Kristan - your backside disappearing made me recall how every year around my birthday some other part of my body falls southward. giggle.gif

Irish Terri - do you celebrate St Patrick's Day in Ireland or is it an American celebration so we can all pretend to be Irish for a day? waving-irish-flag-smiley-emoticon.gif

Heather - that look on you DGSs face when he is holding Beatrice is priceless. Reminds me of how some new Dad's look "OMG don't give me the baby I don't know what to do with it!" scared-and-sweating-smiley-emoticon.gif

When my nephews were born I sent their older sisters a boy doll with a bib on which I had embroidered their new brother's names. That way they could copy mommy with the new baby and not feel left out.

Seems like all of our WA sisters are online since the big wind storm the other day. I was thinking about all of you and those in OR as the storm hit and stayed here. strong-wind-smiley-emoticon.gif

    Love to all - Gloria

I just love the eager little big sister hand coming in from the right!

Heather - A while ago you mentioned enjoying how the Scandinavian languages stick words together to make new words. When I was learning Swedish, a historian friend of mine had a PhD thesis to comment on. The first word of its title was "Truppanskaffningsfinansieringsproblematik" which means "Problems related to financing of recruitment of troops". I decided then and there that Swedish was a GREAT language.

Joyce - You mentioned stumbling across an article about our seed bank on the MSN news feed. Yep! The famous "Doomsday Vault" is within walking distance from my house (provided somebody comes along carrying a rifle - it's out beyond the area considered safe from polar bears). There are seed banks all over the world where they store local crop seeds. They can be sown if something happens to the usual seed sources, but their main purpose is to conserve the genetic diversity that's so precious in plant breeding. The local seed banks tend their seeds, testing their ability to germinate and sowing them to produce a fresh new supply of seeds every once in a while.

Our seed bank doesn't do that - for obvious reasons. Instead, we store backup supplies of seeds from all over the world. The idea is to have an extra supply in case of catastrophes at the local seed banks. Catastrophes range from full-scale nuclear war to simple lack of funding for maintenance. Longyearbyen is a stable community in a safe place, far from conflicts, and even if the power should fail, the permafrost should keep the seeds safe for months or even years. The first "withdrawal" from the vault wasn't expected until 2050, but actually happened last October. The heroic workers at the seed bank in Syria hadn't been able to tend the seeds properly so a proportion of the Syrian deposit was taken out and sent to Lebanon to be rejuvenated. So sad that it should be necessary!

Kim - Your pictures of tulips, hyacinths, narcissi and the vine that has strewn white flowers over the brick steps of the back entrance make me long for an old fashioned spring! I won't get it, though.

The sun is back here, but it's -18°C (0°F) and windy so it was a challenge running to and from the gym today. But I DID IT!
    At the gym I did
    Goblet squats: 16kg×8×3
    Plank: 65 s
    Dumbbell press: 2×6kg×10×3
    Deadlift: 30kg×8×3
    Back extension: 8×3
    Side plank: 30 s L+R
    Barbell lunge: 15kg×8L+R×3
    Sitting row: 20kg×10×3
Static side lunge w/ arm raise: 2×1kg×10L+R×3
    Dead bug: 5L+R×3 (Yay KJ!)
    Calf stretch/raise: 50kg×10×3
Total calorie burn (including jog to and from) 594

Good morning all! Happy Thursday, Happy St. Patrick's Day! Eire go brach! I know the Irish don't celebrate with green beer. My daughter's friend from Dublin laughed at the American green beer tradition. I usually pass on the green beer. If I am going to ingest green dye, it will be in MnM form!

Irish Terri- To echo some one above who asked "How do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Ireland?" I have heard that St. Patrick chased the snakes out of Ireland is a metaphor for ??????? Who were the snakes? The French? The English? The pagan society? He was a priest after all, I could see him not liking the original pagan people. Was he even Irish? Was he English? LOL! I know...too many questions. The furthest I get into St. Pat's day with my littles is stories of fairies and leprechauns, games involving finding and trying to catch a leprechaun, and eating corned beef and cabbage for lunch/dinner. We always end the day setting a trap for a leprechaun who we ALWAYS almost catch; all he leaves are his boots or his hat and a small pot of gold coins (chocolate) for the "nice try and better luck next time".

Marcelyn- You are a brave, BRAVE soul! I may have small children in my house all day, but it is for the reason you talk about (kids being up and upset/crying all night) that I don't offer overnight care. I would never make it through the next day! It sounds like you are doing a great job with the grands. Are the four who stay the older ones?

Gloria- What a great idea to send a baby for the siblings to care for while mommy takes care of the new baby!

Katie- LOL! The search for big breasts cracked me up! I remember when search engines were young, people would get online and search their own name. Everyone in my family learned rather quickly NOT to search our last name. You'd be surprised (or not so much) what comes up when you type in LaMore. Lots and lots of strippers and porn stars with the last name LaMore or Lamour. By the way, I love your work out! That was me last week and the week before! Hope you feel better soon!

Heather - DArling, darling kids! Loving those pictures! <3

Joyce- I would bet anything that the church is using a new cleaning product and you had a reaction to it. To this day, I can still "smell" that clean, polished wood, slightly musty smell of my church from my youth. Funny how that smell memory will stay with you!

Carol- great video! Thanks for sharing!

Jazzypdx- sounds like you are doing well! Glad to know you are gleaning a little support and ideas from our group!

Kristan- I found a 30 day squat challenge I am going to start in April. I love butt work!

Larisa- Soul Sister! Have you done any flying? So far my flying is limited to parasailing a couple of times and any roller coaster that will hang me or zoom me around in flight position. I would love to sky dive at least once. But the base jumping with the wing suits just fascinates me. I really think it is top on my Bucket list.

Beth and Connie- I first thought Spinach, even though I knew it was Spanish!

KIm- Love the garden pics! Makes me anxious for spring and growing things!

Well, more kids arriving! Hugs to all that I have missed!

Kimses - Your good example might be catching! <3 I can't believe it when you US ladies talk about all the junk food on offer in your offices! To me that just seems terrible! Why? Why? Is it what everyone wants? If enough people didn't want it couldn't you bring it up at a meeting? Surely these days people are much more health conscious. I have never worked in an environment ( I was a teacher of adults ) where there was constant pressure to snack on rubbish - maybe once a year at Christmas at an end of term class party. I know you can say NO, but that kind of environment must be very dispiriting and depressing. Perhaps people would be glad if someone spoke up. (Not when you've just started there, obviously.)
Good question. I think it's convenience, boredom and a distraction. After I posted yesterday, the same woman who went out for Chinese showed up with a bag of Reese's. Needless to say, she didn't need it and neither did I. When I asked if there were any walking trails around, her response was "I'll walk with you. But only in the gym on the treadmill and no more than 20 minutes because I don't want to sweat". There was also a chocolate cake in the kitchen. However, I will say the company gives you a voucher for lunch each day and there is a nice salad bar and soup and there is a grill that has veggie burgers, salmon and grilled chicken. So the options are there if one decides to choose them. The refrigerator has plenty of free seltzer too (plus soda :( So I was thinking about what to take in to set a healthier tone. Possibly fruit. I also like to make spritzers with blueberry seltzer, frozen blueberries and a little bit of blueberry juice.
Someone also commented on my taking the stairs instead of the elevator. We're on the second floor!!!
And while I'm complaining, the other thing that drives me nuts is when people say "Oh, you are being so good" when you opt for salad over pizza. Rather than explaining things in detail, I usually just say "I just happen to like salad".

Working from home today so I can write long posts :)

That is quite an impressive workout (especially so after I confirmed the conversion of kg to lbs)..We may not all be working out together as workout buddies but sharing what we do is the next best thing. :)

I don't remember who asked how to get your log in days reset; The link above will help you. I had my days reset to the total days I've been on MFP because I had several times when I couldn't log in because of internet problems and travel to campgrounds with no internet (back in the "old days" before my smart phone).

Happy St Patrick's Day to All....Barbie, the cartoon is cute. I used to paint shamrocks on my 5th graders who did not wear green. Didn't want them to get pinched.

Kim ~ Love the flowers and you look great in your photo.

    Heather ~ Darling Grandkids

Marcelyn ~ You are a trooper! How you manage with 6 kids ranging in ages like that is hard to comprehend. I kept both of my grand children until they were one yr old and after that only when they were ill and couldn't go to day care.

Beautiful weather for the last two weeks but expecting frost this weekend.

    Happy St. Patrick's Day!

    Heather so sweet.

Kim gorgeous thank you for sharing!

    Beth thank you for asking.

I believe I am doing the best I can under the circumstances. DH treatment is slowly being effective for his kidney cancer. He is feeling much better and has fewer side effects. DS just got out of the hospital and is in a treatment program. The situation is so difficult now he will no longer be able to live with us when he gets out of treatment. :heartbreak:

To keep myself healthy. I limit subbing to three days a week unless it is one classroom. One day a week I volunteer in a Kindergarten classroom for half a day. Sing in a church choir. I found a fun one that challenges me musically. I just bought some seeds to start my gardening going. I drink something called Kombucha daily, it is a fermented tea. Despite all the stress I have not had a cold or the flu this season. I did get my flu shot. My weight is another issue. Although I no longer stress eat. I do find portions and eating ice cream for dessert not helping.

I know the intense stress raised my cortisol levels. This is part of the weight gain too. I am trying to meditate and pray more to find the calm place within myself to bring this level down. Blood pressure is sometimes an issue now too because of weight gain and stress. I had a tough class on Tuesday and ended up with a hemorage in my eye as a result. I am sure it was related to my blood pressure. I am taking this warning seriously. Most of the class was great. Unfortunately there were three to four who made it difficult. I know this teacher will deal with them.

Beth hope all is well with you. I know it is not always easy for you, too.

    Margaret

    Hey, guys,

I'm reading, but not writing much, and loving the pictures! Barbie, the St. Pat's day cartoon actually made me chuckle. Heather - Beatrice is a beauty. Love the old names, my favorite niece is named Vivyan, after my mother.

To the new ones, welcome, hugs to those who need them, wallops for those who need a kick in the pants, congratulations to those who are meeting their goals, commiseration for those (like me) who are not.

Just busy-busy. Taking advantage of the 80-degree days and running every day. Exercise is not an issue. Food... well, yeah, I'm still an addict. Working on it, one day, one meal, one bite at a time.

    Love y'all,

Margaret ~ Prayers said for you and your family! Last night I had a bad dream about teaching...the students were being totally unruly and I could not get my breath when I woke up. If your subbing is too difficult, try to cut back and do it for only the class you love.

    morning peeps -

    love the plant pics!

well, the day is supposed to be nice by the time I get off of work. if that's the case, i'll ride home.

    happy green day!

I was once told I was a cardio head, I think maybe that's true. Thursdays is the day that I have intentionally set aside for mostly shoulder stretches, etc.. and it kills me to see under 100 calories for the time I was doing that, that's why I'm telling myself, 'ride home, you'll get more calories in".

kimses2- she'll walk with you ONLY if it's on a treadmill and ONLY for 20 min. because she doesn't want to sweat????? I think I'm like jill from the biggest looser, the screamer, in your face person? I don't think your friend would not like me much.. lololl

    later peeps

So lessons for St. Patty's Day:
#1 - make sure your pajamas have green on them because the grandkids give no mercy or time to get dressed before the pinching starts!

    lol

So how did I end up with 6 grandkids? I agreed at the beginning of the school year to watch two grandchildren during their days off from school. They are ages 8 and 6. We have had a good time all year on our days together although Christmas was a bit trying as two weeks was more than either of us wanted together. lol They do not spend the night. The other four I got because I didn't check my calendar and realize that I already had 2 during the day. Honestly though I probably would have taken them anyway because it's a great thing for my son and his wife to get to go on a trip, totally paid for by his company as an outstanding employee of the year. The overnight kids are ages 9, 8, 2-1/2 and 1-1/2. Trouble is what I call the two little ones. They are darling but my son and his wife are a lot more lenient about some things than I ever was, or will be. They live their lives in a state of perpetual destruction.

Today looks to be a bit better simply because the screaming for mom and dad by the 2 yr old only lasted an hour last night and I had started the bedtime process early in anticipation of it so by the time he fell asleep I still got a decent night's sleep. Sleep. Oh lovely sleep. The other five grandkids are coming over (with their mothers) and we are doing a family grandkid picture for my husband's office. Hopefully it will turn out. Getting 11 kids to sit for a picture and smile or at least look at the camera at the same time is a challenge. We have two that are terribly camera shy and refuse to have their picture taken, it 's going to involve bribery I think. I stocked up on M & M's for the occassion.

Items on the list today are planting the garden and cleaning out the visiting kids van (I had to borrow it so I could go anywhere, my car won't hold four kids, let alone 6!). It smells DISGUSTING. I think there's a lurking dirty diaper in it and I just can't find it. We are emptying the entire thing out. The 9 yr old is earning money for a mission trip this summer so he will vacuum it for me.

I might survive. It is looking positive. I still question my sanity and believe me I will be double checking calendars if I ever get asked to do this again!

SugarDarlin1… - I’ve heard of Lake St. John and Lake Concordia. I think Lake Concordia is north of the road that goes through Vidalia; and, if that is so – DYS has friends who live on that lake. It might be Lake St. John that feeds the slough where they have their place (if that is the one that would be South of Clayton). I’ll have to ask one of them about it. It’s a big lake; but, not as big as Concordia. I think Concordia has skiers on it; but, not so much St. John’s. The Tenses River runs alongside of the road he takes to go to work. We’ve ridden a lot up and down the lake and I can’t tell (because I get turned around) if the Tenses runs into the lake. For some reason I don’t think so; because it doesn’t seem to be bothered by the ‘crests’ of any ‘river’ like they worry about the ‘cresting’ of the MS River. They are only affected at lake place by the massive rains they’ve had these past few weeks.

Michele in NC – I know how you feel about not being able to drive. It drove me crazy the first time; then was even worse, when I had a 2nd seizure before it was up … extending the time I had to go before I could drive again. Of the 5 seizures I have had in the past 3 years; nobody was with me except for the last one; but, I knew it was a seizure I was having. Mainly because I would always end up on the floor. The last one I had (August, 2014) was by far the worst because I was out of the deck and when I went down I hit my head of the top and bottom rails of our deck and the stiles as well, knocking me out cold. When I finally came to, my DOS was trying to get me awake, DH had the most mortified look on his face, and DDnL#1 was going inside to call for an ambulance. The only thing I ever had to ask DH to take me to was early morning MD appointments; then my BF would come get me and take me to her house to stay until he could come get me. Sometimes he’d bring me home, because I did not like staying at her house with nobody to talk to. I take Dilantin 100mg twice a day; Lamictal 250mg twice a day. I take another seizure med - Geodon (that in connection with my Seroquel acts like an anti-anxiety or anti-depressant), so I have not had a seizure since August 2014 – hope I don’t jinx myself. He drives me 2 hours one way every 3 months to see my PsycheMD – I will NOT see one in Albany or any associated with the city hospital because of what one did to me during a Lithium Toxicity storm. I had been in ICU for 3 weeks prior to being transferred to the psyche ward; and, all I can say is she was the most ‘mean-spirited’ woman I have ever encountered. I ended up taking her before the State Composite Board of Medical Examiners and when her contract with the hospital expired, she was fired (because of my complaint). She would not send my own MDs my records; and when I went to the hospital to get them, was told I could not have them as she had put a note on the file that they were NOT to be released to me. I did not want them, just wanted them to be send to my own MDs.

When I filed my complaint with the SCBME; my records were released to me immediately. When I sent them to the SCBME as ‘evidence’ to her ‘lack of medical attention’ and ‘failure to release my records to my own MDs’ I pointed out all the things that had to have been done AFTER the fact. The most important things was the habeas corpus hearing filed on a Friday afternoon that none of us knew about. She was too stupid to make sure that I would have had 3 days from the filing (supposedly) of it to be able to hire an attorney to be present. The hearing was never held; because she sent me to a state-fun mental facility. She had had my ‘discharge summary’ dictated and transcribed 3 days before she sent me there. During that time my family could not get into the ward because ‘technically’ they did not show I was a patient there. Long story, short; I found it difficult to ‘trust’ any MD for a while. When I went to my ‘new’ PsycheMD in another town 2 hours away; I took the entire 5” binder full of stuff that I had sent to the SCBME’s and he kept it until my next visit. He could not believe that ‘any’ MD would have done what she had done to me. He told me that ‘if I was his patient’ there would have been a lot of other places he would have sent me to if he could not get my medications straightened out. He even agreed that I had taken the proper steps to show her that I’m NOT stupid because I am bipolar.

I also got a lot done around the house while on the restriction; but, hated that I could not go anywhere on my own.

Kristen – My butt has disappeared, too. I’d like to find an exercise that would help ‘lift’ it. My DOGD is supposed to bring some over for me to try.
