The Honey Stinger Chocolate Gel I tried this morning was really good. No stomach problems from it, and I definitely felt it kick in about mile 6, after taking it after I finished mile 4. To me, it tasted a little like Nutella and I really liked it. Only complaint is it did make me a little thirsty when I first ate it, but that's it. The caffeine in it gave me a nice boost on my last couple miles.
One of my best running friends tried to tell me for weeks that she "didn't need water" after taking a GU. Then she tried water after GU and it changed her life. You're supposed to drink after taking the gels or else you get pretty bad sticky-mouth!0 -

Fun running all around today! Ran from Princeton to Ewing, NJ with a running buddy/teammate of mine to do an almost-11 mile warm up before a 6k brewery race. I knew I wanted to "race" but not go all out, since this was mostly a "for fun" social event race. I mostly just needed one last confidence booster before the hard marathon taper really takes off. I decided I'd try for something between 10k and HM effort, and I nailed it! Paced 7:18 overall, even with my calf sleeves choking the life out of my calves... I have decisively ruled those out as part of my marathon-day outfit. They're great for recovery and slower runs, but I just can't race in them (which is sad because they looked really badass).
Post-race there was so much going on! Food trucks. Beer. Awards. Beer. I came in 6th in my age group, so no award for me, but 2-3 people from my team got awards! And I got to meet @instantmartian who was super friendly! It's always nice to meet someone from online in real life and know you haven't been catfished
Great swag: growler for having a team of 10+, plus everyone got pint glasses (for a free beer!) and metal coasters!
@instantmartian and me! Also yes, I did store my banana in my sport bra strap for most of the post-race festivities
Hope everyone's weekend runs and races have been spectacular so far! Can't wait to read all about it!

Total: 48.5/60
Took a little jog to the store and back. It kind of was "junk miles" but I can't really look at it that way. My wife jogged with me and jogged the whole time! I'm so proud of her, after not having run more than like 100 yards in like 7-8 years, she asked if she could run with me, and this was our first little test. She set the pace and I pushed the stroller with little man.
@kristinegift I rarely take water with me on runs, or at least I haven't since it was cold enough, so I didn't think about that when I grabbed the gel. Just glad that it didn't bother my stomach....it tasted really good!5 -
Race report: Running for Ronald 10K, Macon, Georgia.
This is the first time I've run this race, and first time for this course. The race is billed as a 5K/10K/15K. They didn't post a map, so I wasn't sure how they were doing it. In retrospect, I had to SMH. It's a 5K, that you then repeat either one or two times for the remaining distance, duh. I'm sure other folks around here got it as soon as they saw the slashes.
Anyhoo. Fairly pleased with my pacing, especially because I mostly avoided the race mindset, and just kept myself pretty slow. Of course, the course "helped" with that - we've had some fairly rainy days this week, and part of the course was on the Heritage Trail alongside the river, and was VERY MUDDY. I joked with another couple runners, "I guess this goes down as my first trail run!"
Got to the finish line, and had been contemplating doing the 10K twice to get my miles for the day (and to do a little catching up on my month goal!). Dropped off my time card, and had to ask, "You've already pulled the other finishers in this box, right? No way I'm first!" They weren't sure, and after bumping fists with a friend from work, I decided I could at least run the course one more time, so headed back out (@Stoshew71 - it was maybe 5 minutes from crossing the finish to starting back up, so probably not much EPOC to think about).
Got back around (no, I wasn't the last on the course. I don't think.) and had some water while they announced the 15K folks. After that, for giggles, I asked to see the 10K list. OMG! 1) 50-54 Male: Dana Smith! Of course, there WASN'T anyone else in the AG, but still! As my son has helpfully pointed out, I have to keep in mind that it also means that I was the slowest in my age group, so I need to think about improvement!
I'm now caught up for the month, but tomorrow is a rest day, so.... But yay me!6 -
Hi,
I am taking part in a few other challenges and had a bad (busy work) week last week and as such I forgot to post on this one!
I only managed 5km last week
This week I have done 2 runs, Tuesday 8km, Friday 7km very pleased with this as after last week!!
Thanks I know I am not doing as much running as some, however, I am doing it for me! The challenge is getting me out there and getting me fitter!!! So a big thanks for doing this thread!
At least I have configured Mr Ticker correctly Lol

@9voice9 Congrats on winning the AG! You were lapping all your fellow 50-54Ms who were in bed/on the couch/not out running!3

Overview:
An easy 6 miles this morning! It was so sunny and warm (65 degrees!) and just the slightest little breeze. My legs were really sore and tired for the first 4 miles, but they felt pretty great at the end! Went a little too fast on the last two miles but sometimes it can’t be helped *shrug*

Ran the Garmin Half Marathon this morning. I set a new PR of 2:28:39. I'm super pleased by that because my big spring goal was to run a half under 2:30, and that is now achieved.
The expo, the event itself, course, volunteers, aid stations, and post race amenities were fantastic!! Unfortunately they did not plan on people leaving after the race because the road out of parking was closed due to being part of the course. Nobody knew this ahead of time and there were long lines of cars sitting still for over 90 minutes before gaps between runners were sufficient to let enough cars out to get the lines moving. There was a full marathon as well which is why there were still so many runners for so long. It's a shame because they are going to get some heavy, well deserved criticism for it. Other than that one issue though this was a spectacular event, much changed and much improved over prior years. It could have been the best event in the area this spring perhaps but that issue was bad enough to leave everyone with bad feelings upon leaving.
My sister in law ran this one too. Last week she was concerned about running a second half a week later. On the way to the race she said she was up all night with a fussy two year old, only getting a couple hours sleep. So she started about 10 minutes behind me around the 2:40 group assuming she would be doing a lot of walking and be slow. I saw her pass me around mile 1 and she kept on going ahead out of sight. She finished in 2:18 the same as last week And she didn't look any more tired than last week. The seeds of a full are planted in her head too according to her, but she is still very unsure. I am just wondering if she will run a full this year, or next.

@WhatMeRunning You are turning your SIL into a serious runner! Maybe you can be training buddies! That's funny about the parking/course closure situation. Somebody's gonna get a stern talking-to about that. Maybe it was a ploy to get more people to stay for awards/festivities? Also, since it was put on by Garmin.... was it 100% accurate 13.1?!1

My watch lost satellite after 3.66 miles today. Luckily, I was running the exact same route (back and forth over the 2.5 miles in front of my house) that I've been running since last summer. I had noticed I was at exactly 3.5 miles as I passed my house, so I knew where I was and how far to keep going. I didn't, however, know where the .2 of today's scheduled 6.2 miles would land me, so I just ran 6.5. My watch still kept the time, so I was able to figure out my pace. It was a great run, and as silly as it sounds, I was really proud of myself for continuing to run despite my tech failing on me

The mile markers were all in the right spots (a little ahead as normal though) except for some reason the 8 mile marker was a good quarter mile past the real mile 8, not sure why.

I have a problem, that 90 minute 8.2 mile run this morning was awesome and I want to keep doing that.....but my weekly miles aren't enough to keep that run in the 25-35% range.....might have to stick with shorter for now....
Oh and after an ice bath, my foot has felt fine or great all day. Thinking I had some major inflammation from something and the ide soak took care of it....that was done before my jog with my wife....good day, very good day.4 -

@Becky71_cmP Good job, keep it up! That's quite a leap in pace, so going back a few weeks in the C25k was probably a good idea. You'll do great at the Relay for Life!
@Elise4270 I hope the injection helps until the surgery and keeps you running. I wish you all the best! Surgery and scars probably don't sound like much to look forward to, but if it fixes your hip, they will be worth it. And not being able to move toes or feet sounds a lot scarier than a scar! @shanaber's idea with the tattoo around the scar sounds really cool, actually
@sunnybeaches105 You can still shoot for a sub-30-min in the next 5k, a run with your entire family sounds like lots of fun!
@kristinegift The brewery race sounds awesome, kudos on the great pace!
And a note on the gels: another reason for needing water after taking a gel is not that I get a sticky mouth, I also end up with sticky hands - seems I am unable to tear open the packets without making a mess! I've gotten into the habit of only taking gels when there are fountains or at least puddles around ;-p
@9voice9 Lol, what a motivating comment from your son on your age group win ;-) I saw the run log on Strava, great race!
@WhatMeRunning Wow, congratulations on your half marathon, super time! Sub 2:30 is what I am secretly hoping for for my HM in May, but I'm not sure I can pull it off.
The parking situating sounds a messed up. And there I already thought my 10k last week was badly organised in that regard - they gave some hints on where to park on their website, but didn't mention they would be closing most of the roads leading there, so a lot of people (including myself) spent quite a while circling the area, trying to find a way to actually get to those parking lots. But at least you could get away whenever you wanted.2 -
@kristinegift & @instantmartian So cool that you guys got to meet each other. Loving the goodies & free beer, WHAT?!?
@9voice9 Way to go on getting those extra miles in & your AG win. Hey, a win is a win even if you had no competition.
@WhatMeRunning Congrats on your PR.

I had lots of fun today, trying out a new trail! Well, most of my run was my usual mix of countryside roads and paths, but there were a few kms of forest thrown into the mix as well.
Somehow, I ended up on the wrong side of the river for at least 2km (turns out there weren't actually trails on both riverbanks - in hindsight, the line on the map on the western banks where I tried to run, turned out to be the boarder, not a trail. So my "run" there mostly consisted of lot of sliding down muddy slopes, clinging to branches and roots to scramble up steep hillsides, and slow-motion creeping from mossy rock to mossy rock to cross small streams. Every now and then, I could catch glimpses of the real trail on the other side of the river...
I was quite happy when I finally found a fallen tree spanning the river, so I could make my way to the other side. My sense of balance is horrible and I didn't fancy falling in, so I crawled across on all fours, feeling a little dorky. But nobody saw me, and after that, I could actually continue at something much closer to the running pace I had originally planned.
Quick question related to my adventure today: do trail running shoes actually make it easier to run on trails (or in the absence of trails), or would I still be sliding down the muddy and mossy bits?
Not that I'm looking for an excuse to buy another pair of running shoes or anything, obviously not! But it would be kind of nice if I didn't have to slow to a walk everytime the trail turns to a muddy mess.

April 2016: 122.6km of 180km done0 -
@_nikkiwolf_ Sounds like an adventure today. Yes, trail shoes do matter. I've had some that were great in very muddy, slippery conditions. I only wear trail shoes.0
-
Thanks _nikkiwolf_! I have some work to do.
About 5 years ago when I was trail running regularly I did like trail runners, and I also used gators on bad days to keep all the rocks and mud out of them. Your distances are awesome!0 -

@9voice9 - Age group awards are highly dependent on who shows up. You showed up, which makes you better than everyone who didn't show up. Among my age group results - I won the 50-59 age group in an 8 mile trail race, because the real trail runners in that group all opted for the 12 mile version. I estimated that if I had been able to hold my 2nd loop pace for a 3rd loop (not a certainty!) I would have been 5th or 6th. OTOH, when I didn't really think I could break a 20 minute 5K I turned in a smashing 5K PR of 19:16 . . . and came in second in the 55-59 AG, because a 56 year old from another state ran a 17:30. Stuff like that happens.
I've won my age group in every race I've entered since I turned 60. That streak will break on Monday. There are too many guys seeded faster than my dream result time for all of them to have a bad day.
No running for me today. I got in my car and drove from Rochester, NY to Framingham, MA. I could have driven in to Boston if I'd had a reservation there for tonight, but I judged it not to be worth the energy to drive in, pick up my bib late, and drive back to Framingham where I have the reservation. Tomorrow morning I'll drive in and park near where my reservation for Sunday and Monday nights is. I think I should be able to manage a preview of the end of the course tomorrow; but then I'll have a short night. Getting enough sleep tonight might be pretty important.6 -

@Elise4270 - Yikes! Your doc seems to have a twisted sense of humor! I hope the surgery is successful and you will be pain free. I'm guessing you'll be feeling so good you may run circles around the rest of us a Jenks this fall!
@Orphia - Congrats on the PB, and congrats again on the great success on your goals!!
@5BeautifulDays - My thoughts are with your friend.
@louubelle16 - It sounds like you need a bit more recovery after your half perhaps. Could it be iron?
@sunnybeaches105 - It sounds like a winning day at the 5k to me!! Congrats to the kids, and good luck on your training and future races!
@4leighbee - Congrats on the distance PR!!
@kristinegift - That is some great swag! Yesterday was the first time I've been at a race that had beer at the end. It was marvelous!! That should be required at all finish lines.
@MNLittleFinn - Hope you solved the foot issues for good with that ice bath.
@9voice9 - Way to go getting that first and last place wrapped up on your first "trail run"!
@Diantha21 - We're all running for ourselves, no matter the distance. Don't ever feel like you have too few miles, we all started from zero at some point. And we all have learned the hard way the pains/injuries of pushing too hard too fast. Just do what you can, and keep on posting. That's the magic formula here. My first month my goal was 40 miles...and I don't think I hit it!
@_nikkiwolf_ - Wow, what a run you went through!! I find trail shoes easier on trails than road shoes. They have different traction patterns and also tend to have lower drop in the heels for better control on tough terrain.

@kristinegift & @instantmartian So cool that you guys got to meet each other. Loving the goodies & free beer, WHAT?!?
It was great meeting @kristinegift and I'm sure we'll be running into each other, again.
@Stoshew71 Most of the goof-off, keep-my-butt-motivated runs I do revolve around beer. Unfortunately, this year many of my favorites conflict with life/other runs. I've done the Yuengling Light Lager Jogger 5K, the Yuengling Oktoberfest 5K, Flying Fish 5K, Dogfish Head 8K, Sly Fox Fox Trot 5K, Chickie's & Pete's Boardwalk 5K (Yuengling and Crabfries at the end) and River Horse 6K. I'be done many of those more than once, and I'm probably missing one or two in there. I'll also be doing the 5,000 Yards Dash at Yards in Philadelphia this year (it's a new one). The organizations that put on many of these runs (CK Running and Great American Brewery Runs) do a great job keeping everything organized and running smoothly. Besides, beer is supposed to be good for recovery, right? haha
Not only did I get to meet @kristinegift at the race yesterday; I alao got to spend some time with friends I haven't seen in nearly a year. Needless to say, along with the great River Horse brews, we ended up hanging around until about 2:30pm (which was not in the plan), and the pale, Irish skin on my face, chest, and back of my legs currently matches the red sweatshirt I'm wearing. I was slow. I expected to be slow. I'm not a fast runner, anyway. My ability to finish almost directly in the middle of every race I run continues to astound me. If nothing else, I am consistant. My knee/ITB didn't bother me at all during the race, and that was my big concern, so all seems to be well on that front. Since I seem to be mostly injury free, and actually motivated to run this year, I might be able get myself back into some actual training to improve speed and endurance as opposed to just maintaining. Yay! Yesterday was a 6K PR for me since it was my first official 6K. So, I have that under my belt, now.3 -

Long time no update since I didn't run at all this week. Well except for the weekend.
First I did the color run yesterday with a friend that didn't train at all and she declared she hated running afterwards ) It was fun and I'm still a bit blue on the belly, even though the 5k was actually 4 km.
Today I ran for trees (call me a treehugger now) and did the short 5k. It was a small event (500 people) though there were another 200 people at 10k and 15k part. I decided to PR it and I did in 22:05, according to my watch (no official time). I came in top 20 I think and almost snagged 5th open. Small local races are fun when those damn Kenyans don't come to run alone in the front of the pack. The disadvantage to run just behind the lead pack is I ran half of the race alone ) and of course I went to fast and some people kept blocking me at the start but I forgive them since I still PR'd. I also ate way too many fruits and chocolate that they had at the finish line.
Now for the sad part. After the color run yesterday I felt a slight sting in my right knee. Nothing too bad and I figured it will go away after a good sleep. And it did. Today I ran the race just fine...until I stopped. The inside of my patella hurt like crazy. It went away after a few minutes but I can't straighten my knee or squat without pain. There goes my goal for this month, I plan to not run for 2 weeks at least (as opposed to a few years ago when I didn't listen). So I'm officially injured. At least I'll bench hard and get big pecs for girls
