If you feel like snacking drink a big glass of water! Makes you feel full until next meal. Great for times when you don't think you will make you calorie count.

Nope. Drinking water does nothing for me. I know quite a few people with the same reaction to drinking water (it doesn't fill them up). I get annoyed when people say this as if it is applicable to everyone.
I'd rather have a snack and be slightly over than be hungry and miserable.21 -
Nah, water just makes me feel less thirsty. Unless I am already full, then I feel terrible. Sooo... I just reach for the snack! XD
Except for times that I'm just bored, and want something flavorsome, like coffee. But that isn't the same thing. But, hey, if it works for you, that's pretty awesome. Sometimes I wish I had an off switch like that.4 -
I've been trying that lately, except I chug down a 1.5L bottle of water. I feel full and bloated for around 10-15 minutes, but then I'm back to where I started.
If I'm hungry, I'm hungry and no amount of water will get rid of the feeling.6 -
I think a healthy snack is sufficient. Maybe an apple alongside some water.4
-
Have something w/ a lot of fiber or protein.
Honestly my go-to is the single servings of flavored tuna. 80 calories per pack for most, 150 for a few others. Might have them w/ a few crackers, etc.3 -

.....I'd rather have a snack and be slightly over than be hungry and miserable.
OK so I understand that water may not do it for you but......
If you take this attitude everyday then you will always be "over" and weight loss would not occur. Please be mindful that when you make statements like these you are not helping anyone.
Secondly, your fat loss diet is seriously flawed if you are left feeling "hungry and miserable" between meals.1 -
I snack I make sure I save calories so I can snack in the day does you good having a little something if your hungry no point depriving yourself x1

Nope. I rarely go over my alotted calories. There are some days where I may feel hungrier than usual (more intense day at work-my days vary in intensity) and will have a snack. Was the snack planned? No, so it might result in going over by 50-100 calories that day. Perfectly fine for me since I look at the overall picture. Id rather go over for one day by 50-100 calories with an unplanned snack than be starving by meal time.

The best thing to do is to snack on some fibrous veg - I always eat brocolli, it fills me up more than water and is calorie safe.0

What's wrong with snacking? I factor 2 snacks into my eating plan, as I know I'll want to snack. I just go for healthy snacks that's all.3

You can't win here OP. You post a tip that a whole load of people don't agree with, you will get roasted.
I think people should be less sensitive. A tip is a tip, use it or don't use it! RELAX!
I think perhaps a couple of snacks need to be dished out on the forums if people are so grumpy that they have to jump down some new members throat for posting a tip without a ton of "it might not work for you" disclaimers.
She is talking about drinking water!!! She is not suggesting anyone drink gasoline after howling at the moon.
Anyhoo.16 -
There's nothing wrong with snacking << put in that smiley so you can tell I'm relaxed LOL - Those of us who do fit the snacks into our daily calories...simple!3

No one here is not relaxed.
Op posted a tip as if it were an absolute. Someone else who is new might see it as that and then wonder why it is not working for them. Nothing wrong with stating it doesn't work for all/not an absolute.

What bothered me about the OP's post is she makes it sound like snacking is wrong. Maybe wording it different would have been better, saying "if you feeling like snacking on something unhealthy or snacking will take you over your calories, or binge snacking"6 -
We can snack if we want to
We can leave no chips behind
'Cause your friends don't snack and if they don't snack
Well, they're no friends of mine
And say, we can snack, we can snack
Everything's out of control
We can snack, we can snack
They're doing it from pole to pole
We can snack, we can snack
Everybody look at your hands
We can snack, we can snack
Everybody's taking the chance
tasty snack
Oh well, the tasty snack
Ah yes, the tasty snack

Water doesn't fill me at all. I always leave some calories for snacking especially in the evenings and if I'm not hungry great but there is no way I could go hungry because I may just end up overeating junk!1
-
Water doesn't take away my hunger either. However, during moments where eating has become a habit (like eating chips by the tv), sipping from a bottle of water instead definitely helps me. Just not when I'm hungry!2

I'm not sure cutting out all the snacks is a good thing. It helps boost your metabolism to have little meals 5 times a day. My breakfast and lunch average 200 calories a meal, and my dinner is USUALLY under 400 calories. (I know it's better to eat bigger at breakfast and lighter at dinner but it doesn't work with my lifestyle) Then I have evening snacks which is usually up to 400 cals as well. Sometimes I need other snacks to get me to the next meal, then I just add a workout to my day. That or I have to cut out my glass of wine that night or reduce my pretzels.
The important thing is to budget your day. If you have a standard snack you always have, budget it in. If you are going to have trouble to meet your goal, add in a 10 minute workout. (say a fast walk around the block, or ride your bike to the store to pick up what you need for dinner) Lets not take the fun out of losing weight.
I say, eat what you like, just budget for it.1 -

Same here. If I need a snack, I'll get a snack. It's usually fruit, cheese, or hummus with pita chips/Triscuits. I just make sure it fits into my goals.2 -
I'm with the OP. Many times, a glass of water will actually tide me over nicely. I drink one, then wait at least 20 minutes. If I'm still hungry, then I eat. More times than not, I don't need to.1
-
I just factor in calories for snack/s when I pre-log in the morning.1
-
If I drink a glass of water before a meal, it helps me feel full faster, but for me, I can not replace water for a snack. My whole thing is about chewing. I rarely drink anything with calories.
May work for some though.0 -
OP, you will learn quickly how this process in the forums works! I see you have not come back to post anything else, so don't fret. We were all newbies at one point when we joined.
Read in the forums before you post and see if there is already something that exists on your topic and even read other threads just see how folks respond.
Nothing wrong with water drinking during the day it is encouraged. But a lot of MFPer's prelog for the day and that snack is already accounted for. Also drinking water does not fill you up except for the first few minutes and perhaps if your stomach is growling, water is what it really needs instead of the snack.0 -
Snacks make my world go round! I like to eat every couple of hours (as well as chugging water). Water for me just delays the inevitable by 15 minutes or so0
-
I've found it doesn't work for me, but It can't hurt to rule out thirst.0

I HAVE noticed that drinking more water helps me snack LESS. I got a cute Contigo water bottle that I enjoy drinking out of, and a whole bunch of Mio flavours that I switch up all day, and I get less peckish if I commit to drinking 750ml 3-4 times a day. It tastes like juice, which satisfies me more than plain water.
That said, I still need to snack. I factor in at least 3 snacks a day, and if I'm hungry and it won't stop, I eat another little thing. Like a cheese string or a piece of lean lunch meat. Like others in this thread, I'd rather go a tiny bit over than be uncomfortable and hungry.
I guess I'm lucky in that I have some wiggle room. I eat 1400-1600 to lose 1.5 lbs a week. I can go up to 1800 and still lose a pound if I feel extra hungry, or want to go out for drinks .0 -

Doesn't work for me. I need to periodically fast 12-18+ hours for my diabetes (a process called basal testing. Basal insulin is meant to match the amount of glucose the liver "spits out" during a period of time while in a fasting state. The entire process is hell but needs to be done if I want the most flexibility out of insulin pump therapy... which reminds me that I'm due to a new round of basal testing), and water makes me hungrier. What works best for me is sugar-free jello (high volume food that won't mess up the basal test because it doesn't contain carbs, fat, or an excessive amount of protein) and diet soda (the carbonation helps settle my stomach when I'm hungry).0 -
No thanks. I'll just feel sloshy AND hungry.2
-
Drinking water when I'm hungry only helps a bit if I was dehydrated instead.
Which happens, like, never.0
