Using a cleanse to get started

Hey there, I am Tef. I have along way to go. I am 253 and 5'6. I am a female. My goal is to get to 170.

To jumpstart my life change, I am using a 7 day detox cleanse. I have decided to not eat meat this week during my cleanse. I am taking in a lot of water and eating fruits, veggies, protein drinks and nuts. I am hoping that this will help to expel my waste weight. Waste weight can account for about up 20 lbs of my overall weight. This can help release toxins. After the first week, I will bed in a mild excercise regiment that will consist of mostly walking.

What are some methods that you use?

    No to the cleanse.

Yes to first changing your diet, and then adding exercise as you feel ready. I think pacing yourself is a great strategy to ease yourself into new, lifelong routines! If you do too much too fast, you might feel totally overwhelmed and just give up. These changes must feel and be achievable in order to become habits (in my view only). A cleanse is kind of like the opposite of this strategy.

There is nothing to detox in you that your liver and kidneys aren't already doing. Cleanses are a waste of time, sometimes money in the least, and at the worst can be very dangerous.

Woo doesn't work. Calories in, calories out.

    Another vote against cleanse.
Your body cleanses its self naturally.
A total waste of time and money and it is just a gimmick.
There are not quick fixes or jump starts.
Eat less calories than you burn.
Weigh, measure and log everything you eat and drink and your exercise.
    That is it.
Do it and success is yours.

Actually, your cleanse sounds like what I eat most of the time, and I totally sympathize with wanting to make a dramatic gesture to signify the start of your new life. Do what feels good to you, in a "hooray! I love myself! and I feel peaceful and happy and healthy and I'm so glad this is how I'm going to live the rest of my life" kind of way. :)

Determine your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) based on personal stats (age, sex, height, weight) and your activity level. Use Google TDEE calculator, use several calculators, take an average of the results.

Determine the daily calorie deficit required to achieve your weight loss goals in a healthy and sustainable manner.
0.5 lb/wk = 250 daily deficit (recommended if you have a small amount of weight to lose)
1.0 lb -1.5lb/wk = 500-750 daily deficit (recommended if you have 20-50 lbs to lose)
2.0 lb/wk = 1000 daily deficit (recommended if you have 50+ lbs to lose)

Subtract the deficit from the TDEE to determine your daily caloric requirement for weight loss.

The only thing I find a "cleanse" good for is altering taste buds. I went on a 14 day juice fast (mostly vegetable and never store bought juice) a few years ago and when I started chewing food again I found that I didn't like the taste of candy nearly as much. It's really a risk though cause a lot of people come out of a "cleanse" and binge on junk and gain more weight back.

Notice my use of quotation marks. I use these because your body is never actually clean. Many of the things that people think are dirty are the things that keep us alive.

The only thing that works for weight loss is eating less calories than you burn. You have to be careful with the fruit, nuts, and protein drinks too. It's easy to eat enough of that stuff to actually gain weight. Count your calories and weigh your food if you are going to try this and continue to count calories and weigh food when it's over.

There's no reason for a cleanse, unless you're talking about a shower, so by all means go for it.

The body doesn't require a cleanse. Cutting foods out is not 'cleansing' and the digestive system does't need a break. I started when I was 260lbs (at least...I weighed about 1.5 months after I started calorie counting) and am now at 175. All I did was count calories and weigh all my food. You can do this.

Name one of the toxins that you're releasing. Just name one.

Switching to a highly restrictive diet will make you to lose weight simply by causing a reduction in calories. You might as well eat what you like and count calories. The other path leads to suffering.

Aw, I feel like you're getting a bit of a hard time here. A cleanse can be a good way for you to adjust your mindset even if it doesn't strictly 'cleanse' your body. Sometimes they can kickstart your metabolism but that's mostly due to calorie deficit. Any weight you lose in the first week is likely to be water at this stage. If you're just starting out then the best thing is to look at your diet and make sure you are eating a deficit of calories - and start exercising. Good luck with it all, you'll do great!

No. "Cleanses" are total bunk. Your body doesn't hold on to waste. There is not 20 pounds of fecal matter stored in your colon. Your digestive system doesn't work like that and you risk doing more harm than good by using these things.

You also can't "kick start" or "jump start" weight loss. Here's what you do - you just start tracking your calorie intake every day. That's literally IT. No magic. No pills. You just start counting calories and you do it every day, and one day you realize that you've lost weight and haven't had to spend not one thin dime on any of Dr. Oz's ridiculous magic weight loss beans. ;)

Don't waste your money. Just count your calories.

A cleanse is just a waste of time. You'd be better spending your time working on good logging - doing MFP as intended without looking for quick weighloss gimmicks.

Not advocating the cleanse, but Elvis had about 30 pounds of feces in his impacted colon when he died. Perhaps the OP too, suffers from chronic constipation. :)

What exactly are you "cleansing" and why aren't you in a hospital?

Cleanses are fake. Sorry. Your liver filters out toxins from your blood.

Better to just get started with eating at a calorie deficit. Start finding foods you enjoy that fit into your calories, and start some exercise that feels good to you. That will make a good start!

I ate to much sugar free candy on Saturday. Tremendous cleansing occurred.

It did not help with my weight loss; I've had better luck with logging accurately and sticking with my calorie goal to achieve my loss.

9er fan here and can tell you as a professional in the fitness industry, that you DON'T need a cleanse. Whatever info you're getting from this seller of this cleanse, is NOT SUPPORTED by science.
Just start eating less and you need. That's basically it.

But it DOESN'T kickstart your metabolism. Any calorie deficit automatically reduces metabolism.
