When eating peanuts served in the shell, do you shell them and only eat the nut, or do you eat the shell?

I didn't know you could eat the shell. Do you mean the papery brown covering between the shell and nut, or the actual outer shell?0
-
lmao wut no??0

The outer, thick grey shell goes in the trash, unless you're an elephant; I eat the inner red papery layer, but most people discard that as well.0

I mean the shell that holds the (usually) 2 nuts. Like if you went to a steakhouse that provides buckets of shelled peanuts you'd just pop the whole thing in your mouth.
I did just yesterday with some friends and they were both eating the whole thing. Despite the obvious germs that are probably on these in a steakhouse setting, I'd never seen anyone do it. Just wondering if my friends are psychos (as suggested above) or this is something many people do.
After a few beers I did give it a try. It was surprisingly not bad. Crunchy and very salty, but easily chewed.0 -
Really? People do eat these card boardy shells? Is there any nutritional value to it?

Good question. I looked on the USDA nutrient site but they don't seem to have it (which likely means they don't consider an 'edible portion'). I would imagine it has a good deal of fiber judging by the feel of it when chewed.

Fiber?
And, I guess, if you like the taste and/or texture, sure.0 -
There's fiber in them but you also run the risk of blocking up your intestines.0
-
If it's not harming you...whatever floats your boat lol0

I eat them hahaha tried to eat sunflower shells too once... let's just say the end result wasn't a good one
ETA: I do it cause that's where the salt is maybe I'm a bigger weirdo than I thought?0 -
Uh, wow, I've never heard of that. If I was at Texas Roadhouse (assuming that is the restaurant you are referring to, or similar) and saw people eating the whole thing I would assume they had a few too many alcoholic beverages.
Don't think that's something I'd like to try, but thanks for trying it for us and letting us know!0 -

I vote psychos0 -
That just sounds awful. Reminds me of the kiwi's we just bought. The package said you can even eat the peel.0

You can probably even build a boat with the stuff0 -
Once, when I was in GA, I got some boiled peanuts at a convenience store (because they are in every convenience store in GA). On the first few, I ate the shell because it was soft from being boiled and less messy than removing the soft shell. It was also very tough and stringy. I won't be doing that again.0

I thought that was a health risk due to aflatoxin?0 -

Why did you think that?

Did some searching and most info I could find was in forums that were blocked here (I'm at work). I did find this but I'm not sure how trustworthy it is.

Even after all these years, the staff here at Amalgamated Alice LLC is amazed at the crazy antics and just plain damnfool nonsense that makes up your everyday lives. In the case of Mr. Nuts, I think we can label shell eating a crazy antic. Mrs. Nuts's predictions of gastric disaster are probably overstated, but we can sympathize with her point of view. The shell of a peanut is primarily cellulose. To put that in perspective, so are hay, leaves, twigs, lumber, cardboard, tree bark, sponges, the little see-through windows in recyclable envelopes... Cellulose is a great source of food energy, but that energy is very hard to release. Unlike elephants, cows, goats, termites, silverfish, rodents, and other plant eaters, we don't have enough stomachs or the proper digestive microbes to handle it. So, Mr. Nuts, no matter how thoroughly you chew those tasty shells, they won't be much changed by the time they've sailed down your alimentary canal and out the other end. I'm sure you've noticed you're amazingly regular lately. Peanut shells would be fiber with a capital F.0 -

The shells can accumulate in the intestinal track. I'm assuming that's if you eat a lot of them though.0 -

I love this... need the like button..
My husband loves peanuts boiled (yuck) and I have seen him eat the outer shell, although it may be not on purpose, but in the case boiled it would make no difference..
I am a roasted, dry roasted person.. and not to mention honey roasted...0 -

My son was diagnosed with many nut allergies when he was 2. Peanut being the worst for him. We did a lot of reading up on nuts and I'm sure I remember reading about aflatoxin moulds on the shells and even in the roots from the soil.
Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly. I'll have to have a google.0 -

I have never eaten the shell of peanuts, just sounds yuck and annoying to eat. As for the kiwi, yes people do chuck the whole fruit in blenders and make a smoothie.. I wonder how much extra fibre and vitamins is in the peel?0 -

yes! The fuzzy brown peel. I didn't know people ate it. We usually cut it in half and scoop the fruit out. The peel just seems so...idk...too fuzzy to eat. lol0 -

yes, I could see doing this. I imagine there is a lot of vitamins in the peel. At least it would be a smoother texture once you put it in a blender with some other liquids.0 -
A guy I work with eats the shell on sunflower seeds but that's as close as I've seen. I always suck on the shell to get all the delicious salt but then shell it and eat the nuts only.0
