Americans! Thanksgiving!

Hello.

I'm over here in the UK, and as a family we like to do big celebration dinners, you know, Halloween, Easter, birthdays, Christmas, new year, Chinese new year, Diwali, basically anything we can have a food fest about.

One such thing we have never attempted before is a Thanksgiving dinner, and this year I wish to change that.

I've found plenty of menus online, but I'd love to here from some real life Americans as to what they eat, and how I can create a proper authentic Thanksgiving dinner.

Also, please tell me this is a proper authentic Thanksgiving staple..

YES to the above question re: sweet potato casserole. definitely a staple at my thanksgivings. Turkey obvs. Wine! cranberry sauce. out of a can. with the can imprint. gravy. apple pie a la mode. mashed potatoes (sweet or reg).

We always have collard greens and we never have rolls or mashed potatoes, just cornbread. We're not even from the south - CT!

And yes, stuffing - outside the bird.

In lieu of stuffing in the bird, we use apples, peeled and quartered.

I'm from the midwest originally so somewhat regional:
-Turkey, I usually just make the breast for the 2 of us. Roasted in the oven with spices like rosemary, sage
-Mashed potatoes and gravy (from the turkey)
-Stuffing, not actually stuffed into the turkey. Made separately. My mom used to put sausage in her recipe but can make without meat
-Corn, either on the cob or canned. Last year I made a delicious corn casserole recipe that was awesome, it was a Paula Deen recipe.
-Dinner rolls, the big soft kind. Great for soaking up the gravy, and can use to make little sandwiches with the leftovers
-Pie, pumpkin and pecan traditionally, but I like apple pie.
-I'm not a fan of cranberries but they're usually in there if you want traditional!

This sounds really good! I'm a cornbread stuffing person, but one of these days I need to give the bread stuffing a go.

Canadian Thanksgiving!!! We have a large extended family, so each couple brings one dish, usually.....

Turkey with Stuffing (Cubed bread, butter, stock, sage, thyme, onion, garlic)
Ham (preferably with brown sugar and horseradish)
Sweet Potatoes (no, we don't do marshmallows)
Mashed Potatoes
Acorn or Butternut Squash (butter and maple syrup)
Brussels Sprouts w Bacon
Peas and/or Carrots
GRAVY
Cranberry Sauce

Pumpkin Pie with Whipped Cream
Lemon Squares or Date Squares
(and other desserts, as people make them)

My family always goes with the basic Green Bean Casserole/Mashed Potatoes/ Homemade Mac & Cheese/ Turkey/ Pie combo! We're not very exciting!
