It's a brand new month to continue with healthy behaviours and to begin new ones.
The name of the thread is "Women Ages 50+" but all women are welcome.
How did you do with your goals or resolutions for July?

Resolutions for August
*continue sorting and discarding photos
*work in the yard 30+ minutes four days a week
*increase daily meditation time by 5 seconds every few days
*average 15,000 steps a day

So glad I found this thread! I've been on and off MFP for 3-4 years now. Making a commitment to stay with it for the long haul. I gained 25 pounds over the course of 2 years. Cholesterol and blood pressure are high too. Funny how turning 50 coincided with those things! Not THAT funny tho.
Looking for accountability to help me reach my goals this month:
1. Complete Whole 30 on August 18. Only add black beans, quinoa, and 4 servings alcohol per week. Continue no dairy and no sugar.
2. Continue logging all meals and exercise.
3. Walk 30-40 min 3x week.
4. Yoga 45 min 3x week.
5. Meditate 5-10 min 5 days per week.
6. Write in gratitude journal every day.

Charleen Outstanding! I have some prize winners inherited from my mother...I LOVE YOUR QUILTS!!!
Kim N Cal I have never used them but heard the solar powered ultrasonic thingies might work...and kitties & doggies are a good deterrent...
Cheri Thinking of you.

August goals:
Enjoy a happy, fun and healthy family vacation and stay on track.
Keep my steps above 5,000 at least five days a week.
Embrace the big 6-0.
Start doing yoga practice at home - this is the hard one.
7 -
Charleen, did you hand quilt that wonderful quilt. I admire you and those poor fingers if you did. Well, I admire you for doing it anyway.
I know some of you have read my story of when my first daughter went off to college. I had heard all the stories of how I would just cry all the way home. I was surprised that I didn't cry at all yet I do tend to hold in feelings at times. Not all the time and I can't seem to control why I do and don't. Anyway, Christina was planning on keeping her car there, we had rules about grades and her car, so her and her sister went in one car and we were in the other. Both cars were packed. She had one of those poppasom chairs and she was forever known as the girl with the satellite dish. After we got home, I couldn't stand it that I didn't know how she was doing all by herself. So the first weekend we went down there. I was shocked. Her room was clean, all laundry was done, she had friends, but the biggest thing was that she already had a boyfriend and his ring on her finger. Not engagement but high school ring. His friends say he had never seriously dated a girl so I knew this was serious. So when we went home, I DID cry almost all the way home. My girl didn't need my mothering anymore! She was grown up. So girls, just trust that you have done your best and have raised those sons to be adults
Barbie, thanks for being there for us every month.

Thank you! I'm new here (1st week) and 51 and feeling awful on how I let myself turn into this.
So, I love the positive attitudes!
August goals:
Enjoy 5 day trip to Florida ...even though the plane ride will be awful - seats too tight currently
Exercise in pool at least 15 minutes 5 days a week.
Watch the protein and fat contents in food and stay on track.
Cut down to 1 caffeine drink a day.
Loose 5#
Good luck everyone!12 -
Barbie: Thank you for the August thread.
Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome home and good wishes for our trip. You are all the best, both as a group and as individual women. :flowerforyou:
Karen and I talked about getting together while we were in VA but we both had full schedules and family obligations. Maybe another time we'll be lucky enough to meet in person. It will likely be quite a while before we head that way again, but you never know.
July Resolutions & comments:
1. Log every bite and swallow.
I logged everything to the best of my ability. Portion sizes were best guesstimates.
2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week. Work on flexibility and back strength.
Done. While were were with DS and DDIL I even had a pilates lesson. It felt wonderful. We have plans to try to
do this weekly over the internet. They will be travelling, and we have some technology challenges to figure out,
so we'll begin when the time is available.
4. Have fun every day.
Done! Smithsonian, Flight Museum, Montecello, Michie Tavern, Herndon Friday night concert . . .
5. Drink at least three glasses of water daily, preferably more!
Done. I'm even starting to like it.
6. Monitor sleep. Try to average 7 or more hours of sleep nightly.
Sleep was good during our visit. We did not get over tired. The trip home was another story
and we are really tired today.

Hi Karen. Eight weeks (and a lifetime) on Tuesday. Have you used the tracking approach before? For me, it's been the only thing that has ever worked. When I do it, I eat less and better, I move more, I feel good, and I lose pounds, inches and sizes. There are lots of good tips here, and the tracker and its database are awesome. You can do this! Decided to do an hour of a Pilates for Inflexible People. What I like about this DVD is for one thing the cueing is very good and for another thing there are lots of options for different timed programs. The plan for tomorrow is to do another section of a 10 Minute Yoga DVD, do some bicycles for the abs, then go to the extremepump class. This is the last time Vince has to take me!!!! I'm sure he's thrilled that he doesn't have to get up early.
spikeyhair - my heart goes out to your DGD
NYKaren - how well I remember taking Jess to college the first time! Do you know that after leaving her I went to a church near there and said a little prayer for her? I totally understand how you feel. I cried, too. Does your hubby know how you feel and why you don't want to drive? And just wait till they get home at the end of the semester! Suddenly you'll have so much "stuff" in your house. And that's nothing compared to what you're asked to "store" for them when they're older
barbie - I have a problem where I tend to get plantar's warts. So for that reason I almost never go barefoot. Vince has laughed at me because even in a hotel, I always wear something (even those flip-flop things) on my feet. And you'd never catch me barefoot at the gym. I even try my absolute hardest not to put my foot down on the bare floor when I'm getting dressed. Yes, I know that it would only be for a second. But I try my absolute hardest not to let that second happen. I just got a pair of shoes in a wide width and the problem is that my feet kept slipping out of them so I returned them to the store. I don't know if that would happen with sneakers since you tie the sneakers. I can certainly give it a try. I really don't like those shoes with pointy toes, I'd much rather have room in the shoes for my toes. But the style right now is pointy toe. Even around the house I usually wear slippers with supports in them.
Karen E - even tho I had those cravings yesterday, I managed to stay under calories (just barely)
jpsgirl - welcome! Congrats on losing even tho you were away. Loved the flowers, thanks for sharing them.
Karen in VA - what a wonderful thing to have done with your mom!
Charleen - breathtaking quilt. Is that hand quilted or machine? What does the long arm quilter do? I only remember my aunt quilting. I don't think I could exercise 150 minutes/day. I usually get in about 60
pip - what a ride for the month! Kirby sure is a wonder man
Joyce - you take such good care of charlie. I'm sure he appreciates it deep inside
Charleen - you sure know how to take my breath away. I'm in awe!
Rori - I'm jealous that you get to meet so many MFP members. Have fun!
DJ - I think the worst part of Jess gaining weight is the fact that I know that there's nothing I can do -- she has to want to lose it. It's also sad because I know how hard it is going to be to get it off. Like for dinner Vince grilled hamburgers (mainly because I wanted extras to freeze for him to have another time). Well, Jess had 1-1/2 cheeseburgers. Eliminating the cheese would have helped a little, but what can I say?
Cut the grass today. Vince did under the power lines and the front yard. He figures he'll probably do the backyard Tuesday. I used the self-propelled mower, then the weedwacker. Did some sweeping. Just realized that I didn't sweep one area, will have to look to see if it needs it or not.
Janet in TX and Karenz - welcome!

WITNESSING, yo!
August? What? How?
I haven't even thought about goals. I'm back on track after struggling for a couple weeks...first the exercise got hit-or-miss, then I broke my ketosis. Of course, I had a migraine...
Goal Number 1: figure out more concrete goals!
I took Sonja out for brand-new wheels, and a ride, today...that's her resting against my leg. It was opined that we made an interesting picture, and I guess I didn't argue.
Tomorrow, back to work! and hopefully, a good workout. Definitely a couple walks...
Edit: Smaller version of the photo...

Hello Delectable Dames;
You all are so good about having goals… I have only one goal… to keep on doing what I am doing. So, for August my goals are:
1) To not be laid off from work
2) To keep on logging my food every day
3) To keep on exercising every day
Now, if I lose weight – and seriously, how could I not? – I will be pleased – but, I am not going to get all riled if the scales do not cooperate. What I am doing is not about changing a number on the scale, but about changing the shape of my body and the way I live my life. So, fingers crossed, nothing exciting happens to me, any time, soon. I find that so long as I can maintain the status quo, this is not that difficult. I am humbled by those of you who manage to keep on doing the right things in the face of adversity, illness and loss.
(((((((((((((((((((((((((((
Pip – you crack me up! And Kirby is adorable… They are so cute when they are sleeping. And gratz on the challenge finally be over… we hope.
Charleen – Marvelous quilts! And you are so sweet to make the quilt for the OS… You are completely correct… older sisters need to feel special, too.
April – Welcome! I imagine it would be harder to be more or less healthy all your life and then suddenly find yourself fat… for me, when I turned 40 was when I finally got it together. I had spent my whole life as “the fat girl.” It wasn’t until I started to feel my mortality that I really snapped out of it and make a change. This is a great place to be… we are here for you.
Becca – thank you. Your goal weight is just that… YOUR goal. Forget the doctor’s goal, or the insurance companies… I had the same initial goal weight as you – 200 – but have recently changed it because I have decided I want to be half the woman I was… Now my goal weight is 183 – half my highest weight. And Becca – I WITNESS THIS!
Carol – Thank you. Is there any end in sight on the rental house? Good luck with all that.
Joyce – Thank you. Hugs for you, Hon. Hopefully, that genetic fun will skip a generation. And Joyce, your girl will ALWAYS need her mother – just not the same way. Take it from a girl who still needs her mother at 51.
Allison – I assume the dogs survived the trip? *grins* Glad you had a good time. I am with Barbie… I hope someday you have your cottage by the sea, and all the peace and pleasure that go with it.
LisaAnne – Welcome!
Heather – your family is gorgeous. I love the Pokemon pictures… Good job on skipping the alcohol… Gold Star for you!
Kim – Thank you… And I am glad your garden has a chance against the bunnies and the birds. It’s nice that the two can coexist. I am rather fond of bunnies… but, I am more fond of my garden vegetables!
Karen/VA – your Mom sounds like a wonderful woman. ((Hugs!))
NYKaren – glad DH is going to rent the car. I wouldn’t want you to have an accident trying to see through your tears on the roadway coming home! And take heart… you know you have done everything in your power to raise that girl right. She will be just fine.
JPS Girl/Leigh – Welcome, and thanks for the flowers. :] And I am with you… Logging and eating low carb are the ONLY things that have ever worked for me.
KarenE – Thank you. And it must have been something in the water, yesterday… I ended up having a giant burrito for dinner. I didn’t go over my daily goal = but it was a near thing. Since my calorie goal is very generous, that means I ate a LOT. But Kudos to you on the exercise! Keep it up.
Margaret – Thank you.
KJ – Thank you… Yeah, Denial… just call me Cleo. I feel ya on the speeding ticket… we don’t have to take classes here, but we do have to pay for the nose for Deferred Adjudication… oh, and I am still laughing about you “sleeping in” until 6:00. That’s AM, right? That is sleeping in? Sheesh!
Lisa/W.TX – you hit ‘Gentle Humor” right on the nail. The toast idea is cute. Gratz on making your goal. I could probably use “be lighter” as my goal, too. Not putting any huge pressure on myself… I figure I get enough of that from the rest of my life. Just trying to do what I know I should do so I can be healthier.
Spikeyhair – Welcome! So sorry about your DGD.
Michele – thank you. Yes… I was actually kind of shocked by how much difference there is between 260 and 243. I can’t wait to see what 220 looks like. So, what do you do with your purple potatoes? Anything special? Or do you just use them like any old potato? I have never tried them.
Katanthus – Welcome!
Cheri – I hope you have the easiest move ever!
DJ – Thank you. Hope you and DH had a marvelous time at the beach!
Beth – We will remind you, for sure. And you know you raised your DS right… He will be just fine.
Barbie – Our own Dancing Queen… It sounds like your exercise is a lot more fun than mine. Of course, I like being able to go whenever I want – so, I will take the monotony in order to keep the flexible times. Thank you so much for keeping this thread going.
Larisa – you are a legend at your gym? Do tell… lol. Nice pic. You named your board? I never did get the skateboard under control.. so I am in awe.
Katla – Thank you. And isn’t it always great to be home? No matter how much fun you had, home is always a relief.
Mary – Thank you.
Summer – Thank you, and Welcome!
Chris – Hello!
Carrie – Thank you.
Miriam - *waves* I am a cat person, too. Don’t have any cats right now – DH was so heartbroken when his cat died, we haven’t gotten another. He doesn’t think he could stand another loss.
Meg – I hope you manage to get Benny’s meds down.
Betty – Thank you. Sorry about the deer eating your flowers.
Lenora – I am not a country girl, either… *ick* Mold is bad.
Janet/OKC – so jealous of the squats… someday, I will get my knees fixed, too.
Janet/TX – Welcome. Another Texas gal. Whoot!
KarenZ – Welcome!
SoCal Runner – Welcome!
)))))))))))))))))))))))
Wow – so many wonderful women, all in one place. Are we lucky, or what?
Here’s to another great month, my Beauties… *raises her glass of iced tea*
Hugs for everybody!

Good morning. Woke up early, so came downstairs to talk to you lot on this 1st August. It's actually my ex's birthday and I did send him a card this year as he has been ill and had an operation. He won't see the card until he gets back from New Orleans. His wife is a huge blues fan and plays the harmonica. They have taken their two teen kids.
Missing the grandkids already. This week I have my yoga friend coming to the house tomorrow for a yoga session and then DH has four days of cricket watching, plus a one day game on Tuesday, so I will be on my own a lot. And you all know that is a challenge for me. The fridge starts its siren call. I hope to get some writing done.
Barbie - Thank you so much for continuing to point us in the right direction. :flowerforyou:
Katla - If you are anything like us, you will continue to talk about your trip for ever!
Charlene - Fabulous quilts! I am so in awe.
Welcome to the new people. Slow but sure does it! Faithful logging and moving more! I don't believe in fancy diets, unless you have a medical condition, but I would like to put in a word for vegetables. Heap them on your plate! Especially green ones. Last night we had chard and runner beans from the garden and some frozen broad beans. Plus 4oz lamb. I allowed myself 75 extra calories for an olive oil and lemon juice dressing with garden herbs.
On the whole I feel better and find it easier to keep to my generous allowance if I keep carbs low, but I am not fanatical about it. At DS's house I eat more carbs because my usual foods are not available, but I did extremely well only having a taste of the fabulous focaccia and no cheesecake for dessert. I had three slices of mango.
Will have another alcohol free day today.
So , my only goal for August is to drink no more than 14 units a week.
Everything else is going along fine and I'm enjoying using the kettlebell. I want to lose two and a half pounds eventually, but there is no rush.
My swim outfit arrived yesterday and it fits well. That's a relief as it's Asian sizing. X L . The top and stripe on the leg are not exactly the same pattern, but they are in the same colourway, so look fine. I won't be on a catwalk, but snorkeling in the sea or a lake. It will save me having to lather myself with sun cream and I will be able to swim in the middle of the day. I can also swim in my new beach shoes so I'm all set for next January. (I'm going to Mexico)
Must take DH a cup of tea.
Heather, hoping for some rain tonight for the garden.4 -
