I was wondering if it's not a good idea to drink Diet drinks if you're trying to lose weight?
I drink lots of water and the occasional black coffee but I like my diet cokes.

You're likely to spark a debate with this topic but here are my two cents: I drink a diet dr pepper most days and didn't have any problems with it affecting my weight loss. Some people have problems with diet sodas causing migraines or bloating. If you find that you're in that category, then consider avoiding them. But if they don't cause problems for you, then they're fine in moderation.6

Love my diet dr pepper. No it won't effect your weight loss.3

If you do a search on this subject, you'll see it comes up, oh, about once a day.
Personally, diet soda is a part of my repertoire. I enjoy the taste and - for me - is a good way of getting hydrated without calories.2 -

@odsgirl welcome to MFP forums. Your question about artificial sweeteners is a good one but only you will be able to answer that question in your own case based on how your body responds to the chemical cocktail in your diet drinks.
As was mentioned to you there is a lot of debate on the subject. Below proves that point. It is just a google search on "impact of diet soda". One can find support for most any view. Keep doing your own reading on the subject and most likely you will discover the right answer for your body and that is the only answer that you need because we all can be different. Best of success.

There's lots of fear-mongering concerning diet sodas in general, and artificial sweeteners in particular, including (but not limited to) diet soda being a carcinogen.
If you look behind the click-bait headlines, though, you will soon discover that these fears aren't based in accredited peer-reviewed scientific reality.
Diet soda can be a part of an overall caloric reduced diet which can be helpful in achieving weight loss. So if you enjoy it, have it. Everything in moderation is the way to go.4 -

I would say as long as it's not making you sick. I like black coffee too, & have diet sodas in the food pantry. I like the convenience of being able to drink a diet soda just to give me some carbonation and flavor on the tongue.1 -

I agree that everyone should do their own reading and research on any subject they're curious about. But I think it's important that we read and research with a critical eye and learn to evaluate our sources as we go. A generic Google seaech would be the antithesis of that, to me.8 -
-
You know, this is actually a very good question, something I have been curious about for some time.
I have heard that Diet Drinks have a list of negative affects, especially the most common sweetener which is Aspartame.
I am going to research into this, because drinking Diet Drinks instead of the full fat drinks like I have been doing will save me hundreds of calories per day.0 -

For me, in order to lose weight, it got down to wanting/needing to eat my calories instead of drinking them. And diet soda allowed me flavour without a caloric punch.3 -

"Chemical cocktail"? Your bias is showing.
OP, like Dianne, I agree that doing your own research is great. The responses you get here will vary wildly. If you have access to a University library, their databases have considerable numbers of journal articles. Some public libraries may have access, as will some professional associations. PubMed is another available resource, or Google Scholar. Whenever possible, I try to look at the actual studies that are being done, rather than the interpretation of them presented in news publications, or blogs. The person presenting the information may not fully understand the study and the implications of it.
My personal opinion... moderation. If you like a diet soda once in a while, have it.7 -
I lost over 50lbs and improved every health marker, including stabilizing a high glucose number, all while drinking diet soda3
-
Lost 121 pounds drinking diet soda now maintaining for 20 months, plus reverse my heart disease and my doctor says I'm in excellent health.
Moderation is the key here.8 -
If it makes your life easier and better than drink away!1

Being a doctor I was using the term in a scientific manner.

If I remember correctly, didn't you complete training to be an optometrist in the 80s, but not actually practice due to health reasons? I'm not trying to negate your education, but I think your statement of being a doctor, which technically true, seems a little hollow in light of the facts.
Your choice of scientific terminology has bias undertones due to not being explicated in your original post.8 -

You should know that nobody has ever used the term "chemical cocktail" to play on deep-seated fears. Ever.3 -
I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoys the diet dr. Pepper. I've heard so many opinions on this and read the pros and cons of diet soda.
I had one doctor tell me they're no good for me, I've had another doctor tell me they were great and in fact they're a good diuretic. I work with people who can't drink diet soda because of the sweeteners and the fact that it gives them headaches and yet it doesn't bother me.
I guess all I can tell you is everything is ok in moderation.0 -
My 2 cents, when I have 3 or more a day my arthritis kicks in big time and a few other minor aches and pains I have are much more painful. I've read things about it causing inflammation and for me I feel it does. I feel it also causes me to crave food but when I'm logging and paying attention I can control those cravings. I've been having one a day and that works for me.0

Most doctors know painfully little about nutrition - it's simply not a focus in med school. So they either go on to learn more on their own, or they don't.
I doubt that soda will ever be touted as a health drink. And, to be clear, I don't think anyone is saying that it is. But what *is* being said is that aspartame is very likely the most studied and researched food additive on the planet and the overwhelming conclusion is that it does no harm. Can it do so in high enough doses? Of course! But that's no different from every other thing that we consume.
Including water.
Which can be fatal if you drink enough of it.

@leelou84 welcome to MFP forums. How long after having 3 or more diet drinks a day is it before you see the big time kick in arthritis pain?
Oct 2014 I cold turkey left off sugar and all forums of all grains trying to get pain relief. I just 30 days my joint and muscle pain dropped from 7-8 levels to 2-3 and the pain is still gone but I have kept my carbs to less than 50 grams daily until yesterday.
Yesterday I started carb loading using D-Ribose, Nutritional Yeast Flakes, Marine Phytoplankton and tangerines. I am wondering how it may effect my pain levels and when. Late yesterday afternoon and several hours today I have been bush hogging fields and road sides on the old 265 MF tractor so that is a lot of body abuse and I will have to factor that into my pain levels. This morning I was getting a 0.0000 reading on my breath analyzer so I know I am out of ketosis but have not pulled a blood ketone level yet.
Clearly different people can eat/drink the same thing and have very different results/responses.0 -
I don't drink diet pop. After a lot of trial and error I determined it was giving me headaches.
I can't verify that because I don't use artificial sweetners, except for stevia.
Anyway, I don't miss diet pop. I like tea and water for between meals.0 -
I quit for soda for 3 months starting in January . The ease in pain was gradual, but definitely by the end of the 3 months the pain went from a 4 to a 1. I started drinking it for about a 3 weeks in april. I had between 3 and 5 a day, that's when the pain started back again. I stopped drinking it again for a week and the pain isn't gone but much better. For the last few days I've been having one a day and so far so good.1
-
That is interesting how fast the pain came back. Keep us updated.
With my background and living with Ankylosing Spondylitis for over 40 years I am starting to realize how few answers are out other for us that actually apply to us. It is like people say sure XXX is fine to eat or is not fine to eat/drink. Often both are totally correct as far as their body goes I expect.1 -
I have one whenever I feel like having one. Drinking it after a large meal can actually help me feel full (must be the carbonation) when I have hormonal hunger and nothing short of stuffing myself to the brim works. More than 80 lb lost like clockwork, and my bloodwork normalized. No ill effects on my weight or health.1

Everything I have ever read recommends LOTS of water for weight loss. Aside from the fact that you're ingesting chemicals- doesn't drinking soda impact your ability to drink a LOT of water?2

Soda counts towards your water intake because it's mostly water. With that said, I doubt she meant guzzling a family sized bottle of it every day.1 -

First of all- LOTS of water has nothing to do with weight loss, eating at the correct calorie deficit for you goals does.
Secondly-the first ingredient of diet soda is... Water.
And thirdly-everything we ingest is made up from chemicals.
OP, welcome to MFP-your first post hit on one of the more controversial subjects here6 -
I usualy totaly avoid sodas, but am staying at the plac eof someone with diet soda. Ive found that when I am having a sweets craving having that instead does curb it0
-
leelou84 I have similar experience, I have found that my arthritic pain dropped once I stopped drinking diet stuff and just generally lowered my carb and sugar intake. It's not low as in Ketosis low but I tend to go no higher than 120 per day on carbs.1
