I don't have an issue with low carb or those that choose it for reasonable reasons such as a life choice and preference or recommended by specialists/doctors but not because it's "cool" or they heard it's a fast way to lose weight......I have friends who are low carb due to preference we have no issues...at all.
I have the issue when it is said...you don't have to count calories just carbs to lose weight or they accuse people of "attacking like a pack of lions" etc...that is their view...
it is a back and forth due to the facts that low carb is not a requirement for weight loss being said frequently and them disagreeing without backing it up.
Fine eat low carb but don't spread misinformation...and don't play the victim.0 -
I wish people would stop slinging insults and just use the Flag > Report feature for posts that are clear violations of the Community Guidelines: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/welcome/guidelines and let the moderators deal with them.
1. No Attacks or Insults and No Reciprocation
a) Do not attack, mock, or otherwise insult others. You can respectfully disagree with the message or topic, but you cannot attack the messenger. This includes attacks against the user’s spelling or command of written English, or belittling a user for posting a duplicate topic.
b) If you are attacked by another user, and you reciprocate, you will also be subject to the same consequences. Defending yourself or a friend is not an excuse! Do not take matters into your own hands – instead, use the Report Post link to report an attack and we will be happy to handle the situation for you.0 -

I personally had bad long term results from trying low-carb on 3 different occasions but if it suits an individual it's as good a way as others to meet calorie defecit requirements

Your question confuses me. If you are at a deficit, whether you count it or not, CI<CO. One does not need to be aware of it for it to work. But being aware makes it easier to allow it to work.0 -

No personal attacks allowed in the forums
Like telling all low carb dieters, not to mention all vegans, some vegetarians, lactose intolerant individuals, as well as anyone with a dairy allergy that they are going to hell because they don't/can't eat ice cream? A personal attack like that, you mean? Pointing out the mental instability that must precede that sort of comment is not a personal attack, nor is pointing out that carbs (including those in her precious ice cream) do not cure mental illness.
Perhaps less rocky road and more Prozac (or Thorazine... just sayin') is in order in this particular case.
Please source this accusation so we can all read the posts where that has happened
Never mind I just saw the obvious joke that you're basing your diatribe on
How come when she jokes about low carbers going to hell it's just a joke, but when I joke that carbs obviously don't cure psychopathy it's "abuse" or a "personal attack"? Double standard much?
It's not a joke about how low-carbers can go to hell. It's a joke about how living without ice cream is like being in hell.0 -

I con't understand your question. You're in a deficit, which is the definition of how CICO works. Just because you're not counting calories doesn't mean the deficit doesn't exist, you just know you're in a deficit because of the effect you can see, the weight loss.
What are you even asking?0 -

Has anyone ever said that it doesn't? If a tree falls in the woods with no one around to hear it, does it make a sound? What's the point of your question?
It was brought up as a warning. Why warn about something if it's not harmful? What's so dangerous that people need to be cautious before exchanging information with people who don't count calories? This is the remark that lead to my question:
"be forewarned there are lots there who do not believe you need to count calories to lose weight...just carbs."
What are the dire consequences that will befall OP if he ventures into the LC group without advance knowledge of the existence of people who are at a deficit or maintenance without counting calories?
The actual warning should be to ignore the people who say you can eat 5000 calories of something and not gain weight because it's healthy whatever. I doubt you'd find that info in the low carb group since I usually associate that with the Freelee followers, but I guess there's some paleo crazy person somewhere who thinks they can eat 50lbs of bacon and not gain. I'm thinking every group has the outlier that doesn't understand how weight loss works.0 -

But she's warning about the beliefs in there, which means she's basing it on what she's read in that group. There are two very long and involved threads, referenced in the FAQ, listing pros and cons of counting or not, but both cover that you can't lose without a deficit. The debate is whether or not people have more success micromanaging everything or only keeping carbs low and intuitively eating less on their own. It also acknowledges that even if not counting works when you have a lot to lose, it may be less effective as you get closer to goal.
Which brings me back to - exactly what is so dire that it necessitates a warning?0 -

Coincidence or no?
Just FYI, per community guidelines:
" If you have concerns about another poster, or wish to report a guideline violation, the only appropriate venue is to use the Report Post link or to message a moderator or Olivia, MFP's Community Manager. You may not air such concerns on the message boards themselves."
You gave me the helpful advice not to personally attack, so I'll return the favor - don't air personal grievances on the forums. You're welcome.
Trust me, the person posting the offensive comments is the one punished; not the person who tells the offender that they are reporting them
Also, I'm so glad you finally took the time to read the community guidelines. It only took how long…0 -

ETA: as a cautionary note for you...not everyone here has english as the first language and picking apart a post based on words used could be construed as making fun of them for not knowing how to speak english...be careful with that...esp since I am from Canada...my native tongue could be french...

It helped cure my PCOS and I was able to have a baby. It works. Everyone's body metabolizes things differently, and most carbohydrates break down into glucose. (In a very basic explanation). It can also be important for someone with diabetes / insulin reasons. Or celiac disease. Fiber is metabolized differently, for example.0 -
Hi. I'm doing keto for PCOS, as well. And weight loss and fertility reasons (goes along with PCOS and the insulin resistance.) I'm not in a group, but you can add me. I see that there are a lot of people blowing up this thread, and I didn't read it all, I only read about half of what was here. But I'm here. Hi. Just be sure to tell me who you are when you friend me, because I don't accept blank requests. Lol, too many random people wanting weird stuff for that.0

OP - I do feel a little bad that you are new here, asked what you thought was an innocent question, and got sucked into what has been a very long week of even more arguments, ridiculous posts, and rampant flagging than normal.
However, when people have tried to ask you some clarifying questions and/or given you links to some things to do further research, you responded fairly snippily, and as such, the gif fest has commenced, interspersed between the flagging...
I expect this thread will get locked imminently...0 -

DM, insulin resisitance, PCOS are a few of illnesses that are treated with low carb.
There is that group yes but be forewarned there are lots there who do not believe you need to count calories to lose weight...just carbs.
If you are on a low carb diet for health reasons good luck and perhaps check into getting an appointment with a dietician (registered) to get more education on the topic.
Does CICO no longer work if I don't actually count the calories going into my body?
That was my question as well. I DIDN'T count calories to lose weight (and I wasn't low carb).
The act of calorie counting is not 100% necessary for 100% of the people.
