Anyone celibate?

Carrying on the subject of sex, is anyone celibate through choice? I've thought about it. Don't know why, as I enjoy the horizontal tango, but I sometimes wonder whether it would make life easier.... perhaps, after a while, you stop thinking about it and can devote mental energies to other stuff. Maybe I'm leaning towards some dippy zen ideology, who knows....???

I was once celibate from 1954 to 1966. I started having sex at 12. I started having sex, with a partner, at 16.11

I am not now, as I am married. However, I was for over 6 years! I had divorced my first husband by the time our son was a year old; I dated here & there for the first couple of years, but really never had the time or the desire to put any effort into a "relationship" and casual sex is just not so casual for me! Lol!
I realized that I was OK being single. I went back to school, became a nurse, had a good job, lived comfortably in a nice condo, my son attended a private school, etc...I was where I wanted to be and my focus was squarly on raising my son.
I did reconnect with my now husband (we were high school sweethearts) at our high school reunion and -obviously- that turned into something more, thus ending my celebacy. But, I can say -for me- I really did get to a point where I kind of "forgot" about sex! I think it was somewhere between six months to a year. I didn't find it odd then and I don't find it odd looking back at it! I really got to know a lot about myself in that time & am happy to report that I liked myself!

Yes I can't say it's by choice it just is. When you get married and take those vows seriously and something seriously happens it just is. I'm just glad I still have him and I'm hoping if the shoe was on the other foot he wouldn't be off looking for another wife.4

I'm waiting until I get married. I know it's somewhat unusually and I certainly don't expect my future spouse to have waited.15

The last lady I dated, which was 3 years after my divorce, we made the decision to not touch each other physically for a while. We wanted the relationship to grow mentally/emotionally/spiritually before physically. We went almost a year without getting physical. Eventually, we gave in and it was magical. I haven't had a physical relation since her passing (which was some years ago). I don't think it's by choice, but perhaps it is. I don't know.9

I was celibate for almost two years by choice, many years ago. I can honestly say it didn't make life any easier, or make problems solve themselves more clearly...my mood was not any better at that time than it is during the more sexually abundant years, actually I think I was much more on edge...lol. I've found that as I've gotten older (almost 47 now), and am in a long term relationship (23 years), sex isn't as "life or death" important anyways. We still love it, still jump each other with enthusiasm, still look forward to dates...but good sleep, talking for hours, and just hanging out together is just as paramount.11

PS. Disclaimer: I'm *not* celibate. I just thought it would be a good counterpoint to the 'Sex? Sure...' thread. For my own part, I'd like a bit more than I get, but would rather have less but of high quality, than more of lower quality. As with everything in life, a few better things are better than many mediocre ones...10

Sex is the best thing ever, but a little down time (if you're not in a relationship) does some cool Zen things to your mindset. I highly recommend it.0 -
