    Nicer weather in the UK this week, so I'll go back to extending the commute home a bit. Only gives me a few extra miles, but it all helps

    After work is hard to fit in the time but this is exactly what I do. Direct to work but I stretch my ride back home out an additional 5 miles per commute.

    They're some good times and distances.
    I didn't extend mine yesterday, torrential rain and a strong headwind had crushed my spirit within 5 minutes!
    I should be on target for 250 miles this Month if I keep the average up.

    Very nice and good job. And yeah... headwind is a total crusher for me. I am a big guy (270lb) and tall (6'7") which creates a LOT of drag so when the wind hits it can darn near stop me dead in my tracks. Haaate that. It's not so bad now I have a 22lb road bike but I used to commute with a heavy steel MTB and man what a workout. Haha

    Man, where do you all live? I get worn down doing 12 miles at an average place of 14 mph, but the entire area I live in has nothing but huge hills. I doubt there is one flat surface anywhere. I love it!!!

    You're lucky, I have to drive 40 minutes out to find hills.

    Hills make a HUGE difference in average speed and effort required. So don't worry if you are not putting in as many miles as someone else as you are likely getting much stronger then those others at climbing!
    tdatsenko wrote: »
    Yup, average speed is usually not a great indicator of bike effort. When I ride outside on the hills (700 ft of elevation every 10 miles) near my house I have trouble doing more than 14 mph for an hour. Inside on my rollers I can do 18-19 mph for an hour. Unless you have a power meter, it's really hard to compare bike effort.

    A ride with 50ft/mile of climbing is considered to be a reasonably challenging ride—and very challenging for new cyclists. 75ft/mile is a tough ride for just about anyone, even the stronger ones (the stronger ones just recover more quickly). 100 ft/mile is a really tough ride. If you consider the Ft/Mile together with the distance, you'll get a sense of how tough that ride will be.

    If you can, do ride in the flats also. The physical adaptation is slightly different. I can easily drop the guys I ride with on the flats but struggle to hold on with them in the hills. (They live in the foothills and ride hills daily). Pulling and holding at 20+mph for 2-3 hours is much easier for me than riding up slight inclines (<5%) at more than 16mph for a few minute. I ride hills in the weekends when permissible.

    Likewise. I am ashamed at how little time I can actually sprint before gassing out. So I am just now starting to incorporate sprints into my rides and commutes and the neighborhood I am in has just enough hills to do some HIIT but eventually I will surpass the challenge they offer and have to find something else. (Which is why I still MTB on the weekends).

    42 more miles of flatland riding today. Wanted to get in a bit more mileage this week, but will deal with it over the next few weeks. My northern commuter has finally been tuned up so I'm curious how it'll ride once I return to the hilly northeast on Monday.

    5/5 - 16 miles
    5/6 - 12 miles
    5/7 - 12 miles
    5/8 - 12 miles
    5/9 - 20 miles
    5/10 - 12 miles
    5/11 - 10 miles
    5/13 - 17 miles
    5/15 - 42 miles

    Goal: 500 miles
    Total: 153 miles
    Remaining: 347 miles (/ 16 days = 21.7/day)

    Okay, I'm pretty envious of most of you guys. I look at your numbers and you seem like Superheroes.

    For what it's worth, I'm down 40 from when I started and still have 50 to go. I finally felt like I wasn't having a heart attack anytime I did anything more than walk around the block, and it was a sunny day and I wanted to get outside...so I dug the bike out of the basement and started riding. I was sore, but I loved it. Now I'm doing it as much as I can. I was really excited when I got over 10 miles.

    The local cycle shop does group rides every week, and they go about 20 miles. My goal is to be able to make it on one of those before the snow comes back.

    Here's what I have so far:
    18-Apr - 1.7 @ 6.7 mph
    19-Apr - 8.0 @ 7.5 mph
    26-Apr - 6.1 @ 9.4 mph
    27-Apr - 5.9 @ 10.8 mph
    28-Apr - 3.0 @ 10.1 mph
    29-Apr - 4.7 @ 9.8 mph
    29-Apr - 7.1 @ 11.7 mph
    30-Apr - 11.4 @ 11.6 mph
    1-May - 4.9 @ 11.9 mph
    1-May - 10.3 @ 8.9 mph
    2-May - 2.2 @ 8.5 mph
    3-May - 16.4 @ 9.1 mph
    4-May - 10.9 @ 11.0 mph

    Not doing to great, only 10 rides in this month so far. On the bright side I made my 5 mile goal today. Hopefully, I can get at least another 10 more rides in before the end of the month.

    You're already going some notable distances so just keep pushing yourself and eventually the speed will come. Use your gears if you have them and try standing and pedaling for short periods (this will also relieve some pressure and restore circulation). Also, MPH is highly dependent on if you are riding on hills or flat as well as headwinds. Keep it up!

    Could this be tracked with a Garmin Connect, Strava or MapMyRide community setup?

    @DesertGunR - they have a 30 day return policy. I'm returning it tomorrow. I already have two bikes. :)

    I'm using MapMyRide. It's free and syncs with MFP seemlessly.

    Some people like Strava. I tried it and it does seem to have a little better interface. What I didn't like was that when I tried it I manually input a test ride just to see if it syncs with MFP, and it did but once it showed up in MFP it would let any changes be made. It wouldn't even let me delete it.

    Thanks!

    I certainly would be faster without hills. There is a hill that I have to climb to get home. It's 130 foot climb over a mile. The first few times I had to get off halfway up and rest and then walk the rest of the way. Now I can make it up, although I'm in the lowest gear and doing about 3-4 mph. It's hard to steer that slow. But it feels like victory when I make it to the top!

    Strava can be a pain but I use it to gauge my efforts and keeping tabs on my ride buddies. The most frustrating thing with Strava is the inability to export your data (free version but not sure on paid) and that it loves to modify the data uploaded (it's ok with some Garmin models). Strava always short change my elevation and distance. I upload to both Endomondo and Strava from my bike computer (actually a Sony Xperia Active running IpBike app for cycling and real phone, HTC One M7, with same app for my walks). I use Endomondo because it synchronizes with MFP and I don't have to modify calories per posting as I use a very conservative setting. I also use Ride w/GPS to review and plan routes.

    Ended up getting my guest to join me on my guest bike for a ride around the island today, which was a nice bonus on the fitness front. Always happy to introduce a lapsed/infrequent rider back to the sport. Still, hoping to get in a long 3+ hour ride tomorrow after dropping him off at the airport, as I'll be back in the land of the crazy rolling hills Monday.

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Darkness is falling by about 5:30 pm now and the days are becoming chilly. Yep ... winter is setting in.
    Nevertheless, I have already blown past my km total for May last year! :smiley: So here's hoping for decent weekends this month so that I can keep it up.
    My goal this month isn't distance ... although that's always part of it ... instead my goal is to get out there at least once each weekend (except the last weekend of May) and do a climbing ride. I live in a very hilly area right now which presents me with a huge challenge because I am a flatlander. I'm not a mountain goat like the rest of the people around here. So now that I'm getting lighter, this month, my plan is to work on climbing.
    Let's get started ...
    May ...
    02 Sat - 37.43 km with 612 metres of climbing
    03 Sun - 30.04 km with ... next to 0 metres of climbing (relatively flat recovery ride)
    09 Sat - 27.5 km ... with next to 0 metres of climbing
    10 Sun - 41.03 km ... with 764 metres of climbing
    Sub-total: 137 km
    Getting chilly down here ... we've had a blast of winter this past week, and today's ride was quite frosty at times.
    16 Sat - 22.3 km ride with 557 metres of climbing
    17 Sat - 26 km flatter ride along the foreshore
    Sub-total: 185.3 km
    Cut my ride short today due to some nasty downpours and lightning. Never quite 100% comfortable that I'm not a lightning rod when riding in the rain, even on a rubber wheeled carbon fiber bike. Still, I'm not sure if it is because I don't shave my arms/legs, but my aerodynamic drag seemed to improve after getting soaking wet, which helped me complete the 30 mile ride at 18mph (vs. my usual 16)... either that or fear of lightning.
