Ice Cream alternatives?
Hello! Im doing pretty great eating clean EXCEPT ICE CREAM is my kryptonite! I reach for the pint a couple times a week and its undoing my progress. Any alts for ice cream you guys have? I've been trying frozen banana recipes, but haven't quite come across something that gives me the warm and fuzzy feeling I get from ice cream. Ha!

Look up halo top ice cream, artic zero, or enlightened bars. The best by far is halo top though!5

Breyers has portion-control 100 calorie snack cups (chocolate and vanilla). They're really small, but they're real ice cream and tasty.5

Chop a ripe banana(100 cal) Freeze it. When frozen, add to blender or blending device. Mix 2 tbls of PB fit (65 cal) with a little water or almond milk. Add 1 tbls of chocolate ovaltine (20 cal). Add 1/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk (9 calories). Blend. Tastes just like creamy ice cream and only 185 calories.12

If you get some popsicle forms from the dollar store you can freeze greek yogurt.6

Dole makes those frozen fruit tidbits .. pineapple, banana and strawberries dipped in dark chocolate. If you do protein powder you can make protein ice cream. And instead of ice cream I bought Poppies mini Chocolate Eclairs (thaw then eat) this time a round.. they are yummy.

Are you eating low fat yogurt and skimmed milk? I find these have a disastrous effect in my dieting because I don't get enough fats. Try switching to full fat milk and yogurt.
You can make your own ice cream, using natural ingredients. Don't put so much sugar in as the recipe suggests. You can also substitute cream for yogurt, or Petit Suisse cheese which is naturally lower in fat than cream.
Not all bought ice creams are equal.
If you buy ice cream, buy a small cornet of the soft ice cream (Mr Whippy) it's called in the UK. You can't binge because you can't take it home with you!
Avoid ice cream that is made with animal fats. In the UK Walls ice cream is (I think) made as a bi-product of sausage production. It's packed with pig fat.
Don't go for exotic flavours - you'll just be eating more sugar. Buy vanilla and add your own. 10gms 85% dark chocolate grated on top of a small portion of home made vanilla ice cream = calorie controlled heaven.

gelato is often lower calorie as well
one of things i did was freeze the yoplait whips and that got me thru when i was not eating ice cream
now i just include it in my calories for the day.

^^ This. I go though a half-pint to a pint of AZ or Halo Top per day. Love the mint fudge Enlightened bars are well. For an extra extra special treat, I buy Dove Chocolate covered strawberry gelato bars. 150 calories per bar.0 -

whipped cream! I too love ice cream and I have started having tiny little bowls of it with a whole lot of whipped cream. it looks decadent, tastes great, and has fewer calories. Try putting some in a bowl, add a little chocolate syrup, and dip fruit in it.0

Edy's Slow Churned Ice Creams are usually 150 cals or less per serving. Talenti Gelato (my favorite) is around 200-250 per serving depending what kind you choose.
I'm not sure why people always try to insist that frozen bananas is a good alternative to ice cream - many times the recipes are more calories than just eating a small serving of the regular stuff, and no matter how many times someone tries to insist it tastes just like the real thing, it doesn't.
OP - when you said you reach for the pint a couple times/week, are you eating more than a serving? Are you exceeding your calorie allotment because of the ice cream? Many of us have been able to be successful without giving up foods we love like ice cream, just working it into our calorie goals, but it can take practice if you have difficulty moderating your intake of those type of foods. Looking for alternatives is one strategy, but don't assume that every alternative to ice cream is better, many, as suggested above, can have as many if not more calories.
Oh and stay away from Arctic Zero. That stuff tastes like frozen cardboard.5 -

ETA: Whelp, feel free to ignore the freezing suggestion; after looking at the comments, it doesn't freeze well. But, you can mix in frozen fruit and is supposedly more like ice cream.

Blue Bunny & Breyer's both make sugar free ice creams. Bryer's makes a carb smart ice cream that has less calories as well.
Arctic Zero and Halo Top are good, but super expensive.1 -
Homemade sorbets or ice poles are easy to make and are low in calories. There are plenty of recipes on the Internet or just make one up with any fruit you like (a few mint leaves if you desire).
If you don't want to make your own 'Weis' minis (mango flavour) are under 60 calories each.0 -

Only thing that works for me to control it is buying individually portioned ice cream bars/ice cream sandwiches, and having 1 for dessert (then immediately brushing my teeth). Generally 150-200 calories. Much better than keeping something I can spoon from around- because that makes it 99% likely I will have more than 1 serving.1

Avocado! I accidentally discovered this concoction & fell in love. I was originally making avocado chocolate pie but I decided to freeze the remaining filling & it turned into perfect ice cream im talking ben & jerry style lol i mixed avocado with cocoa powder & you can do either agave nectar or sugar for sweetness.1

This is what I do also. Single servings.
I figure that I'm not going to be substituting mashed bananas, avocado or what have you forever. Substitutes won't be a lifestyle change for me. So I need to buckle down & get used to the fact that ice cream has a lot of calories. I can find room for small portions only.3 -

This. I've found I can fit 1 or 2 servings weighed out into my day, depending on the brand. Edy's (Dreyer's, depending on where you live) has a Slow Churned line with less fat and sugar than their regular line, and it's about 100-130 calories for a serving.1 -

Gelato! Talenti makes awesome gelato, I just had a 1/2 cup of key lime- amazing- for 210 cals. vs. 290 for 1/2 cup of the Ben & Jerry's I had in my freezer.0

You have the right person here to answer that question. First, freeze an ice cube tray full of skim milk. Now put 4 tablespoons of Hershey's cocoa (not the beverage kind, the old fashioned non sweet kind) in a food processor. Sprinkle with stevia or some artificial sweetener. Add 2 tablespoons of milk or leftover coffee. Put the frozen ice milk cubes in. PROCESS! I swear to anybody it is better than ice cream. Make more or less chocolate , experiment with flavors if you wish. I stick with chocolate. I used to put half a FROZEN banana in it and some instant coffee. Then I dropped the frozen banana to save calories. Please Please try it.3 -
Halotop in organic section. It's 7 grams of protein and 70 calories for a 1/2 scoop. If you manage to devour the entire pint it's only 240 calories. It's low sugar and tastes like frozen yogurt. Our kids love it too. My favorite flavors are mint chip and birthday cake.2

Manage? I've never eaten less than a pint in a sitting.3
