April 2015 Running Challenge

I love the pics of all the folks running together at races. The one thing i hope to do in the future is find some friends to do HM's with...or join a running club or something. It seems like a lot of the fun is comradery before and after the race. When you go solo, it feels like you just sorta show up, run...hang around a bit and leave.
A race question for you vets. One thing that threw me off was my running app was counting off distance faster than the race markers. It was just a little bit each mile...but added up to about a .25 mile for the race. I'd only run a couple of 5ks before and the distance was dead on. Is that pretty normal?...I imagine a GPS is an approximate distance..but can be bit off. Just wondered for training purposes if I'm going as shorter distance than I thought....
I am not sure if what the others posted in response, but google the term "running the tangents".
Basically, courses are marked in a way where the official distance is measured by the shortest legal path taken. But not everyone runs this way. If you run the outside edge of the street around a curve or turn, you are running more miles than the shortest legal path possible. If you weave in and around people, run around cars, running around potholes, all these little additions add up to your total distance. Also, stopping for McDonalds in the middle of your race will also add onto your total miles. ;-)
I will have to find a few good articles on this and post them in the group.

OK, was unable to post here over the weekend and Monday, but congrats to everyone who raced this weekend! Way to rock it! @briebee7 @SonicDeathMonkey80 @Training2BeFast @shanaber @gabbo34 and @kristinegift
I am sure I missed people, sorry!
It was a beautiful day for an HM in Des Moines for the Hy-Vee/Drake Road Races! Missed my goal by 32 seconds, but still a PR of 1:55:32! Oddly, my left shoulder hurt, but my legs were good.0 -
4/1 - Nice 3.1 miles on indoor track
4/2 - Brutal 4.75 miles of "hilly" treadmill
4/4 - 10 miles, nice mix of hills
4/6 - 4 miles on indoor track
4/8 - 4 miles on indoor track (33:16...pretty speedy for me)
4/9 - Another hot, humid 5 miles on a "hilly" treadmill (Total 30.85/110)
4/10 - 4 miles on indoor track
4/12 - 11 miles, on the windy side, but otherwise nice
4/13 - 2 recovery miles - maybe should have skipped it...ouch!
4/14 - power outage = no alarm = unplanned rest
4/15 - 4 miles on indoor track
4/16 - 5 miles on treadmill (nice mix of hills, tempo and a few short "sprints")
4/17 - 4 miles on indoor track; weather forecast is making the 12-miler for the weekend look difficult to get in
4/18 - 10.4 miles; managed to squeeze in a shorter run than I planned between the thunderstorms
4/20 - 4 miles on indoor track
4/21 - 4 miles on indoor track
4/22 - planned rest day, part of my pseudo-taper. Blah. HM on Sunday, then another in 5 more weeks...don't need no stinkin' taper FYI, I don't post my weight workouts, stationary bike or other workouts here. So, some of those days not listed had other workouts.
4/23 - 5 easy miles on treadmill ("base pace" with a few burst of tempo and sprints...no hills)
4/24 - 4.5 miles on indoor track (Total 89/110)
4/26 - 13.41 miles, HM.
4/28 - 4 miles on indoor track0 -

75 miles again for me, but this time I'm only counting the miles I run. Walking miles are just a bonus.

4/3 - 4 miles - total: 7 miles
4/6 - 7.5 miles - total 14.5 miles

Amendment: If I walk a total of less than 5 minutes out of 90, I'm not going to try to take the walk breaks back out of my mileage total.
4/12 - 4.5 miles - total 44.45
Another amendment: I can't differentiate running time and walking time when I run outdoors, so I'm counting the whole thing. I think I prefer the treadmill, overall.
4/13 - 7 miles - total 51.45
4/14 - 2 miles - total 53.45

@kristinegift Congratulations on your half. I am originally from NJ. What exit are ya? :-)
I grew up in Union County, lived in Bayonne for a bit, moved down to Eatontown, then Brick before moving to Alabama.
No idea what exit I am! But I live in Princeton. I moved out here just last September for grad school Pretty sure I drove through Eatontown yesterday (but then again I could be mistaken as my NJ geography is awful).
I did a quick lookup on your race. Sounds like a nice route. Not only did you have to drive through Eatontown (Exit 105 off the GSP) but you ran through the back side of my old work site (Ft. Monmouth).
Princeton is exit 67 off I-295 (from the south) or exit 8 from the Turnpike for those coming from the North.
I remember we used to have our State Wrestling Finals in Jadwin Gym in Priceton back in my day.skippygirlsmom wrote: »@kristinegift since you are in Princeton technically you don't have an exit. In case you don't know the big joke (at least for people who live outside of Jersey) is that everyone lives off an exit off the garden state parkway, so when you say you are from Jersey people say "what exit?"
I'm sure I missed people - congrats to everyone this weekend!!!
This poor Princetonian is learning so many Jersey things today!
@kristinegift Go to any diner in NJ and order a Egg Cheese and Taylor Ham (or pork roll) on a hard roll (with a side of home fries). Then tell me what you think. :-)
@kristinegift and @stoshew71 But don't embarrass yourself, as a life long Jerseyan I can tell you that you should ask for Pork Roll and not Taylor Ham LOL Be sure to have fries with brown gravy on them. :-) Oh yeah and send me down some pizza PLEASE!!!

Short 3 miler as part of my taper week, so I did it mid-day in the heat & humidity (80 degrees, 80%) then hit the weights afterwards as it felt a bit too short. Ended up riding 45 miles yesterday as my shorter 8 mile Sunday long run also felt too easy.
I think I'm missing the point of a pre-marathon taper

I did a short three miler as a part of my taper today, too...
Then I did a thirty minute open water swim and a ninety minute bike ride.
I too, cannot taper.
On the other hand, met this guy on my bike ride today:
63ish miles this month. Fail.0
