Yikes! I went to the doctors today and she told me I should be drinking half my weight in water! I'd be in the bathroom 24/7 if I ever drank that much! How do you drink enough in a day?

I think the doctor meant half your weight in ounces. If you weigh 200lbs drink 100 ounces.
Didn't you ask what he/she meant when you were told this?
You would actually die if before you were able to drink this much.0 -
I bought a big cup from walmart that holds 1 liter/32 oz. I TRY to drink that 2 times a day, but it doesn't always happen.0

Yes, that's what I meant. It's still a lot! If I drank 100 ounces a day I think I'd not be able to leave the house.0

I'm not a doctor but when I am thirsty I drink if I am not thirsty I do not drink...unless were are talking about beer of course.0 -
You get used to it. For the first couple of days, yeah, you might be peeing more. It was every 15 minutes for me for a while there, lol!
It helps if you sip over the course of time - I try to get 8 ounces in over the course of an hour.
You can count things like coffee and tea, too. Many folks here tell you to evaluate how well you're hydrated based on the color of your pee - light yellow or paler is what you're going for

Not a doctor. Do know that there IS an upper limit and that you CAN drink too much and end up flushing out useful things like minerals, and electrolytes and make yourself really sick (hyponatremia).
Mayo Clinic seems like a reputable source.

I always remember the news story about a radio station that was having a contest where several people had to drink so much water every hour or so without using the restroom. If you used the restroom you were out of the competition and the last one standing won - a car or something. One of the contestants died.0 -
You have to go way overboard to drink enough water to kill yourself. Drinking 100 oz over the course of a day will not do that.
I try to drink a minimum of 40 oz of water a day. On top of that I drink anywhere from 16-32 oz of coffee per day.
I drink less if I'm not thirsty...I drink more if I'm really thirsty. I am one of the ones who goes by the color of my urine. If it is pale and almost colorless, than I figure I'm hydrated enough.0 -
I always have water handy and drink a lot. I do not track it. I'm sure some days I hit 100 oz and others I do not
Did your doctor say why you were to drink this much? Have you had problems with constipation? Is it to keep you so hydrated you can't stand to drink soda or other high calorie drinks? To help with weight loss?0 -
I got told that when I was pregnant, to drink at least 8 8-oz glasses of water per day at minimum, but try for half my body weight in ounces of water. The 8 glasses were a minimum. They say that at Weight Watchers too.0

I also go by color of urine. But, I love water and usually have a glass nearby most of the day, so it is rarely a concern.0

The radio station needs to be sued. Of course, a person can die from drinking so much water in a short amount of time.

It takes a few days for your body to adjust to getting enough water. I used to never drink water and I started drinking minimum 4 cups (32 oz) a day and at first I was peeing every ten minutes. After a couple of days it tapered off to a normal amount of bathroom usage. I would suggest upping your water intake by 16 oz every few days until you get to the recommended amount a daily water intake0

I'm 27 weeks pregnant, so I make it a point to drink at least 96 oz a day (I have a 32 oz jug that I make sure to drain three times before the day ends). The first week or so you'll spend a lot of time in the can, but your body adjusts. And I've had no constipation, no swelling, and I feel really good, so I'm sure it helps (it's especially important in pregnancy to reduce the odds of a uti or cramping, as well). When I'm not pregnant I shoot for 6-8 cups per day. And let your urine be your guide, lol.0

Oh yeah - it's much easier if you replace other beverages with water, rather than trying to drink that much water on top of other beverages!0

This all the way!! As long as you're urine is yellow/light yellow, you're good! Mine is always a darker yellow in the morning, but by noon, it's very light and stays that way throughout the day. Urinating is very good for you. You're getting rid of waste (ya know, that stuff that our body WANTS to get rid of). So what if you go 4-5 times a day or whatever? How long does a bathroom break really take? As long as you don't have any medical issues, you should be good to drink half of your weight in ounces, maybe a little more or maybe a little less. Besides, there's water in many foods too, so it doesn't all have to come from only clear water. Juice, soup, milk, cucumbers, watermelon, coffee, tea, soda pop, etc all contribute to an individual's hydration. Instead of worrying over the exact number of cups/ounces of plain water, just check your pee. Keep it simple!

We once made cakes with blue and green food colouring and... Well... We had a nappy that looked like it was full of the goop they threw around on Hook.
My friend once thought she was dying when her wee was red/pink. Red wine was the culprit.
I've upped my water by having half a pint before each meal. And I drink loooooads of tea.0 -
There actually IS purple urine, or at least, purple-blue. You get that if you've had some urologic procedures with dye or if you've been treated with intravenous methylene blue dye for some reason. We see it in the hospital from time to time and it's always sort of shocking.0

My honey told me one day that he had red urine. Of course, I freaked out and told him he should go to the doctor because it could be blood. That's when he told me it only happens when he eats fresh beets and it goes away quickly, and he'd eaten fresh beat at his meal. I've never had that happen, and I love beets.0 -
I always drink half my weight in water. For me that's 3 waterbottles a day. It's not that much If you drink them gradually. Yes at first you pee a lot but your body gets used to it.

One note: B-Vitamins make your pee florescent yellow too. Doesn't necessarily mean that you're dehydrated.

Except some people have jobs where they can't be running to the bathroom all the time. I am lucky if I get a bathroom break during my 12 hour shift.0 -
You get used to it, I had a bad dehydration/exhaustion episode a couple weeks ago that landed me in the emergency room. I now drink well over a gallon a day and after about a week I didn't need to go as much.0
