Heather-you're such a great testimonial to all of us. Your before and after picture is amazing! You definitely do not look wrinkly in your after picture. You actually look a lot younger. I am grateful that you are part of this group you inspire me with your descriptions of your dinners. I think I eat healthier because of you.
Sharon - dislocated ribs! 000W! I hope your DH is not in much pain. Let us know how he does.
I am going to do my Stronglifts 5X5 then finish up with a nice walk.

I took 10 pair of jeans and slacks, one skirt, and a pair of shorts, to get them altered. The tailor said he would start working on them because I had told him that I had loot nearly 30lbs and they were all too big for me. It is far less expensive (although expensive enough) to have them altered than to have to go out to shop for them. I'm beginning to get into my jeans that are 12's and a couple that have some stretch to them a 10. I'm thrilled beyond belief.0

My FIL was not deemed "eligible" for hospice outside the home as he was "simply" dying of old age and not a debilitating illness. She had been advised to no longer feed (give water/ice chips but no solid foods unless patient requests or indicates such) nor administer medications as he was at end-of-life. It sounds horrible but in reality it was for the best as he did pass on once he was allowed to let his body/organs do what was expected and that is shut down. She was able to see him upon arriving home and hold and kiss him and tell him he was loved. The nurses were doing their midnight rounds and had just checked on him. They turned their backs to him to see to the next bed when they heard a gasp and he had passed on at 12:05 very peacefully.

Good morning everyone. I'm not feeling too great this morning. The headache I've had for a few days has gotten worse. I feel queasy and my head and jaws are aching. Even my hair hurts. If I don't feel better soon I'm going home and back to bed. I went to the store early and got the kids some hand sanitizer to use at school. There is a small menningitis outbreak at the middle school, so they are taking extra precautions. They have shut off the water fountains and all the kids are to bring bottled water, and wash their hands all through the day, and if they have a cough or runny nose at all they are to stay home. My son had encephalitis when he was 18 (which is very similar to menningitis) and it was awful. I wouldn't wish it on anybody.
When I got to the apartment my son told me that I didn't look good yesterday when I brought them home and that I don't look any better this morning. Gee thanks. So, he said HE will pick up his own children this afternoon so I don't have to. That's nice. Hubby has already offered to take them to gymnastics tonight. I try not to take tylenol if I don't have to, and yesterday I did. Today I will again.
I'm going to go throw some pots, as that usually has a relaxing effect on me. If that doesn't work I'm going home.

Mary - tonight we are having lamb, spinach, pea and tomato curry. Rice with it for DH. I put a couple of new potatoes in it for DH, but I will have half a small one. Raita (Yoghourt and cucumber sauce) with it. I am estimating 340 calories for me. :bigsmile:
DH is making apple and wild blackberries for dessert with homemade yoghourt. 130 cals.
I do like feeling fitter through exercise and I know it is good for my health, but my main reason is so I can EAT! :laugh:

Sylvia, my son also had encephalitis. He was 8. It was a complication from having the chicken pox! Two of my boys had trouble developing immunity to the chicken pox virus. This was the third time this one got it, and my youngest was still getting it every time he was exposed when he left home! I lost count of how many times after 8. Encephalitis was also what caused my cousin's mental retardation. He was only 2 when he got encephalitis. He had severe brain damage from it, with ten or more seizures AN HOUR until he was 10 and had a partial lobotomy. His left frontal lobe was removed to quiet the seizures. He functioned at about a 12 year old level all his life, but also had little motivation and no planning or reasoning skills. So encephalitis is really scary!0

It makes it easier for us to respond to you. You have started great just by getting here. Now start to log everything you eat and drink so you can see where you are. Most of us find that it helps to plan ahead and even log ahead for our day. Come often and good luck.
Barbie, thanks for your encouragement. You know you are the reason I even decided to start it. Right now it is the best exercise I get each week. I can feel my stamina increasing as well as my skill. My DH said he thought I’d have no problem with it because I have a good sense of timing and love to dance. The steps aren’t usually the problem but my memory of what comes next. LOL Not sure this is going to increase my attention.
Mary, the line dancing class is 1 ½ hours and I go an hour early for the novice session. I still don’t have the stamina to make it for 2 ½ hours but getting better each week. Thanks for your encouragement.
MicheleNC, ya’ll are getting super serious about closing the pool. Gosh when we had one I used to at least leave out a couple of chairs until I knew there was no chance of another warm day. **I’m shedding a tear for you** I hope your plantar wart only feels like it’s not all gone. Years ago I had a couple and had a terrible time getting rid of them.
Janetr, so sorry about you getting sick. At least you know the cause. Congrats on selling the truck. So now you only have one vehicle? My DH keeps saying we don’t need two now that we are both retired and put so few miles on them. I might spend days in a row where I don’t leave the house, but the thought of being without a car when I do want it is just not something I want to do. I told him he can sell his and buy some junker as long as it runs. LOL I don’t’ think we will do anything but keep the two that we have. They are both paid for and should last us as long as we can drive.

Joyce, I hate that your vacation planning is on hold with Charlie’s health situation. I hope that changes in the future! DH and I haven’t been on one in 3 or 4 years mainly because of our dogs. And also because he says there’s not really any place he wants to go. At least he doesn’t mind me traveling with friends and I do love my cruises.
Katla, I have to ask…did your DH have annual visits to the vet when he was a teen? That just made me laugh, but how lucky that he was diagnosed when he was.
Sharon, I hope things improve at work. It sounds like you always have to give the managers a lot of help. Sending good thoughts for DH and his health issues. I’m rooting for you to do more walking tomorrow.
Heather, even in the heavy picture, you look so young and no double chin. Wow. I love the new picture and it really shows off that beautiful dress! You both look fantastic!!!
Lisa, I’m glad you are getting things going at the warehouse. I’m sure there will end up being a number of annoying but hopefully minor issues that need attention. So far, the good news is that your DH can take care of them. My DH is not Mr. Handyman around the house even though he tries. Lol
Gloria, the one good thing (maybe) is when I gain weight fast I can usually lose it fast. Next time come talk to us before 3 days has gone by. We are here for you. Was there a particular upset that caused the eating or just the craving? Remember this journey is one meal at a time and one day at a time. You can do this!!!
Estell, welcome. You have come to the right place for support and information. None or very few of us changed everything overnight. This is a journey and we learn and improve as time goes on. Just start with baby steps and move forward to bigger steps. Log everything you eat and drink and see where you can make small improvements. I was surprised to find the things I can actually live without, once I started cutting them from my diet. We are with you so come often and join right in.
Cheri, I’m sorry for your loss and glad you are back with us. It’s nice that you have been able to talk with your children about your wishes.
Frances, welcome. Please tell us a little about yourself to help us get to know you. Why do you think you’ve done something wrong? I hope you don’t think you will lose 4 pounds every week? That would not be healthy. Normally when we first start we lose some water weight. If you are doing everything right, you will lose. This thing really works. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t lose for a period of time. Most of us will have weeks of losing and then periods of no loss. Just keep doing the right things and you will be successful.
Pip, you are the only one I know that will work out as long as your DH is running in an event. I swear you are 20 and not whatever age you say you are. You go girl!!

Okay, most of you know that I admit that I have “Immediate Memory Loss” (per my DD) so I can’t remember who was talking about adding a can of pumpkin to something (a cake mix, maybe?) . So I have the can of pumpkin now and don’t know what to do with it?? Duh Please refresh my memory. Thanks.

Sylvia - A headache in the back of your head is a symptom of meningitis. If there is an outbreak at your DGK's school then I would definitely suggest that you go to the doctor immediately. My sister had meningitis the year and a half ago and could have died from it. It is very serious.

Margaret - those are the identical symptoms I get with a 'migraine' headache. If you have never had one before, you feel like you're dying - or sometimes you might wish you had something to make you go to sleep. IF I wake up to one, I know it will NOT go away treating it with Tylenol or Ibuprofen (or the Max-Alt he has Rx'd to me) and I usually have to go to my MD for a shot that 'thankfully' does not 'kick in' for about 30 minutes . . . enough time for me to drive home; although I have had to call my DH to take me home. I'll take a Max-Alt first thing when I wake up, then a strong aspirin (such as Ibuprofen Migraine) and after 30 minute I will call his office and tell them I have had a headache since I woke up. I'll call him if I get one in the afternoon because usually they don't go away on their own or with my 'home' remedy. I hope you don't suffer from migraines - they are awful and can certainly screw up you plans for the day. The yogurt treats are good for getting "Cracker" at least close enough for me to grab her; I think she will get the idea soon. Right now we are working on 'stay'.
csofed - At least she got to be away from his situation occasionally. I know it is difficult to care for someone who is bedridden. My BF's husband had cancer and they sent Hospice to their home; but, she still had to hire a full-time nurse to care for him during the day; then, she took over when she got home from work. Sometimes the nurse would stay longer or overnight if she was just too plain worn out to care for him. However, she had him in their bedroom (instead of another bedroom) so every time he gasps, it always woke her up. She was about to lose it before he finally passed away. Then came the 'fight' with his children. Also found out that he had had a life insurance policy that she was not named as the beneficiary, his 'ex' was. That really upset her. It wasn't like they were 'minors'.0 -

just spoke on the phone to my elderly freinds up at the cape.. Ruth turned 88 in august and has been in and out of nursing homes and hospitals for the past 5-6 yrs and poor Ray is battling lung cancer... sure wish I was closer..

Frances from Toronto, we are happy that you are here...just keep coming back....you are doing good things....weight loss is not linear so sometimes when you have perfect eating and exercise, there's no weight loss and then when you least expect it, the numbers go down. Just keep on doing the things that you know are good for you and seek every opportunity to be active.

Janetr, one of my local friends gets horribly ill from pain meds and had a terrible time after she was hit by a car while riding her bike....I wish you relief from your pain and sickness
gloworm, it took me until I was 62 to finally get the formula that works for this weight loss journey....before that it was not uncommon for me to eat mass quantities of food for no good reason....just pick yourself up and get going again
Katla, you will be so happy with your new windows that the memory of the cold and inconvenience will disappear from your memory very quickly
Heather, I know your story and still I loved hearing it again and seeing the pictures of before and now....you have given hope and encouragement to so many women on this thread especially those who want to look awesome and still enjoy fancy food.
Lisa, I have enjoyed reading the restaurant saga but am happy that the "adventure" is over and you can get back to more peaceful life......the pain I have in my legs doesn't seem to be joint pain or muscle so I have no idea what the doctor will say.
Cheri, thank you for sharing the story of your MIL and FIL....what a strain for everyone....congrats on not losing sight of the care of your own health.

DJ, I don't know how your line dance instructor teaches, but mine cues the steps and I repeat the cues she teaches so I have words to help me along with the muscle memory of what my feet are doing....so as I'm dancing, I'm saying to myself "step lock step brush, step lock step brush........" all the way through the dance.
My line dance teacher and her husband went on a trip to celebrate their anniversary so she cancelled today's class. I can fill in for her on the less challenging Thursday class but the Wednesday class is too much for me. I miss dancing but am finding ways to enjoy the unexpected extra time.

katla - how interesting that the veterinarian diagnosed your hubby's diabetes. Well, a lot of the symptoms (if not all) are the same as in animals and humans.
Sharon - I must have missed things (so sorry). How did dh dislocate his ribs and what kind of surgery will he be going for?
Heather - how wonderful that you didn't put on any weight! Yes, Heather is a great cook. Just wait till she posts some of her menus! You'll be drooling like I usually do.
Lisa - I'm with all of you on needing a car. Even if I don't use it, it's nice to know that I can. It just about killed me when I couldn't drive. Fortunately, that's behind me. We have three vehicles. Well, Vince's Genesis is his baby. Heaven forbid I breathe on it the wrong way!!! If he has an oil change scheduled and it's raining that day, he reschedules the oil change. No kidding. I will drive the Outlook if needed. I do prefer my Mazda which is smaller, but I'll trade the ability to drive where I want when I want in a larger vehicle. That was so nice of the crew chief to thank you.
Gloria - I don't like going from summer to fall, but I feel for you
Estelle - welcome. I've found that if I have something sour (like vingegar on my salad or lemon in my water) that heps to curb the sweet cravings. Can't say that I've ever had a salt craving so can't help you there, but I'm sure someone on here can.
Cheri - so sorry for your loss.
Frances - welcome! Sometimes it just takes our bodies a while to get caught up. Don't give up, that's so very important

DJ - there's a recipe from Hungry Girl where you tae a box of devils food cake mix, mix a can of pumpkin, put it in a 9 x 13 pan and bake at 400 for 18-20 minutes. Even Vince couldn't taste the pumpkin! His comment was that the "brownies" were on the cake-y side. Well, that's because of the cake mix -- but I didn't tell him that part.

I think my MIL would have been better off with my FIL in the other bedroom but she would have nothing to do with that. She was literally watching and listening to him breath all night. Anytime he would make a whisper she was out of bed. She had home health care workers all day in the beginning. Then it was cut down to 11-7 as he was no longer in need of immediate care (breakfast and wash-up) first thing in the morning. Then it was cut down to 1-4 as his care was simply the CNA washing and checking vitals. Finances were beginning to dwindle which was also a decision in the reduced home health aid hours. During this time she was attending to her own health issues which she has developed over the year. She had a heart scare and had a stent put in, she had surgery for carpal tunnel as her left arm was going numb and she was diagnosed with spinal stenosis. She is currently going to be on her own in her home but we think her daughter and SIL will be moving in with her and assist with her care as she continues to age.
Fortunately there should be no problems with the estate.....

I had a terrible sweet tooth also and was told by a nutritional counselor to cut the sugar grams to less than 50/day and only get those 50 grams from fruit. Artificial sweetner was also discouraged and I use only stevia. I was very skeptical but followed the advice and it worked at reducing my cravings. I'm not a salt lover so unfortunately I can't help you with that.

Rosie So Cal – Thanks! DH is still in denial about having Diabetes, and is not planning on treating it at all. He quit pop and added 1-3 pieces of fruit per day. Thinking back a few weeks, I can recognize a few things that I missed, but he won’t admit to anything yet. I will be taking a specific diabetes awareness and cooking class, so I can be supportive without him noticing too much. And every time he takes a baby step in the right direction I will do my best to encourage him. His role models (both parents) treated their diabetes the same, so I can’t expect much different. // I do a lot of driving around of my DS, too. He is a sophomore this year, and is in basketball, baseball, and bowling (basketball and bowling are year-round, but he is not on any indoor baseball leagues), and has a weekend job. He won’t be allowed to start Driver’s Ed until February at the earliest.
Beth – Thanks! I can only do so much for an adult. I suppose I will eventually need to give him his injections, but I certainly don’t expect him to change anytime soon. // I’m glad you had your pity party, and I’m extra glad it has ended. Hugs !

DJ – Thanks ! At this early stage, I am hoping that the fruit will replace a tiny bit of the complex carbs he eats. Eating an orange in the car at 4:00am on his way to work is better than the snickers or cinnamon rolls he usually eats. So although it is not a perfect swap, it is heading in the right direction. I tried to calmly explain what is happening in his body, and what to expect in the future, and he just doesn’t care. I plan to slowly introduce some vegetables, like peppers that he gets on his pizza, to his daily diet to see what happens. He said the only way he will eats carrots is in pot pie, so I will make a low-fat, low carb chicken pot pie this weekend some time. // Congrats on the too big pants ! // I add canned pumpkin to plenty of things. Spice cake, oatmeal, chili, cheesecake for DS, etc.
Barbie – open minded to trying new things. That is HUGE in this process. Thanks for the reminder. // Hugs and good thoughts as you find the source and recovery of your leg pain !
Michele – Thanks! While the “out of sight out of mind” is a great theory, it only goes so far. Last night he asked for honey ham, so I bought some. He complained that there is no white bread in the house. I told him he could make a wrap with one of my (whole wheat) soft tortillas. He put on his shoes and went to PigglyWiggly to buy a loaf of white bread. The only “win” I can get from that is he got off his duff instead of laying on the couch watching baseball all evening (and then the stupid Cubs lost anyway). // It is not uncommon for warts to return, either in the same place or anywhere else on the body. Plus, sometimes they have to be treated multiple times. I hope you get good results. Hugs !
Katla – Thanks! No, DH does not properly appreciate me, but I can tell in his weird way sometimes. I did tell him that I am taking the cooking class. I also told him that the side-effects of untreated diabetes is a long and painful way to die, and he just shrugged his shoulders, so we’ll see what comes of it.
Sharon – so sorry for your DH and his problem ribs, and his need for a tune-up. I hope all goes well. Hugs ! ! !

I agree about the meningitis symptoms. If you tip your head forward to stretch out the back of your neck and the pain makes you scream, you need to get to a Hospital ASAP. I’ve only had a few migraines, and they are definitely headaches, not so much my neck and upper back/shoulders.
Sorry to everyone from Canada about the Blue Jays. I commiserate, as I am a long-time Cubs fan. I can’t believe I gave up sleep last night for them to lose again. Did they learn nothing from “Back to the Future 2” ???

Thanks, I think today I'm about back to normal, was a bit nauseous this morning, but it didn't last long. Jack is going to buy a smaller verhicle he's talking about a Jeep or Toyota, something we can pull behind the motor home. Right now with as much as we both run around, I don't think we can get by with only one vehicle.

This is the poem I read at the party. It is very easy to Google. I think it is the best description of a partnership that I have ever read. It made a few people cry. It was a tribute to my wonderful husband.
All of you deserve a supportive partnership. Life is too short to put up with anything else.
Still haven't exchanged on my rental. Still more stupid questions. We have to take out an indemnity on a couple of things. Costs me. :sad: :sad: :sad:

Mary, my headache is toward the front, behind the eyes mostly. I don't have a fever or cough, so I don't think it's menningitis. I do have an odd soreness in my jaws though. I wondered about it being heart related, but I really don't think so. Now that I've been throwing pots for a couple of hours, it feels a little better. Pottery is truly a great stress reliever. I just noticed that my bottle of tylenol expired 3 years ago. Hmmm. That can't be good.
Miriam, my son was 18 when he got it. He was in a coma for about a week. His temp was 109 at one point. They didn't expect him to survive. They even sent in a chaplain to give last rites. I threw a hissy fit over that. I had finally gone home to try to get a little rest and they called me in the middle of the night saying he had awakened and ripped out all his tubes and tried to leave the hospital. He didn't know where he was or why. Afterward, his mind didn't work quite as well as it did before, but they didn't actually call it brain damage. His short term memory was completely gone for a while, but it came back. It was terrifying. I've often wondered if some of the problems in his life since have been related to it. Or more likely all the drugs he took. His current lung problem is not related directly, but some of the boneheaded decisions he's made about it may well be.
All this talk about VW's makes me think of mine. My first car was a 1968 VW Automatic Stickshift, red with black interior. Bought in 1973 for $900. I loved that little car. I drove it into the ground, poor thing. A friend finally bought it from me to make a dune buggy. I remember once, right after I got it, I heard a sudden banging coming from the left rear wheel. It was pretty loud. I was just sure I had broken it somehow. I parked it, walked home, and waited till my dad got home. He towed it to the house. When he took off the hub cap he discovered a lug nut bouncing around inside it. I tooled all over southern California in that thing, and later all around Denver.
Well, back to work I go!

Gloria: I hope you're able to get things under control. I did most of my calorie control using foods I already loved and portion control. I would calculate the calories per cup or pound and give myself a portion that fit inside my calorie allowance. Then I'd fill up with freebies like celery and herb tea. Estell: Welcome to a great group. I have one salt tip. Don't salt food while you're cooking except for baked goods. Add a just little when you eat. The overall salt load will probably drop to healthier levels quickly. You really need to avoid the fast food places if you need to limit salt. :noway:
Cheri: I'm sorry for the loss of your father-in-law, and pleased to hear how well the family pulled together to support one another.
Frances from Toronto: Welcome to a great group. In my own loss journey, I had a pattern of losses and plateaus, even when I did everything the way I was supposed to and counted every calorie. Many of us had similar experiences & were often vying for Plateau Princess. I think it is normal. You are doing everything right but need to be patient with your body and the process. For this to work long term, it needs to become your new lifestyle. :flowerforyou:

DJ: There were always many animals at DH's house when he was growing up, and they lived in a small town where they got to know the vet very well. DH's medical doctor told him that he had leukemia. He had to take the dog to his friend the vet, and told him about the situation. The vet said, "You don't have leukemia. You have diabetes." DH went to the hospital and they confirmed the diabetes diagnosis and got him started on insulin. His mother thought he was an addict because of the insulin. She was ashamed of him. :mad: Those were the bad old days. :noway:
Barbie: I'm getting excited about the windows and I think you're right. We will love them. I wonder how long it will be before we need to replace more windows. This is NOT cheap and I am a skinflint. :ohwell:
I missed yoga this morning because I got distracted doing other things until it was too late to go. I can still go this evening if I get organized. We will see. Today we are getting things moved away from the windows where the work will be done so that we don't have to worry about it. That task required me to take a couple of hundred pounds of books off of my bookshelf so that I can turn the shelf away from the window side, get it out of the way of the installers and protect it. Not all of the books will be going back onto the shelf when we put the room back together. :noway:

October Goals :
1. Log every bite and swallow.
2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week. Work on flexibility and back strength.
3. Have fun every day.
4. Drink at least three glasses of water daily, preferably more!
5. Eliminate alcohol.
6. Monitor sleep. Try to average 7 or more hours of sleep nightly.

Michele,Nobody ruined the DWTS results for me because I stayed away from MFP and the internet until I had seen the show late Tuesday afternoon. I can't expect everyone else to not talk about the show just because I wait so long to watch it. One Tuesday I met some friends for coffee before I had watched the show and asked them not to tell me the result....they didn't actually tell me the results but what they talked about gave me some clues
on the subject of cars, Jake and I are talking about the possibility of having just one car sometime soon. We've done it before and he's always been the one to decide that we need a second car.0 -

I'm 54 and have been using MyFitnessPal as motivation to lose some weight. I was diagnosed with arthritis in my knee and told that the best I could do right now is to exercise and lose weight. For every pound lost, 4 lbs of pressure is relieved. So in August of this year I made a commitment to lose 15 pounds - getting out of the "overweight" category and into the "normal" category on BMI. I have been trying to walk every day - getting between 3,000 and 5,000 steps - this is going from NOTHING. I have tried to stay within my daily calorie allotment. I have lost 9 lbs in 9 weeks. My knee feels much better.
I have been going to Physical Therapy for a neck/shoulder injury from a car accident. I have been in a lot of pain for a few weeks now.
I know I need to add some weightlifting to my exercise routine, but I am reluctant to start due to the pain I have been in. Plus I don't want my knee to start acting up again. I am discouraged, even though my weight loss is on track.
I was a gym rat just 6 years ago - in great physical condition (best of my life), but a bought of pneumonia that lasted 4 months and a torn meniscus in my knee took me away from the gym. A new relationship came along and I got "fat & happy" - my SO loves to eat. But as I get older and things start to deteriorate, I KNOW I have to recommit to fitness and health.
It is nice to have a community of support with people in my same phase of life.

We have always had just the one car and shared it. it works for us because we are retired. We save an enormous amount of money not having to support two vehicles. if I desperately need transport I can get a friend to pick me up, or I get a taxi. if I really needed to I would hire car for however long I needed it. Both of those solutions are a lot cheaper in this country than running two cars. Tax, depreciation, insurance, etc. etc. A fortune. A lot of my friends do run two cars.
When we first looked at this house I thought it was right out in the sticks and asked the agent if taxis came out this far!!!!! Actually we are really near civilisation! And a railway station. If you need one for work then that's important and necessary, but the occasional taxi is a lot cheaper than all the expense of keeping a car going on the off chance you might want to run to the shops. :noway:
