What nobody tells you about losing weight

I am really realizing how true this is. I am working for the third year as a seasonal at a company. A couple of months after I finished my second season, I started this journey. When I returned to work for my third season I went back 45 pounds lighter. Since our season is only 3 months long each year (its for the state Revenue Department) the turn over is high for the seasonal staff. About half the people I work with are new so they don't know me from before. The regulars didn't get to know me well enough to really remember how much bigger I was the previous two seasons. But the one thing that I noticed is how much nicer everyone was to me this season. The previous two seasons they were downright rude at times and I totally accepted it. Once I realized this it made me reflect back on my life. It was an eyeopener to see how cruel people can be to overweight people. I've had co-workers in the past tell me that they were surprised at how quick I caught on because they thought all fat people were lazy. So far I'm down 62 pounds and still have a good 50 to go but I notice in all aspects of my life I get better treatment now than prior to losing weight? Why? I'm still the same person I was before.15

I find the thread interesting and two, random observations spring to mind.
One is about my fellow weight losers.... Once you get down a ways they can look at you in disgust for talking about dieting when they conclude you don't have a weight problem so great as theirs.... I doubt anyone here would do that, but it happens in the wild.
Another random observation, when I get depressed I can't eat. This is not something society can believe about an overweight person, why they assume if I am depressed I must put a quart of ice cream on one hand and lard in the other and feed like a pig at the trough but no, I stop eating...
Society has some deeply held beliefs, that's for sure5 -
Fat Bias - As I call it. I know when I was heavier I was not a happy person. I do believe that much of the time people were picking up on that. Now that I am thinner I am happier. I smile more and am much more amicable.
No one likes to interact with a grumpy person. When I was unhappy with myself I was unhappy with everyone around me as well.7 -

I have lost 157 pounds and I find the little things amazing! Buying clothes at any shop, no water overflowing when I go into the bath lol! And of course theme parks, no longer scared of not fitting in the rides! It's also mad how different people treat you (they shouldn't, but they do) xx11

This is not "once you get down a ways." And it is not "disgust," it is jealousy. Most people do NOT have as big of a challenge losing weight as me. I mostly understand why and can't do anything about it, but I think you are misunderstanding. When I see someone lose 10 lbs. in a few months, I get jealous and frustrated that I can't do that. It isn't you, it is me.3 -
A woman wrote that the handicapped stall is not for overweight people. She needs to realize that being severely overweight/obese IS a handicap! I will use that stall as I please until I no longer need it.6

Oh my gosh, that weight loss is amazing! Congrats on your achievement! I'm sure it must have been hard at times, but look at all the awesome stuff you get to enjoy!
How long did it take you?0 -
That when your friends ask you what you are doing to lose weight and you tell them about your healthy eating and working out they look bored...and say they couldn't be bothered to do all that and yet they continue to bore you with moaning about their weight issues.3

How friendships change due to people being jealous. I have a very competative friend and she has slowingly growen apart from me due me losing 24lbs and me being smaller than her.3

I'm glad I'm not the only one! It's sad, isn't it? My husband asked me if I'd been talking about my weight loss a lot. Not at all! I don't bring it up. It's funny how 20 pounds lost can be negative.

I kinda miss being able to bulldoze my way through crowds.17

I've lost 15 lbs (still a lot more to go) but I feel already much more energetic!
My skin and hair also glow much more.
The one thing I don't like is freezing, but I own a lot of sweaters so that's not a big problem1 -
Sorry if this is TMI
My nipples seem out of place now that my moobs have shrunk and I have developed pectoral muscles.6 -

This is so true. I was 243 at my largest and now after years of hard work I am maintaining 182 lbs. That is what I weighed in 7th grade! It startles me to think how easy the choices I make now where so hard back then. If we had only known how simple saying no to something (like food) could be....

Its a fluke anytime something nice fits me at the thrift shop and I feel guilty and like a liar wearing a medium. I cry because I feel the same so clothing sizes must be changing. I am happy, but there is guilt there as well. I dont understand why, but at least ive recognised the emotion.
If I feel similarly at 18 pounds down I can't imagine how intense your emotions must be! ((hugs))
It's like it isn't even real. I'll put something on (an old jacket, for example) and when it fits I'm in absolute disbelief.
Remember that larger sized clothing is made to accommodate lots of different body shapes and is more forgiving than some smaller sized clothing. Larger sizes are made on purpose to hide lots of faults so it will continue to "fit" even when you lose. Try on smaller sizes at the thrift store. You will find lots of stuff that fits.
I bought a blouse for $2 the other day because I loved the print but I didn't bother to try it on because it obviously was too small. BUT when I got it home it fit exactly! It looks awesome and tiny. Amazing that it fit!

Improvements in skin has been a nice, unexpected side effect. I think lowering refIned carbs and sugar and upping water has really benefitted my face AND my waistline!2

I've lost around 50lbs so far and apart from my mother and a childhood friend, no one tells me anything, unless I mention it. Don't get me wrong I'm really happy that those two noticed. I wanted to jump in the air, but I thought I could get motivation and support from more people. I wonder why they are staying so silent, I mean 50lbs is noticeable, right? It would really help me, since I am not done yet.
The new problem I've encountered is with my underwear. They keep slipping and the leg holes are way too big lol. I need a new set lol
I've thought the same regarding people noticing my weight loss(besides close family). But somebody posted a good reason for that. Weight is a touchy thing and many may not want to embarrass us. Lol, with that said I know that I want people today ,"you've lost weight", and I'm only down 25lbs. Oh well, you know how hard you've worked for this. You rock!!
Thank you I've recently have been getting more support and it feels great. 25lbs, that's awesome!1 -
Bump so I can keep up with it0

Was 260 lbs about a year ago..checked in at 179 today. The wierdest part was that when I ran into an old friend the other day, they didn't even recognize me? I mean I was face to face with them and they didn't recognize me. My wife has been super supportive
Oh.. And I love clothes shopping now because not so embarrassed when I buy clothes...and I love that feeling of getting in my warm car on a summers day. I freeze all the time.7
