@skippygirlsmom - that is great that the college coach took an interest in Skip! It would be great for her (and you) if she got a running scholarship!
@HonuNui - Hope your 12 hour shift wasn't too terrible while we were stuffing ourselves with burgers, hot dogs, etc... and watching fireworks!
I managed to get out relatively early and run my SHEPower virtual HM. I certainly hope my actual HM in San Francisco at the end of the month feels better than this did. I had to stop multiple times to use the bathroom (runners distress) and by the time I was home I was absolutely exhausted. I usually don't feel that way but my legs were definitely toasted and my feet are still complaining. I'm not sure what exactly is going on but I have a little over 3 weeks to figure it out. I had my DH take the profile picture - I am smiling mostly because it felt so wonderful to sit down I tried to get Hobbes the Vizsla in the picture too since he ran it too, but someone set of a firecracker and he bolted back into the house, poor puppy.

@9voice9 Damn that's a huge race. Biggest race we have around here doesn't even come close and it's a marathon. Congratulations

...weren't you still writing your final thesis last month? Students who run must be the only students who think getting up for a 7am meeting equals "sleeping in".5 -
My target is 50 km in July. Last month I was able to run 31 km so I want to challenge myself more.

My quads hate me this morning. Trying to decide how many days to take off before starting running again. Today and tomorrow for sure, but kind of hoping my legs feel good enough for a short easy run on Thursday, but that will be a quick 3 day turn around. Feeling better about how I did yesterday, and parsing data to get an idea of how to improve my running.4

Oh boy, did I bite off more than I could chew today! I set out a bit before 7 am, and it was 73F and 95% humidity. I really should have done more like 5 miles today and done the 8 tomorrow, considering how sick I was just two days ago. But I'm stubborn/stupid. The last 2-3 miles were a real slog due to hacking every now and then, my legs feeling dead, and the oppressive humidity. But hey, at least I still got it done, right?

AWESOME job @MNLittleFinn I didn't have a doubt that you'd conquor this.My Garmin time was 1:09:45 for 6.36. It'll be a few days for the chip time. It's quite a thing to run with 60K people, but it was fun. I'll do a full report (as full as my old-man forgetful self can do) later.

@whatmerunning sounds like the weather matched the race. Glad you were feeling good enough for the 5K though
@greenolivetree when Skip would get real mucusey (is that a word) with asthma we would bowl water in a pot on the stove and then put her over to to breathe with a towel over her head, it would break it up.
Went hiking today with Skip. So an active rest day. It was a few miles of trail in a Canyon but we did so quite a bit of up and down climbing on things. She swam in a waterfall...no thanks in 50F water. Great day,

Thanks @Stoshew71 I wrote up a full report in a later post, it was a good race, and I'm glad I have my first HM under my belt. Looking forward to my September HM, where I think I'll have a better handle on how to run things.3

Still a great job. As you increase mileage, the end of a HM won't be as bad. It's normal to postive split on your first half and training miles are still young. Increase your weekly mileage and get some hill work in, and you will have plenty of strength at the end of your race to sustain that speed. Goal of this race is to finish and you did more than that.
I am also a very stuborn runner. I figured you wouldn't stay with the pacer. That pace was just way too slow for you. Congratulations!!!\

@TresaAswegan Have you taken part in previous races?
If the answer is no I would suggest you start with some 5km events - all the speed demons will be at the front of the starting pack so to prevent potential passing conflicts start near the back of the pack in front of the walkers.
Once you have completed a few 5 km events and managed to get a few longer runs ( 7-9km ) then find a 10km event. Have fun.
I have probably done around 15 5k races, so I'm pretty familiar with the format for shorter races.

Thanks. I figure I finished ahead of the 2:20 pacer so my going too fast didn't totally kill my run, but I certainly did get punished for pushing too hard in the middle. All in all, I'm pretty pleased with how I did, and It's nice to know I did something that most people have not ever done.
I'm definitely planning on putting hill repeats into my next training cycle (starts next week EEK!) so I'll be more ready for my next HM. My plan is to also try to get my long runs past 13 miles, so when I run the HM, it will actually be a shorter run than my Long runs. Add in the fact that the average high is in the upper 60s and I think the next one will work out better for me. Not necessarily faster, just feeling better.2 -

Just worry about walking for a few days. Your legs will tell you when its time.

Doing a little mapping out of how I want to train for my next HM, since I have to get into it pretty soon to be ready enough in time, to feel good about it.
Edit: Waiting for blisters to go away before I do any running

@greenolivetree I talked my husband into seeing a specialist for his asthma. He came back with a plan and several new meds. I'm not advocating for the pharmaceutical industry, but it has helped him greatly. No more hacking and wheezing.
He smoked for ages, probably 25+ years, and he has decreased lung capacity, ~80% of what it should be. The asthma can cause lung scaring so it's important to get under control. You probably know all that though.

@skippygirlsmom That trail looks GORGEOUS! I am beyond jealous.
I had a very enjoyable long run this morning, seeing as I missed my run on Sunday (due to eating way too much food when I went out for dinner) and have today off I thought 'why not!'. It was only supposed to be 8 miles instead of 10 but I got lost again, not that it mattered because I was enjoying myself so much running through the countryside. I did have to have a little walk mid-run to work out where I was, but once I was on a familiar road it was all good again. I even discovered another couple of places that would be really nice to run another time
2nd July - 6.04 miles

Finally getting around to setting up my ticker for the month. Had some pretty good runs over the weekend. Yesterday was a scheduled rest day which ended up being a nice thing because it was just a gray wet, wet day here in Ohio and I did nothing but be lazy. Got my doggie out for a couple of walks and baked some zucchini muffins. Other than that, I pretty much just lounged around and enjoyed having the day off! Hope everyone had a great weekend too!

Can I ask for opinions on which half marathon to sign up for? I think I mentioned this before but I really need to decide and I keep changing my mind. Maybe if I talk it out some more with you all I'll make a decision. Choices are:
1. Empire State Half Marathon (Oct 9) - local race, no logistical challenges, I run on the course frequently and know it well, flat, will know people running it including many of my running group, will have people to cheer me on and one person has offered to run me in the last mile or so.
2. Niagara Falls International Half marathon (Oct 30) - beautiful course ending at the falls, flat to net downhill, closed course so not a lot of spectators, don't know anyone else running the half but do know a couple of people running the full, will need a hotel (already reserved just in case) but the logistics are not bad (bus right from hotel to start). Chance of being very chilly.
This is my first half marathon and I'm looking to FINISH and show myself I can do it. I'm in a HM training group with a coach so should be ready for either one although I am no where near ready now. I feel like the Niagara Falls one will be more special and I don't mind the hotel cost, would be a mini vacation. But I'd be on my own. The local race I would feel very supported but worry that it won't feel very special, maybe even boring?

7/3 - Family day. Not starting the month so well.
7/4 - 3.82 miles on a beautiful, cool morning.
7/5 - Bodypump class, followed by 1.5 miles on indoor track.
