lost back & more. I have not cut any foods from my eating plan, but I am planning my meals ahead of time making sure I can have 'my cake & eat it too' & stay within my maintenance range. I probably will have to log for the rest of my life but if it keeps me where I am now, it's worth it. For me it is way too easy to overeat (duh, lol) as I work from home.
I am also a little ashamed to tell how much I weight. When I told my sis she told me that I am anorexic ....and before they told me that " I had fat " ( well it was true tho) but it is funny that no matter what I do there will be someone to tell me it is not right.57 -

I feel like they're disrespecting the discipline and hard work it takes to be healthy ...
For me, I found that I did a complete 180°. I used to be jealous of people that were thin and healthy and fit. No more. I've learned that you don't get many days off being healthy unless you're one of those rare breeds that can eat and eat and eat and not gain an ounce. For the rest of us, it's a daily grind and those people that I was jealous of...they put in the work, daily, to be what they are.
Now I'm more jealous of those who are overweight because they can also eat whatever they want, whenever they want and not think about fitting it into their calories. I have no desire to be like that again, but sometimes I am jealous.
Honestly this would be the biggest thing I never expected. Being defensive when people comment how great it must be to not "worry" because I am lean. Meanwhile being jealous of the people who just don't care and eat whatever they want whenever they want. I truly miss being in denial sometimes (like when PMSing LOL).

LOL, I'm experiencing this more often. Lately I don't even like the smell of a loaf of bread.. I've tried a variety of breads but I have to eat carbs to stablize my weight.

My favorite junk foods don't taste the same and I don't get that mental statisfaction. It made me ponder my emotional habits which I'm currently exploring and monitoring
I am having this problem. Well, I dont see it as a problem but more as a blessing. I used to love oreo cheesecake. I tried some today and yuck!30 -

That some people won't be happy for you, and that's OK. One of my good friends is in a rut right now and just gets upset by seeing other people succeed. She wishes she could be the one to buy a house or lose weight. I go out of my way to never talk about my calorie counting around her because she's made it perfectly clear it will never happen for her. And with that attitude she's right. It took me years to save up the money to buy a house and it will take at least a year to get to my goal weight and smart eating afterwards to stay there. Not everyone is ready to put in the work everyday. Which is fine, I didn't decide to lose weight because of her. I did it for myself.165

I just love the first sentence !! "You will discover bones you forgot (or never knew) you had." Awesome !! The same can be said for muscles also. You sure can discover ones you never knew you had, like "Why does it ache there? Is there a muscle there? I never knew that." Way to go wateryphoenix!!29 -

I can relate to this. People often tell me how I am so lucky. I have a great saying for this " I know it's crazy isn't it? The harder I work the luckier I get"209 -
All of these experiences are motivational. Thanks everyone for your input!28

lol I'm only half way and I'm already doing that.
- the way you get exited about discovering new things about your body. I lie on my back on the bend and feel my tummy and pretend I'm already at goal weight lol
I honestly haven't seen this side of me in forever I can't even imagine how it would feel/look. I'm down 9 pounds in one week!! I still have a ways to go. But I've already noticed a small change !!23 -

I hear ya! I feel like the food container queen when I arrive to work in the morning. Bonus has been money saved from not eating out because I don't want to even attempt to guess caloric content from menus which lack nutritional info.
(Congrats on the 16 pounds lost btw!)

the feeling cold more really hit home last week in new york..couldnt stay warm at all..ended up almost jogging everywhere just to try n keep warm, but i wouldn't want to go back ..

I'm down 110 pounds from my heaviest and I was really not mentally prepared. I still have a lot left to lose, about 30 pounds. I grew up being mocked a lot for being fat, so now, in general, I avoid making contact with strangers when I am walking around and if someone whistles, my first thought is that they are making fun of me. That's the bad part.
The good things - I enjoy life more. I try new things that I never would have before. The best thing though, is that I have inspired both of my parents to eat better and both have lost weight.

I sleep better and my mood is better.
It's hard work getting the weight off but too easy to put it back on.
I don't want it to be on my mind 24/731 -

Yeah, I know how that is! You need to eat better and exercise was the way they put it, but they were saying (truthfully!) that I was too fat. Now some of my family is stressing because they think I'm too thin. Can't win, not even trying anymore, just doing what I want. Not that my family isn't hit or miss when it comes to life advice anyway, mostly miss, bless them. They mean well, though.21 -
After a really tough year last year and losing my Dad I decided to do a challenge at my gym....a nutrition based one and kg loss and cm loss is done as a group loss not individual which I love cause its not about winning as a person but a group, into Week4 and something this week has just clicked all of a sudden I feel strong again, strong enough to work harder my head is not telling me you cant do anymore then you are doing but more like I can hear my Dad in my head saying "Dont you dare use me as an excuse get in there and get moving and get it done" lol, whatever it is its working70

That even if nobody else knows or cares that you stayed within your calories for the day (everyone around me is SICK of hearing about calories),it still feels wonderful going to bed knowing that you are strong and in control and that you CAN do what seemed so impossible for so long!
I am also amazed that even my memory has improved with the change in diet/exercise (I know how many calories are in about a million different things without even looking at the labels haha),your food and activity affect EVERYTHING!66 -
How bloating and disgusting it feels to have a day where you eat the way the old you did. After Valentine's Day I couldn't wait to go back to not eating much!
Omg, this. I decided for that day to eat how I normally would, and when I tracked it all at the end of the day it was well over 3000 cals!! Couldn't wait to get back to eating half of that lol. Its definitely surprising how eating less becomes much easier and routine rather than feeling like you're hungry and suffering all the time, I feel so much better these days.39 -
The way your goals change - from just wanting to lose enough to get in an acceptable range, to wanting what left of you to look fit and not soft, to wanting to see if you can squat more than your body weight or run a half marathon. Just 'cause.
One thing I'm not thrilled about is how lean my arms have gotten. If I'm cold, you can't really tell, but if I'm warm at all, the veins start a-poppin'. When I do upper body lifts, they look like an anatomy drawing of the vascular system.
And when you've maintained your success for a while ... having the people that spouted the popular diet nonsense at you come back and ask for advice. Taking you seriously this time.38 -
Not seeing lot of guys posting on here, so let me add a few from a dude's perspective... brace yourselves. I have lost 40 pounds over 7 months. I no longer suffer from dicky-do disease. You know... when your stomach hangs out further than your dicky do. And seriously, how much different the "little guy" looks. Maybe a bit vain, but true nonetheless. How funny women can be. I was asked to walk around a room so the women could see my "new physique". How much more comfortable a size 38 when you're actually a size 38 (no more "comfort waist" for me!).

This isn't really a happy one, but it's true: losing weight might not make you happy.
I lost about 20 pounds, which doesn't sound like a lot, but on my tiny 5'4 frame it was a huge difference! However, I still deal with negative body image sometimes, and it's something that's gotten a lot better, but I'm still working on. I also went through bouts of anxiety and depression after losing weight, and then I realized that it wasn't tied to my body, but they were separate issues on their own.62
