Apparently I've lost my mind. I'm seriously thinking of doing the Labor Day Road Race (Macon, Georgia) as a 10K, rather than the 5K I've done for the last several years....
@9voice9, looking at your mileage this month, I don't think you'll have any problem completing a 10K. Go for it!!
@ccohoon4, welcome!!

@JimCrackinDandy - very true about the shoes. I just bought new trail shoes (Brooks puregirt) and am loving them. I now want to try the street shoe version! Except I just bought a new pair of Pearl Izumi M3s last weekend as well. Guess the new brooks will need to wait a few months. Ah - I love shoes! All shoes - running and otherwise!
@mwyvr - I love all your Vancouver pictures. You live in one of my favorite cities (outside of California ). I will need to watch that video. I run on Tuesdays with a couple of ultra guys and seriously admire their grit.
@honuNui - Lily looks sweet! Is she a permanent member of the family now then?0 -

I was sidelined with injuries this month, but I am hoping this will continue in August, and it will help me stay accountable to a SLOW building of a running base. My running buddy just can't run less than six, and needless to say, the last thing I need now is too much, too fast. I'm grateful she is willing to dabble in biking and/or swimming until I'm back in the saddle! Congrats to all those warriors out there, keep it up!0
-
I'd like to join the August run challenge whenever it becomes available.0

I am back from San Francisco and did not keep up with all the goings on here - we were just too busy. I am going to read through and see what you all have been up to though for the last week.
We made it through the San Francisco 1st Half!! It was awesome weather - around 58, cloudy and drizzly almost the entire way. The hills (multiple) at the end were really brutal. 1 very long and steep downhill coming off the cliffs above the ocean and then 3 steep hills in the last 1.5 miles going into the finish! Since this was my daughter's first half I ran it all the way, slowly wit,h her. She was so afraid she wouldn't finish or wouldn't finish in time and worried about holding me back. I have to say it was hard not to run faster but it was awesome running it with her and I wouldn't have missed the opportunity. I stopped a few times to take pictures along the way and then ran to catch up to her. She still can't believe she finished it! We did immediately start trying to figure out how we could fit in running the 2nd Half next year into her schedule. She will be studying for her board exams but I hope we can fit it in. There is a special challenge medal if you complete them in back to back years.
One of the Harley volunteers offered to take our picture on the approach to the Golden Gate bridge. We had just completed her first goal - getting to the bridge.
Heading back across the bridge.

Rest day for me today0 -
7/1 - 1.75mi Today was going to be a rest day because my quads are tight and sore but I did it. It was slow and I went on a sandy path instead of pavement to see if it helped and I do feel a little better.
7/3 - 3.1mi Did my usual hilly path thru the park. Waited until evening to go but it was nice. Completed the first of 2 virtual 5k's. Now I have the rest of the month to improve my time LOL.
7/6. - 1.6mi Went for a birthday run with my son, which, While I love spending time with him I hate running with him because i am to much slower than him and he always wants to walk LOL.
7/7. - 3.1 mi Got up at 4:30am to get a run in before work and make up for yesterday. Think I will skip yoga today, I am sure I will pay for it later this week.
7/10 - 1.85mi Couldn't get my butt out of bed this morning and I paid for it. Very humid, slow run on a hilly trail. I knew I couldn't do the 3 miles I had planned so I worked on powering uphill and maintaining the faster pace after the downhills on the hilly trail I picked.
7/15- 3 miles Started off badly by forgetting my watch and decided not to turn around and get it. Was also still stiff and sore for my fitness test on Monday. All the strength stuff was "to failure ". But I am glad I went, I saw a doe and fawn and another doe farther down the path. It started out cool and drizzly but stopped halfway thru and ended with nice temperature
7/17 - 1.6mi Started off in the rain which was nice but after a half mile I started getting a headache which kept getting worse. I threw in a few walk breaks to see if it would help but gave up early. I will try again Sunday.
7/19 - 3.0 mi Crazy hot and humid and it made my RAD act up worse then it has all summer. Could not get my lungs to clear out and of course forgot my inhaler because I have not needed it yet. So more walking then running but still I was moving.
7/21 - 2.0 Late posting this, went for a run during lunch and used the dreadmill to see if it made a difference in how I felt when I ran and of course it was much better. No humidity and air conditioner apparently = happy lungs. Only had time for 2 miles because my new boss was on site and I didn't want to disappear for to long but felt like I could have gone 2 more which is a nice change instead of dying in the second mile and barely finishing the third LOL.
7/24 - 2.5 mi Did my usual double loop of the park today and saw 2 wild turkeys on the path. Neeko was very good and locked in them but didn't move or bark which was nice. Had an upset stomach today which is a first for me but also have been under a lot of stress with a reorganization at work and getting JJ ready for an elite goalie camp this weekend so I am treating it as a one off and not worrying about it.
7/26 - 3mi. Used the treadmill in my living room unfortunately air conditioner is broken so it got very warm very fast. Was supposed to do 4 miles but ran out of time before I had to take JJ to camp. Bad planning on my part.
7/28 - 3.1mi Used the treadmill at the gym at work today.90 degrees plus humidity is way to hot to be outside for me.
29.6 done .4 to go

lewissheldon125 wrote: »hi all,
Sorry to hijack the post as strictly speaking i haven't set a goal for July so am not part of this but I really want to start running a bit more seriously and wondered if any of you experienced guys/gals have any tips on how to start out, what kind of distances, number of times a week and tips for success
At present I can manage 5k and do this twice a week on a treadmill which I realise is easier than running outside, would like to build up from that. Is it just as easy as doing more than twice a week? Or should I be trying to mix it up i.e try for 10k one day and then 5k another?
I don't feel burn muscle wise when running its more of a out of breath feeling that makes me slow down so I am guessing (and it is a guess as i am no expert) that I lack cardio fitness rather than muscle strength
Anyway any tips and advice from those more clued up than myself would be well received.
Cheers all
I did forget to say one thing - get off the treadmill :-) You'd be surprised at how much more you'll run and love to run when you are outdoors. 3 miles on the treadmill is like death to me.

7/27 3.5 at 10:55 on the treadmill, since it was really muggy/rainy this am!
7/28 3.5 at 11:11 on the treadmill (and a butt-kicking strength training day, but not *all* legs, lol!)

Hey everyone, the ticker seems to be working!
@HonuNui Sorry to hear that! Hardly anyone has died there! ;-)
@lewissheldon125 Hello and welcome to the group.
@ccohoon4 Welcome to you too! Just look for the new August thread in the next few days.
@autumnblade75 I've been running mostly in Merrell Bare Access Street and BA Trails for the last month-ish - 95km and 143km on each, respectively. I like them both very much, quite a change from my more motion-control Nike and Saucony and Ascics I've spent more time in, but I'm not having any issues whatsoever. Sock-less running is terrific, I can wade through streams with no cares, and always do! Helps keep the smell down too LOL. Really digging the more spacious toe box, I'll never go back to cramped again.
On today's run I met one of my inspirations, someone I've noticed and watched for quite a few years. This spry gentle man is now 78 years old and I've long seen him all over town walking -- fast -- sometimes sprinting up our hill and coasting down the other side. He always has a big smile on his face and a "good morning" for us.
His name is Joe, I learned today, and I also learned that I'd not seen him as much recently not because he is doing poorly but because he is walking even more! He's simply been mixing up his route to keep things interesting.
His formula for useful longevity? He eats well. He walks 90 minutes every morning rain or shine and returns home to do a little strength work and finish up with a proper stretch. Thanks to these simple and easy measures his balance is excellent, he is sharp as a tack, and still moves faster than most people of any age.
I'd never have guessed he was nearing 80. Joe is a real inspiration.+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Month to date: 267.53 km Goal: 200.00 km / 124 miles (133% completed) Stretch Goal: 242.00 km / 150 miles (110% completed) +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Tue Jul 28 15.15 km City + river path run, met "Joe" Mon Jul 27 07.95 km Trail run Sun Jul 26 ----- Rest Day Sat Jul 25 10.49 km Mountain trails Fri Jul 24 ----- Rest Day, not by choice! I believe I've ordered another pair of the street version - I mostly run on the treadmill, but I have a pair of the trail version as well - they've barely been used. Both are lovely and I prefer them to the Brooks Glycerin I picked up this Spring. I think there might be some benefit to occasionally running in traditional running shoes, but I kind of have to force myself... I might be a weirdo, because I still wear socks with them. Not that it stops me running through big puddles if it's raining (I specifically picked up the trail version to use at Warrior Dash!) and a nice drizzle is more likely to lure me out on the roads and away from the treadmill!

The local trails (they're nice trails for this area) finally opened the other day after all of the spring rains. Every other time they opened, it would rain again, closing them for even longer. So I took the chance to hit them in the new Hoka One One Challenger's I picked up a couple months back. The results: They felt great. I think I will have to take them back though. After just 9 miles on them the sole at the tip of the shoes is separating, on both shoes. I did not trip and fall (amazingly), but I did get my feet caught up on some various rocks, roots, squirrels and what I think might have been an ogre, but it disappeared before I could get a picture of it. It's kind of a shame. (About the shoes, not the ogre, screw that ogre). I may take the chance to try some of those invisible shoes all the kids keep talking about.

The good news is, I met my goal. The bad news is, my achilles pain is back. I am not happy. The last time this happened it took me out a week. I was so looking forward to the runs for the rest of the week because the temps were looking great. I'm still going to get up and out tomorrow morning and see how it feels.
Today was a tough trail run. Heat, Humidity & Hills wreaked havoc with my heart rate and I had to walk several short sections to keep my HR down. I wanted to do 6 but the weather (Heat Index of 94F), and my Achilles, made me shut it down early. On the plus side, it was a beautiful trail and I got to see a lot of wildlife, including three wild turkeys who paced me for a a short while. I tried to get their pictures, but they were faster than my thumb.

Hot run this afternoon - pretty much felt like my face was going to burn off. There definitely is a reason I always run before noon! Pretty unlikely I will make my goal but I will be close. Taking a week + off with my knee pretty much sealed it but I will be back to do it next month!
