Gym vs home

I am getting back on weight lost journey. Trying to decide if I want to get a gym membership. Do you guys workout in a gym or gone? Which do you prefer

i prefer to work at home and at the yoga studio where I work. come winter I might consider a gym
I just find the gym tedious and boring and stinky0 -
I have a good collection of tools at home (a mini gym in my basement with dumbells/bench/squat rack/treadmill/wall mounted flat screen for P90X3 and for movies during long runs) so I do most of my workouts at home or outside.
I try and get to the gym once or twice a week (I would just pay the drop in fee).
I like the gym atmosphere, and the machines I don't have at home.
Some gyms have great classes and if you get your motivation from working out in groups, the gym may be your best bet.
I like variety so I do both.
Either way, come up with a plan, schedule your workouts and put them in a calendar and try and do things you enjoy. Working our shouldn't feel like work:)0 -
I personally enjoy both gym and home. I feel like I work more/harder at a gym, as there's more tools available there. But I also have the option of workout videos if I need something quick or just having an off/anti-social day.0

I prefer home. My travel time is 1 minute and I have my own personal shower. I'm looking to buy a full cage for safety, as I'm lifting too much to be safely spotted otherwise.0

I am extremely introverted so I prefer home. Plus, no commute, I know the equipment I need is available, I can lift in bare feet, get cheered on by my dog (she loves when I lift for some reason) and can blare whatever music I like.0

I so agree with the last part. Whether you work out at home or gym do a schedule. That's one of many steps towards the right direction.
For my financial situation, working out at home is the only option. I mix it up a lot so I don't get bored. If you decide to do the gym route try to find one that you feel comfortable in and you are actually going to use. Good luck!0 -

I prefer the gym because I tend to be more motivated there. If I work out at home I get more distracted and I'm more likely to stop earlier. I don't even like running near my apartment for that reason. If I go somewhere else I'll go a bit harder because I'm already there.0

I prefer the gym, it is close by and I work much harder there with no distractions.
It is new, well air conditioned, and has a good selection of classes and equipment0 -
I prefer home for several reason.
1. I am something of a germophobe
2. I like being outside
3. The nearest gym is far away
4. I prefer to workout alone
5. I get bored frequently with exercise and change my routine0 -
Gym. I'm a spoiled rotten princess who has everything she could ever need or want at the gym.0

Home. I just prefer exercising on my own in general. Plus with two young children it's much easier to squeeze in some exercise around them.0

3 places to work out for me. I use the weight room at work over lunch. If by chance there's a noon meeting (hate those people that schedule those), then, depending on what I need to do I'll either work out at home or head to the commercial gym that my wife and I belong to. I like them all.0

I do both, I do cardio at the gym and bodyweight strength training at home. You have to really see what works for you. Since I am easily distracted working out at home for long periods would not work for me.0

I prefer home. I hate public gyms. Cutting out travel time helps me, and I can use my home gym whenever I want. I'm lucky enough to have a lot of equipment at home - but I can't imagine having to go to a gym, I would totally skip workout constantly. The only thing I don't do at home is long runs or when I run the stairs at the high school stadium.0

I lift weights at the gym because I do not have nor do I have room for the equipment I would need/want.
beyond that, I mostly ride my bike (around 80 miles per week) and cross-train with a 5K or some interval runs once per week.

Both. I have equipment at home, but also try to hit the gym to do the lifts that I don't have the equipment for at home (requiring a cable machine)0

Both. My gym has a far better selection of weight training equipment than I'd ever have room for at home, as well as a pretty decent yoga instructor. But most of my cardio work (bike, run, ski, etc.) is done outside of the gym.0

Gym, I work harder and like the social aspect. Plus I never get bored! I do work out at home if I can't make it to gym - HIIT, yoga, kettlebells and bodyweight ciruits.0

Home.
No excuses. No driving. No waiting. No distractions.
I can admire my abs and flexing abilities in my mirrors while singing Anaconda in my underwear without anyone watching.0 -
Both.
I used to do all my working out at home, using kettlebells and body weight. But then I wanted heavier weights/different exercises so I either needed to buy more equipment (and deal with setting it up in a way so as to not damage the floor if I drop it), or join the gym. I did the latter.
I still do my yoga at home and do running and circuit training just around the neighbourhood, but my weight training happens at the gym.
I'm fortunate that the gym is only a 4 minute jog/7 minute walk away, though, so I do a mobility warm-up at home and jog down to the gym, then I'm warm and ready to go when I get there. At the end of my workout, I walk home (too tired for even the short jog, generally) and stretch and shower at home.0 -
Hi, I'm only a month in on my journey, and about 1 week in on regular exercise. I'm an intern for a wonderful company that has a gym and a personal trainer for their employees. I finally strummed up enough courage to go talk to her.... As it turns out she went to my highschool. I have shame for being out of shape, but I'm determined. So we talked and worked out a plan. Turns out she is all for workouts that don't include machines! This makes it awesome! I have been trying to go in an hour early to do 30min but this weeks been hectic, so one day I was too late to do the workout and did the rest at home. She also wrote me up some exercises to do at home over the weekend. I like to to the gym, but home is so much easier! I picked up some dumbbells that were on sale and I think I might stick to the home routine.0

Gym. 110%. It's my escape. They have everything I need that I can't afford to have at home (space wise and money wise) Weights, barbells, machines, etc. It holds me accountable, gives me a place to be my refuge. I tried working out at home and it was a flop for me. Videos and body weight exercises weren't cutting it and it was easy to bail. If I have a place to be, I'm there. Mentally the gym is better for me. I get motivated watching other people, I learn from watching them, I'm pushed to be better around other people. I absolutely love my gym.0

I have to add that I have two kids and I cannot work out at home without so many stops and starts. I get distracted. I don't push myself as hard, it's easier to cheat. I also need to compartmentalize things. Home represents rest and comfort and neither of those things belong in a workout!!0

I work out at home. I work from home so I really can't leave. No benefit anyway for me going to the gym. The goal for me when I go out is to see other people and get stuff done. Gym is -other people0

One thing I want to say to encourage you is that most people at the gym are welcoming and willing to help people. They are there for the purpose of helping themselves so they understand you are too. You are beautiful and if anyone makes you feel unwelcome that's their problem. If you rather work out at home, do it but don't let fear hold you back from going to a gym if that's what you want to do.0 -
I started at home ( too scared to try anywhere else), then expanded to the pool, then a few classes, then the weight room. Social butterfly now.
I back onto the local rec centre's playing fields and the jogging track goes past my back gate, so it is an easy 5 min across the fields to the centre.
I also qualify for a seniors pass - 6m for $180, that gets me all the pool and gym time I could ever need, as well as aqua fit, and various strength, circuit, and cardio classes.
I should be in incredible shape with all that is so readily available, but I find anything over 60-90 min a day is overkill for my body, and I burn out.
Edited to add- I find if I have paid for it I will be much more diligent than at home. I can let myself get distracted too easily.

I worked out at home for many years, loved it. Have a nice elliptical trainer and some free weights...that is all I need.
recently joined a gym and love it. Only joined because my daughter wanted a membership and the family rate was too good to pass on.
