Using Bento Boxes for lunches.

I pack bentos everyday for the hubby, my child, and myself. My child has the exact same hello kitty bento box as the previous poster. Here is a pic of my typical bento lunch
Teriyaki pork with salad, grapes, and medium grain rice with sesame seeds.
I got this cookbook for christmas (yes I'm a nerd like that) and I LOVE it. I've cooked a bunch of recipes and they all turn out great and they are all pretty healthy and bento-able.

And can I just I just mention how much I love my Zojirushi rice cooker (also a Christmas present). If I could marry it, I would. I cook rice everyday for bentos.0 -

Some do, some dont. Most of the actual 'bento' boxes have instructions not to put soupy foods in them because they aren't leak-proof (although a lot of the time the instructions aren't in English ). I use Pyrex for mixing bowls and the like, but I don't like their food storage and transport range for that reason; I've had more than one co-worker use it and end up with more lunch in their handbag than in their actual box. If you can get it where you are, try the brand Sistema. I've been using their vented leak-proof bowls for ages; as long as you wash them by hand and not in a dishwasher, and don't actually "cook" food in the microwave with them, they stay leak-proof for ages.0 -

I've had a lot of soup mug leftover lunches and business lunches since the new year began, so I haven't been posting that many bentos (or I've forgotten!). Here's my bento for today and another from last week.
This one is choy sum stir fried in oyster sauce with tomatoes, and a really well formed but hidden bunny egg with sliced lamb sausages and rice. The pink container is breakfast - blueberry and lemon cornbread.
smoked salmon, furikake & yuzu pepper paste mixed in with rice and salad.

I just bought my first bento box - can't wait until it arrives! I've wanted one since I saw them on Pinterest and one lady had a cloth napkin in every one of hers and that's really what sold me on taking the time to prepare my lunch, cloth napkins are decadent.0

Finally remembered to post! Bento a la Rubbermaid Takealong and Ikea containers. For lunch is chicken thighs (sans sauce I usually have), carrots, cauliflower and later on as a snack onigiri. A snack (yay sword toothpicks) of a sliced up cheese stick and low-salt chicken breast, and salad with cucumbers, black olives and banana peppers, with honey Dijon dressing.0 -
1 kiwi and 200g papaya for breakfast. A babybel as a snack. Lettuce with cherry tomatoes and rotisserie chicken and balsamic dressing.
400kcal altogether.0 -

It's a sistema lunchbox cube. Bacon and egg salad, herbed potatoes, blanched broccoli and a gf brownie.
We now have a daiso in our area, so I think I may have have a new obsession.0 -

Today I brought Bento Beng to work with me, all filled with veggies pasta. Threw on more cheese, gave him a couple of dings in the microwave and a hot lunch was served.

my cutters are really small - about an inch in diameter. I do look like a loony going through the carrots at the supermarket making sure I get ones that have a consistent diameter the whole way down . Maybe the loony part isn't just in regards to the carrots though...0 -

Hubby has been away a while, so my lack of lunches has been from that reason. Back at it today and yesterday for a family outing, since none of us wanted food out. Today's lunch is not picture, they have all been simple lately, I have not been doing well. Here is yesterday's, 3 kids and 2 adults. Hubby packed his own, broccoli, deli ham, friots and bean dip. Mine is ramen with chicken, peas, carrots, and green onions and a side of animal crackers/strawberries. Kids all have grilled cheese (with or without deli ham), chips/animal crackers and strawberries.

Heh, maybe it's true about everything being bigger down under ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Unless they're baby carrots (and by those, I don't mean the baby shaped things which we don't get in Aussieland, I mean the ones that grow to about the width of a finger), the majority of carrots in a supermarket would work with the cutters. I just like getting ones that don't taper so I can use more of the carrot in my bento, instead of having a container of carrot ends in the fridge waiting to be re-purposed.0 -
Long time lurker here with a carrot suggestion: Some grocery stores sell carrots in 25 pound bags for horses or juicing, and these tend to be larger and less tapered than "premium" carrots, but still very tasty. They keep well, cost less, and provide a bonus workout from store to car to refrigerator.0

We can get those bags in Oz, but I don't think I could go through the bag before the carrots went off. I like the idea of a carrot bag grocery store workout though

Mangrothian, I noticed that you marinate a lot of things.. What else can you marinate other than eggs and chicken? And is there any other marinade that you use that does not have sodium? (i.e. not soy sauce or fish sauce)0

Most marinades will have a decent sodium component to them, as it's a main component of what helps break down the meat structure to make it tender. If it's not salty, then it's going to be sweet or alcoholic, as those are the other two components that help tenderise and flavour the meat; things like mirin (sweet rice wine), sake or white wine could be used, but they're rather bland on their own. There's also red wine and herbs, but you could only use that for stronger flavoured meats. Honey also works as a meat tenderiser, but it usually needs a salty flavour with it to make it palatable.
If you're trying to drop your sodium content, you can drop the amount of soy by half or a quarter, and make it up with mirin/wine if you're so inclined, or a nice vinegar even. You could technically use fruit juice, but I wouldn't guarantee the flavour. Chicken marinated in pineapple juice sounds kinda good though.
You can also remember that when you marinate, hardly any of the marinade itself actually ends up in the food. I checked it once for mfp logging purposes. I weighed the meat and measured the sauce, and when I was done after an hour only about 4ml of the marinade had soaked into the 100g of meat from the 4 tablespoons that was in the bag.
As to what else you can marinade, the sky is the limit; any protein, including tofu can be marinated quite easily, but you need to use stronger flavours with darker meats. Hell, you can even marinate potatoes before you bake them, but I don't know if that would go down well in a bento you see me mostly marinating chicken because it's a cheap lean protein source that I can fit in my Calorie goals. If I was eating more, you'd probably see a wider range of proteins in my lunches.0 -
Monday bento (excuse the colour of the image, it seems my phone had a bit of a brain fart).
Bento: rice, umeboshi, beef bulgogi meatballs, salad and a hidden pot of tonkatsu sauce (390 cals). For snacks, a tub of peaches in grapefruit juice (94 Cals) and a packet of rice crakers (68 Cals)

Hi all ! I've been stalking this thread, I already had a bento and bought a brand new one on Mon bento (I'm in France and it was the last day of the sales !)
So I made my lunches for tomorrow and Tuesday. Same ones except this one with feta, Tuesday's with humus instead. I've got pasta with EVOO basil and parmesan, blanched zucchini and red pepper, salad, cucumber, vinaigrette, one orange and in the little egg mold I have two dry figs for a snack (560 calories). Quite Mediterannean. Oh and my bunny

Leftover chicken strips, potato, and green beans. They ended up on his car floor board, however, the BBQ sauce box stayed closed, the rest ended up in the trash
Cheese, beef, pulled pork quesadilla with salsa

I forgot to post, but here are 2 bentos from earlier this week:
They're essentially the same thing: leftover carnitas, rice and veggies in one, a double-helping of veggies in the other, and then peaches and kiwi in the small tier.0
