25777 steps today, about 12 miles. A lot of them in this solemn but glorious place, Arlington National Cemetary. Had a great first day in WA DC... It is great to be back!n0nvrkqj5sbc.jpeg

DC is definitely on my "return to" list. I only had one day there a few years ago and that certainly isn't enough. I had to pass up too many places for the sake of time (Arlington National, the Pentagon, the White House, the baseball and football stadiums, way too many museums, etc). It was also like 95 friggen degrees out that day and humid.
Of course, that "return to" list just gets bigger every year.

Oh I have those places too! We've done well with DC considering my husband & I are CA natives. I'm pretty much familiar with all the 'big' sights & am using this week to burrow in to the offbeat & obscure. Arlington was special yesterday; I was just walking from my husband's apartment in Arlington to his office near the mall (he's on a four month NPS assignment) but after I hopped one of the stone walls I found myself in the center of the staging for an Air Force brig gen's funeral. They said I could stay & watch from the sidelines. It all came together with a large band, a color guard, the flag draped coffin on an open carriage drawn by a beautiful team of 6 draft horses, and his entire funeral party walking behind... Very somber and moving.

    9% incline
    Average speed 3.3 MPH
    Max Speed 5.5 mph
    2.36 miles
    41 minutes
My husband asks why my numbers are low like that. It's because I warm up then cool down. Not just jump on, hit it hard then jump off.

Today I walked 30384 steps in WA DC, about 14.3 miles. I was chasing down art today: went to a few government agencies to see some large permanent installations, spent a lot of time in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Portrait Gallery, the National Gallery, their sculpture garden and even scooted into the Freer at the very end of the day to see Whistlers Peacock Room in natural light. They only open it up like that once a month, on the third Thursday, and today was the day! It was a great day. The picture I'm including is a scientifically accurate coral reef entirely hand built out of clay from the lobby of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Gorgeous sculpture!cxei5q3iuq7l.jpeg

Sounds like an awesome day! I know that when I return to D.C., my first stop is going to be the Hirshorn Museum. I was "there" but only outside by the fountain.

Did a nice easy 9.1 miles on this sunny, but breezy, fall day. The picture is a bit misleading. It makes it look like there are plenty of leaves on the trees yet. Since yesterday, I think we've had a 50% leaf drop. My heart sank a little today when I left my apartment and noticed just how bare the trees were getting. Where did the summer go?

Yeah, I reluctantly triaged the Hirschorn today to make to the Freer... I may get another chance this trip. That is a wonderful shot of the lane! I love it. Great walking.

I missed posting yesterday! My husband took a day off from this work detail, so we visited Ford's Theater in the morning and Dumbarton Oaks in the afternoon. We walked from the Mall through Foggy Bottom & Georgetown, finally crossing the bridge to Rosslyn to get back on the metro. 27272 steps; 12.9 miles. The gardens at Dumbarton were amazing. Here is a picture of the cutting borders.
