Larisa – come out of the corner and just jump in. Tell us something about you, marital status, children, grandchildren, what you do for hobbies, do you work outside the home, stuff like that. Even you goal and how MFP is working (or not) for you.

Yikes! Okay. I'm going to skip a lot of that, for now, because it's long and complicated and sounds like quite the tale of woe...and well, woe is not my style. Thanks for understanding.

I can say that my hobbies include knitting and spinning, gardening, kayaking and skiing cross country/telemark, and I work as an independent database consultant, which can be 300 hours a month, or 12... you never quite know.

So far, I'm liking MFP okay. I'm restricting carbs as well as calories, and it doesn't quite do the math for me, on net carbs, but that's not such a big deal...and being able to add a meal on my laptop *or* my phone is handy.

Goals, hmm, long story short, I used to be quite athletic, and eat whatever I wanted, but I got injured and had six ortho surgeries (literally three per leg), over four years. It's been a little over a year since the last one...which got botched slightly, and now I have a permanent limp. But, dancing with a limp is still dancing, skiing with a limp is still skiing, etc.

During those four years, I gained about 40 pounds. I also lost 15 lbs of muscle, which, I don't even want to think about how much fat that means I actually gained, but we can all do the math. heh. Over the last year or so, I've built most of the muscle back, but not lost a single pound. :disappointed: Enter, MFP.
That said, my specific goals aren't about weighing a particular weight so much as being able to do a few things again, like at least a couple pullups, a hand stand, a pistol squat, a cartwheel, ski all day...I have a list

    Wish me luck?

Ahhhhh. I am in the land of heavenly green chili enchiladas with shredded chicken topped with an over-easy egg. The sad and bad part is I have 3 days to get my fill. Gotta love New Mexico!

    Hello ladies!

I'm here ... Just in a foul mood and not very good company. Failed miserably with Febrauary goals ... Have had to put out a few small fires with my older son ... My sinus crud came back... Got bit by a spider while sleeping ?! ... Generally speaking ... I'm having a pity party (which I promise will soon be over because that's just not my style).

KJ and Karen ... Thanks for asking!

Tons of sympathy Larisa! I'm a freelance editor, just coming out of one of those 300 hour a month months. Or, actually, more like two 250 hour a month months. Good for cash flow, but not so good for healthful food and fitness choices. I can tick off every other of your hobbies. I used to knit a lot but I hate spinning (if you mean the kind you do on a stationary bike). I garden whenever I get a chance but prefer canoeing to kayaking. Cross country skiing is great but telemark means too many hills for my taste.

Nice goals you've got there. Welcome out of the shadows!

We lived in coralville for 10 months. Moved up there expecting to retire there. Little did we know. We lived the first couple of months in Washington. Loved that little town.

I read in so many health and fitness blogs that "cheat days" are not a good idea. All you end up doing is erasing all your hard work that you've done all week. So, I don't do them. I allow myself a gooey dessert every day instead.

I do not allow myself cheat days. To me its back-pedaling. I am in a support group (TOPS) and every Wednesday after our meeting alot of the ladies go out to eat. I think its kind of hypocritical to preach great eating habits, then have fattening lunches. So, you can imagine they don't really invite me to lunch ever. I equate it to having a pristine checking account, always balanced, then every once in awhile bouncing a check. All it really does is stress you out, and worry about if you are going to balance the account for the rest of the week. For some it works great, but for me it doesn't work.

I agree, if we have to call it a "cheat day" right there it is sending guilt feelings. This is not a diet, not a destination, it is a life long healthy eating journey. That's not to say I don't have a dessert or something with more carbs once in a while, I do. I do figure it in to my calories, etc. But as you say, Becca, in an entire day you can blow your entire good work for the week. If you feel you are "cheating", you are probably not enjoying it. When I do allow myself a treat, I eat it slowly and absolutely enjoy every bite. :) Just my opinion.

    Janetr OKC

I have to disagree on this one. Life is about balance and for me, that means eating healthy most of the time and indulging in something "sinful" occasionally. I don't consume 5,000 calories on a cheat day, but I do have one yummy meal or one drink or one dessert. This does not in any way derail my progress. Instead, it allows me to continue with a healthy lifestyle that meets my physical and emotional needs. I am able to spend valuable time with friends or family without guilt, doing something that culturally (as humans) is bonding. In addition, the trainer that I admire and follow cheats occasionally on her own plan (as do every single one I've known) and she looks amazing. Were I not to cheat (and yes, I like that word because I never wish to be rigid in any aspect of my life) I would not - repeat NOT - be able to sustain a healthy diet.

I have to chime in... I think we all agree that to being on this journey with any degree of success, balance is needed. I think I shall always look at foods with a certain amount of "weighing in the portions, the fats, the sugar", you can't help but be more aware logging your food intake. I think looking at foods with a mindset that "every so often you have to indulge" or eat something "sinful" is a bit like giving yourself a out in committing to this fully. So, lets say I wish something sweet.....well I have Skinny Cow Mint Ice cream bars in the freezer. Lets say I want something salty....well I have the 100 calorie bags of microwavable popcorn. You can have your "vices" and not feel like you are back-pedaling. I think that my being imperfect with food choices is perfectly fine. Actually no one would even notice if each of us had "Cheat Days' unless we pipe it to everyone we see. So maybe its just a way for people to come clean with not being perfect.....ok lets just be human then. Maybe its people telling other people that they need approval to cheat...I don't know. hmmm that is my opinion so don't blast me... lol

I might have said waaay too much that was on my mind, but hey, I'm a Gemini, I wear my heart on my sleeve and say what I mean and mean what I say. An open book...that's me. Went to a pizza place, and had a great salad bar, and a slice of pepperoni. The thing I regret was a soda. Oh, just shoot me now! I was in sooo much pain, agony, and downright pain from one blasted soda... Just crazy when you don't eat something, then you do. Wow...I listened to opera music for a while...curled up in my Momma's quilt, quietly moaning and rocking. Kind of like a mental patient. Husband and son knew well to steer clear of me all night. Today feeling better, but my innards are SORE! Crazy night.

Yep Beth I believe it!! What hurt the most was that it was affecting my back. I thought maybe that I had stretched too much in the pool, but with my abdomen feeling like a brick, I knew it must have been the soda! I am officially off all sodas!!

    TGIF –
Started off with a pretty snow fall this morning in Delaware. Although it was pretty and not much, I am hoping it is the last one for the season. Did the early morning Cross Fit and also got a 2-mile (slow jog) in, all before 8:00.
I’m also going to have to get my workouts in early this weekend as I have a Needlepoint Class in Baltimore from 11-5, so will be mostly sedentary from the class and the drive back and forth.

Mary – thanks for the Kettle Ball info. We incorporate different KB exercises in CF, so I did look online for the challenge information. I purchased a 20lb KB, so should get here on Monday. I’m looking forward to the extra challenge.

Lenora – thank you for sharing the list, it is a great reminder of how wonderful life is.

GloworminWA – congratulations on your NSV.

Katla – I would be very sad – no Hot Tamales, I don’t eat them often, but they are my favorite!!!

    Wishing everyone a nice weekend.

beth so when does spring arrive in buffalo? I always feel like a fresh start when spring starts. I have been stalled myself where food and exercise are concerned but i keep on logging, i have not lost a single pound in a loooooong time but am going to stick to maintainence until i start the garden and some outdoor exercise.

Things are always tricky when we have other people to care for, gets overwhelming, yes?

Barbie Nice going on keeping up with your routine even when in a hotel
Beth bit by a spider? Yikes. Did you swell up?
Becca and Beth I'm sure as heck staying away from soda after that conversation.

Spent the afternoon at the casino. Won $90 on the slots and cashed out quickly. We aren't big gamblers, so started with $40 and came home with $60. I was thinking it was ironic that I was getting all those steps in walking around and inhaling second hand smoke. I stunk so bad when I got home I immediately changed. It didn't smell that bad when I was in there, but once I got outside and into the car -- stinko! I feel like sticking my head out the window just to air out my hair.

Did 60 minutes on the elliptical today (because new episodes of House of Cards were released today!).

Hello everyone! I'm new to this group but so happy to see it! I'll be turning 50 in July. So, here we are then. 50. Okee dokee then.

Not sure about you all but all the hormonal changes I've been going through have really thrown a monkey wrench into the works for how I workout and eat. I've had to make major changes to stave of weight gain and a little pot belly.

So I've found some things that work for me like less cardio and more strength training. Also major dietary adjustments. What works for everyone else?

    Thanks for sharing!!

Ooooh, yeah, Hot Tamales... Nope, nothing even remotely like them here. :disappointed:

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .

    Good Evening Ladies,

Mindy, a huge congrats on many fronts. First for the weight loss. Way to go!!! And then for doing such a good job of finding ways to cut expenses. The TV going seems a little extreme but hopefully that one won’t have to be permanent. We all do what we have to do but I hope you feel proud for the changes you’ve made. (((Hugs)))

CAN Cathy, I’m glad you have come through whatever was going on with you. Life often gets in the way of eating right but the main thing is to pick ourselves up and start again. Just never give up.

Nana, welcome. This is a great place for support and information when we aren’t going back and forth over semantics. LOL Good luck at the music camp and we look forward to getting to know you.

Heather, I agree that your DH is a keeper. My DH makes a great green salad. I don’t know why his turn out so much better than mine but glad he is willing to do it when I ask.

KJ, I admit that I like Whoppers too. Definitely not the relationship you have with them but those are the sorts of things I miss. When I think about it, I’m actually shocked that I don’t continue to lose weight because I used to eat terrible things like that all the time. I can take it or leave it when it comes to ice cream, pies , cake and cookies and lots of foods but I used to eat chips with lunch every day and cinnamon rolls for breakfast and a lot of high calorie meat. Just stopping eating those things should cause me to lose at least 2 or 3 pounds a week. Why isn’t that happening? It’s really ashamed it is so much easier to gain than lose. Glad you got a handle on that “thing” you have with Whoppers. eating-hamburger-smiley-emoticon.gif

Heather, I love hearing you talk about the blue and purple people. Rofl

Sue, welcome back. Sorry about the virus but glad your puter is all well and back to useable.

Liz, welcome. There is always room for another “Cat Lady”. :_) Come often and this time don’t go away when you reach your goal. We love having the maintainers here!

Lenora, I love the list. Thanks for sharing. One of my many favorites is: Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

Navybrat, it is amazing that it just takes one little something for our lightbulb to go off. Unfortunately, until it does, nothing anyone says will make a difference. I didn’t want to be fat…..I just didn’t want to have to work to be otherwise. Good for you and keep up the great work.

Anne, since you are so new on here I’m not sure if you are aware that I perform a special service when it’s requested. For those that do things like “eat a box of Girl Scout cookies” when it’s requested only, I will put on my “kickin’ boots” and give you a swift kick. bootprint-smiley-emoticon.png Some of us actually think about if we have one of our friends from here sitting on our shoulder watching all that we eat. I mean, we know we shouldn’t eat it but if someone is watching closely it might be enough to help us stopshamed-smiley-emoticon.png. Just some info for you and the other newbies.

Katla, I hope you have good sailing weather!!!

Goria, wooo hoooo. Doing happy dance with you. clicking-your-heels-smiley-emoticon.gif

Joyce, so sorry for the beet mishap and the cold, yucky dog. Just a sweet memory for your BD? (((Hugs)))

Heather, thanks for reminding me of how I used to have to navigate in the bed. Picture a beached whale! It is so nice to finally be a manageable size and I still have so far to go.

Larisa, welcome! You are welcome to lurk as long as you want but when you finish that please tell us a little about yourself. This is a great place for support and information. We also ask that you sign each post with your name and a location, general or specific. Come often.

KJ, I love your guesses on NSV. I’m sure it’s been posted by now but in case it hasn’t it is “Non Scale Victory”. Anything over and above weight. All the great things we find about losing. North Shore Vacation doesn’t sound too bad!!!

Marcelyn, when did they open that gate from Houston? Are you traveling for business or pleasure? Hope it’s a good trip but don’t overdo on the enchiladas.

Beth, so glad to hear from you!!! You know we are here for a good Pity Party any time you need it. Got to do it to get through it, girl. Lean on us and we will all move forward. ((((Hugs))))

Kimses, congrats on winning $$. I’m not much of a gambler either but usually lose what I have allotted. Good to win and run!!

Diane, welcome. Oh just wait until you get 10 or 15 years older. It’s not for sissies but actually quite liberating for me. I’m lovin’ life. Come often and join right in.
m1277.gifto any Newbies that I missed. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.

DH and I are going out to the Moose Club tonight. This is our first Friday night there but my line dance teacher goes ever Friday night and they do lots of line dancing. Woo Hoo. I may get my new thinner butt out there for one or two, who knows? Thinking of all of you with love.

I hope all of you have a healthy and happy day. good-afternoon-smiley-emoticon.gif]

    Words I live by:
Savor. I have to slow down and savor every bite.
    and
Opportunity. Each day offers new opportunities for good health and happiness if we just look for them and choose them.

Soda - I love soda water, have it every day from my soda stream with Angostura bitters in it, and occasionally a diet coke or tonic. My secret is I can burp for England! My DH has to put his fingers in his ears. I'm sure they can hear me across the English Channel. Bit difficult in a restaurant though!

Welcome new ladies! I had my gallbladder out in 2002. No problems since. You ladies who are doing intensive strength training seem to have done yourselves a favour! Certainly saves on time. :)

I did a good session of writing on my memoir today. Just finished my first year at school. I was so skinny then and had such a good appetite I was known as "Hollow Legs".

Feel better today. I went to bed around 1 AM, didn't get to sleep until around 4 but woke up at 2 PM!!!!! But my fit bit still says I got a little over 7 hours of sleep. I had had my settings for the sleep at normal and I changed it to sensitive today and I will see how that changes how the fit bit actually detects if I am sleeping or just laying there being still. So I ate lunch a little after 2,at 4 PM DH is asking me what and what time supper was going to be. Gheesh! He did some laundry this morning and I am looking at a big pike of towels he put on a recliner in the living room for me to fold. He knows I like to fold a certain way and he folds it a different way so he washes and I fold. Works for me. He was so uncomfortable last night, just filled with so much gas was moaning. I got him to take a couple of his chewable Simethicone and it worked. But then he started watching tv around 3 AM and felt 'it' and just took off running to the bathroom. We had a BIG mess to clean up at 3:30 AM. But it relieved what was going on in his belly and he was able to get a little bit of decent sleep until the next diaria. I am wondering if it is time to get another C Diff test again to see if he has the bacteria in his colon again. If so they will do a colonoscopy and do a fecal transplant. Or maybe it's time for a big Cortisone regimine that takes a full month. It's a Big dose of oral cortisone.

So great to see all the new people. Welcome everyone.

To all of you who have shared your great news it lifts my spirit to hear about it all.

Sorry not responding to individuals but using my cell today so harder to read it all and remember what everyone has posted with no paper or pen to take notes.

    Beth ((((hugs))))

Marcelynn, one of my sons lives in Washington Iowa with his family and I go there often, for shopping too. Less traffic, less people than in the IC area. Why didn't you stay? We could have been neighbors! I lived in IC when I was 8, then moved there in '93 when I escaped a bad marriage. Moved to a small (1800 people) town 25 miles SW of Iowa City in 2001 since I got a lot nicer house and more land than I had in IC for the same amount of money. I still go to IC for the library (was there today- got 11 non-fiction books, mostly history, for my reading for the next two weeks).
