I find headlines used for the article and some of its presentation to be click-baity.
They aren't really comparing a vegetarian diet, but a diet based on the USDA dietary recommendations.
Taking a look at their actual indexes from the paper itself:
    lw6111tun6vq.png
It becomes immediately obvious that any time you replace meat or poultry with nuts, seeds, and soy, you're vastly reducing GHG and energy use (water use goes up). Eggs also trump the meat category. Vegetables and juice require more energy but less GHG than meat or poultry.
Oddly, they mention increasing seafood per recommendations by the USDA, except, eating seafood would is kind of against the term vegetarian isn't it? Kind of part of the proof of how the headlines and presentation of it is click-baiting and kind of taking shots at vegetarianism. You can see that seafood use can easily make a huge impact when used in place of meat or poultry, but actual vegetarianism would involve subbing meat and poultry with, again nuts, seeds, and soy.

A more honest summary of the findings would be that a more nutritious diet per the USDA's recommendations and current evidence could have an increased environmental cost compared to purely reducing calories in the standard American diet.

Ideally, from that graph I should switch to an added sugar snickers diet.

Where do I sign up for this?

Can anyone recommend a way of eating that won't make me hulk out on the forums?

    The peep cleanse.

You can't mention that here because people might laugh. And that's not OK.

No laughing! This is serious stuff!

What is everybody's issue with how everyone eats? Sheesh! I have learned in the last year of cutting grains and increasing proteins in my own diet (because I'm healthier via my bloodwork and feel better via me) that onlookers get so pissy about my choices. If you want to eat a vegetarian diet...do it. If you want to eat meat...do it. If you want to eat cockroaches...well I do think that's wierd. LOL Why do we all have to preach?

Now if you really want to get people inflamed, click on the link below the article that says 80%+ of vegetarians who give us meat return to eating meat. And......begin.

I'm a near vegetarian. I really don't like hunks of meat. I try to eat my 60 grams of protein every day and find that it's easier than most folks think.

I'm going to guess you didn't read the actual article because if you had, you'd probably have realized it's not a diss on what people eat.

80% of vegetarians give us meat? Wut? I'm becoming inflamed.

If that's the case, I've totally found a new appreciation for vegetarians.

I'd like to say I laughed pretty hard, but I read up thread 'no laughter'. So I chortled (18th century?!?) and had a moment of jocularity.

Excuse me ? Vegetarianism should be a start to transition into veganism. The milk industry is still cruel as well as egg industry.vegan is the best possible way to sustain the environment. With that said... The amount of water to produce a pound of beef could allow you to shower for 6 months. The amount of grain fed to animals for slaughter could end world hunger. I'd say vegetarianism does do a fair bit. Carnists have no excuses so seriously stop trying :D

The amount of job losses that would be caused by closing down the meat, dairy and fast food industry would send the economy into totall chaos and leave millions of people jobless and homeless but hell they're only humans who cares right?

Vegans are great at pointing out study after study, nitpicking research almost, fact of the matter is alot of the research on veganism/vegetarianism is long outdated, the China study has been debunked by at least 3 different experts in the nutrition field. If people want to live a vegan lifestyle great but stop treating others that choose not too like they're *kitten* on your shoe.

I've been a vegan for a long time... but even I don't get along with "those" types. It's a diverse world, people... let's remember that it takes all kinds and no one way is optimal for everyone, not even practical for everyone.

Ethical standpoints aside, I can't think of a single time that strict, fundamentalist dogma like that serves any positive purpose... unless we are talking about how effective the Spanish inquisition was, or something like that. (Not really positive, but can't deny the effectiveness there)

I generally intend it that way. I only ever bring it up in threads that are already discussing the topic if possible. Sure, it's an ethical and dietary choice... but it's my choice, for my reasons and has no impact on others in 99.9% of conversations. My only complaint is that it makes it tougher to go out to dinner with friends in some places.

There are lots of valid dietary choices... there are also lots of valid ethical choices as right and wrong is subjective. Personally, I feel like upholding my end of the social contract is more valid and influential in the long run, and while I know not everyone agrees with that stance, but that's ok.... they don't need to, just like I don't need to convince anyone of anything.

People gonna people and no amount of anything will stop that short of some kind of E.L.E. and then, well, who's gonna care?
