    March Cycling: 409.33 km (254.34 miles) = 21 hours 55 min
    April Cycling: 384.15 km (238.7 miles) = 20 hours 35 min
May Cycling: 259.06 km (160.9 miles) = 14 hours 5 min (including 45 min on trainer)

It is winter. The sun is setting at 4:45 pm, there's snow on the mountain, and it is cold. But happily, this is the month where daylight hours will start increasing again ... just need to make it through June. :)

    June Totals

01 Mon - 60 min on bicycle on trainer

03 Wed - 50 min on bicycle on trainer

06 Sat - 100 kilometre ride on our Bike Friday Pocket Llamas (folding bikes). The route was relatively flat, but had the added challenge of rain for the first half of the ride. Fortunately it was a warm day for winter, and wasn't at all windy for a change!

That was the longest distance we have ridden the folding bikes so far. It was kind of a test ride to see how we would go over that distance. We were reasonably comfortable. I was having a few back/right hip issues, but stretching seemed to help.

100.72 km in 6 hours 25 min 34 sec total.
(Moving time was 5 hours 31 min 26 sec)

08 Mon - 60 min on bicycle on trainer

    Sub-Totals
June Cycling Inside: 170 minutes on bicycle on trainer in basement
June Cycling Outside: 100.72 km (62.5 miles) in 330 min cycling outside
June Walking: 19.9 km (12.3 miles) in 245 min
June Time: 745 min (12 hours 25 min) walking + cycling + some extra time climbing flights of stairs

I'll post my updated stats tomorrow, but a question for everyone. I'm finding that the day I ride or run, I have a heck of a time eating my minimum calorie goal. I'm just not hungry, like at all. If I skip a day or two, omg there isn't enough food on the planet. This past week my net cals was less than a thousand for four out of the seven days. Any suggestions?? I don't want to crash and burn...I want to get better and better. But I'm concerned I'm not eating enough...

My diary is open if you want to take a look. Thanks

How do you all track distance? I was just going to use my smartphone, but would a bike-specific device be better?

Congrats on the new bike! To track distance, you can use Map My Ride or a similar app, but they will drain your battery if you're going for a long ride. A simple bike computer (like a CatEye) will give you speed and basic distance but you can't download to anything. If you get serious and want a good bike computer, go to your bike store and ask about Garmins or something similar. They will let you track a whole lot, and some of them will also give you maps, etc. Enjoy your rides!

I find strava overestimates my calories expanded by a factor of around 2. I usually don't eat them back on the same day and just save all of them for the weekend or social occasions.

  • So glad I found this! Been looking for these mileage challenges. I just got back on the bike Monday and Tuesday and the had flare up yesterday. So I'm not sure when I'll be back out there, but right now I want to try today as ibuprofen worked some manic this morning.

I'm going to set my goal for 50 for the rest of the month and see what happens! :)

Rode out to a few more ballgames and did some commuting today on the bike. Still, I had to replace my 5th broken spoke on my city commuter in the past 2 months today, so instead of re-building the wheel, I ended up ordering a second set of wheels/tires/cassette for that beater bike which should show up in a week and shave 4lb from that beast (as I'm trying out the shimano R501s w. some michelin lithion 2s - for $145 for the wheels, tires, tubes, and cassette via wiggle).

A good rule of thumb is that you burn ~35-40 calories per mile while riding.
Most calculators I have used have seemed to be over by a bit (45-55 cal/mile).

I am not sure about why you might not be hungry on days you run/bike. I find it to be the opposite for me. I am usually insatiably hungry after I bike.

I'm not sure about miles, but hoping to go cycling at least 3 times a week (twice to volleyball, and a recreational one).

This will commence either tomorrow or Tuesday, as my bike is in for repair. Until this, I had been cycling 3 times a week :)
