August Goals:
- 120 miles
- 10 days over 10,000 steps
- Be up to date with all the organizations I volunteer with
- Be up to date on company books
- Organize personal papers and get pension papers in order
A bit ambitious I know but there are deadlines looming in September and as I am retired there should be no reason why I should have to pull all nighters to complete projects....
Oh have no fear - there is fun in all this... Golfing Wednesday with a friend... Shopping trip to the city with a girlfriend... and walking every morning with my dog.

Melanie - I do it one of two ways, I either log all ingredients in the recipe part, if it’s a recipe I’ll use frequently or if it is something I’m just throwing together I’ll weigh or measure each thing as it goes in and list them each… either way works

Karen NY – isn’t it neat to be able to see what the problem is? It feels like there is a way to fix it if you can figure out the issue.
Mary and Karen – I am pretty sure I am doing the kettleball swings right, but if you remember I have done them first with no weight, now with 1 pound, and some days even straightening my arm completely or stretching it to reach for something is painful, no where as bad as it was when I did it 6 months ago but still lingering. I am right handed so it is my dominate arm, and really it is the stretch and/or twisting that makes it hurt. If I could have done 3 weeks of resting it that would have probably helped with the healing, but 3 weeks without work would have been dire. So at this point I am not looking at it as an exercise, but more of a PT – however I do think that just the movement has made my gluts a bit more perky…
Well off to a garden…

Susie, we are delighted to have you become part of our friendly community....you have quite a challenge with your husband so far away...the exact opposite of my challenge which is that my husband had surgery a month ago and is with me 24/7 and I have no time by myself.

Hello wonderful ladies!
I have been lurking reading all your great posts. I have an 8 pound kettle ball, but had a really bad episode with back this last year and was reluctant to give it another try, however, as have been getting a bit stronger at the gym and cardio fit class, am going to start swinging. Have instructions. I hope to work up to Mary's speed some day!
Janetr okc - like your resolution to stop eating at night - my struggle as well

Was down emotionally yesterday - weight was up and am trying really hard not to let a number effect me, but at times it's discouraging. Still kept up with my goals and put in over 8k steps - small number for some of you guys, but a big one for me! I figure if I keep going to gym, walk a lot, and track eating to stay as healthy eating as I can, it will come off. Patience, patience, patience.

Hi everyone. I just cannot figure out how to get in here on a regular basis anymore! Last week I did get 5 hours of exercise in but didn't lose a single pound. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I am so disappointed. I did figure out a way to give Benny's meds (at least for now). Apricot jam sandwich on King's Hawaiian bread rolls. I better not tell you how much he likes them because that will jinx it!
We got an inch of rain last night and more is on the way. Tonight I have to get as much done on our taxes as possible; poor DD#2; I hope she can still get her student loan! We are such slogs!

Carrie in Coastal SC & Newbies: Welcome! We all start where we are. Tracking our food and beverages helps us to see what we've been doing and make healthy changes. This will not be a quick fix, but you can transform yourself and your life if you are persistent and patient. :flowerforyou:
We are back from our epic journey to Virginia and are having a quiet day at home. Yesterday was spent taking care of business and getting some fresh food. I did get to yoga, but the teacher didn't show up. One of my fellow students stepped up and led us. She did very well. I enjoyed being with the group and discovered that I was not up to my usual level with yoga moves. Two weeks was a long time to be away. My weight is still up a pound or two, but within my safety zone below the original goal. :grumble:
We learned a few travel lessons on this trip:
Lesson #1: Checked luggage is a pain. Try to get by with only a carry on if possible.
Lesson #2: Ginger works very well to combat motion sickness & doesn't rot my brain. I took a daily capsule and also had ginger gum. Other motion sickness remedies are on a list of things that contribute to the development of Alzheimers that I found on the internet. There will be no more Dramamine or similar medicines for me. Heather- I hope your hips improve! Supposedly movement is good for stiffness and arthritis.

My toe is still sore but not screaming at me anymore! I'm on the road all day so I don't have to walk on it.

Lisa, what a dreadful story! Yuck! But stories like that need to be in the media so society can take steps to minimize their occurrence. Thank you for your part in writing about them.
Kim, please take it easy with that arm. I'm glad you have a friend who does PT. In the past I've repeatedly injured myself by doing things I shouldn't. I'm now very careful to stop at the first sign of pain (as opposed to muscle fatigue).
On a lunch break from work. Did 21 minutes of elliptical plus
Kettlebell: 10 x 12 x 15
Squats: 3 x 15, plus 3 x 15 x15

Thank you for this thread. I've tried the forums off and on over the time I've been on MFP. However, I'm not consistent about checking them regularly.
My name is Susan, I'm 52. I've been making changes over the past two years which have resulted in 40 pounds lost which stayed lost. But, I have another 40 to go. And, I need a jump start. I'm going to the beach for a month beginning Friday; and, it seems like a good place to begin again.
So...August goals: 1) track, everything 2) walk daily on the beach at least 30 minutes BEFORE I swim 3) no chips or candy in the condo!! 4) one alcoholic drink per day (not 3!!) 5) increase water consumption to 80 oz., 10 cups instead of 8
There may be more, but that seems like a good start.
I read an article recently regarding sustained weight loss and the most successful losers had nutrition support of some kind. I think the forums would be a help in this regard. I was particularly attracted to this thread because its goal oriented! I like that focus. Another goal of mine is to check in here once daily. Reading your positive posts make me smile and motivate me. Thanks!5 -

This looks like an awesome thread and I look forward to keeping on track with all of you. I am 52 years old, the same number of pounds overweight, and ready to make some positive life changes.
My goals for August include:
1- Alcohol free for 31 days. It is too much of a habit to reach for a glass to celebrate, relax, whatever. I want to break the habit and make having a drink a more conscious choice. Also reducing the calories won't hurt. LOL
2- Lose 10 pounds
3-Regular exercise at least 4 days per week, even if it is just a short walk.
4-Practice my singing 5 days per week. I feel so happy when I sing. I just need to get myself started.
5- I commit to cultivating a positive attitude and to do my best to create and maintian harmony in my home. There are stressful things happening and I want to do my utmost to handle them with grace.

August goals. Weigh less. Run 80 miles.
Had to say no to a relative about co-signing a loan. Talked budget with them and they had no clue how much their expenses were. It was eye opening for them. Plus the loan was 11%!!!!! Crazy. Hopefully they will take my advice of debt reduction and saving first. I hate to be the big no but they really needed a gentle dose of reality. At least we parted still on good terms.5 -

Well ladies, tennis again with the teenager went well this morning. I have realized that I can play, but need breaks now and then. Pretty much can play 15 min. then I need a couple minutes break... We played for 50-60 minutes, and all my muscles are talking in complete sentences to my body... Ugh... Bayer Back & Body is my savior.

Hello, Merry Matrons!
You know… I was whining a bit on my home page the other day because for the 2nd week in a row, I had to post a gain on the weekly challenge stats.
Mind you – it’s just because I am all puffy. When the scale moves wildly from day to day and my stinking SOCKS have a muffin top, it is fairly clear that it’s water retention that is causing my woes – but I was somewhat flabbergasted by one attempt at helpful advice that I received.
I was advised to eat more vegetables and to reduce my intake of high sugar fruit, yogurt with fruit, sodium and fat. Now – I can get behind the sodium and fat – as I have mentioned before, I have been paying little attention to those things and I know at some point I will probably have to make some adjustment to those - sodium especially, as the Puffy Princess.
But, high-sugar fruit? I had a cup of grapes. Not a pound of grapes – not even a cup of grapes every day for the last month = a cup of grapes. And a half cup the night before. I bought grapes at the store… you have to eat them before they rot. It’s FRUIT, it’s good for me.
And the idea that I would give up my 80 calorie, NON-FAT Greek yogurt is patently ridiculous. Why in God’s green Earth would I even think to do so? It’s probably the healthiest and most “diet” food that I eat. So, according to this person, I should be eating plain vegetables and lean protein and nothing else. Literally, nothing else.
This person was trying to help, I am sure – and I am sure she has seen a more dramatic loss than I have – but, I am sorry, people. I just can’t do it that way. I have done all that before… Ate like a monk, lost the weight – and then gained it all back the second I went back to eating “normally” - with interest.
My whole goal in being here, now, is to learn a new “Normal” way to eat. To eat less of the less healthy things, more of the good, and to keep the total caloric intake below what it takes to keep my body-machine running. To eat in such a way that I never have to “go off” of it. And for me, “Normal” is always going to include a little fruit, some real butter and some full fat cheese.
Could I eat more veggies? Sure. Could I lower my fat intake? Easily – at least some. But I know myself better than to try and go on that hard-core, deprivation trail. If I have learned nothing else in my 51 years of living – most of which I have spent on some sort of a “diet” – it’s that diets don’t work…. at least not for me. I am spoiled. If you tell me I can’t have something - just watch me prove you wrong. I make it a point never to tell myself that I CAN’T have anything.
I haven’t indulged in that Cinnabon, yet… but, by golly, it’s still on the table – for a day when I have saved up enough calories to be able to eat one without blowing my calorie goal. Because that is a “normal” that I can live with.
So, I will give myself the advice that I know is true… I have to be patient. I have to keep moving, and I have to keep my calories under goal. That is ALL that I have to do. If I change anything – it will be to make changes in my exercise routine – increase the intensity, add strength training, just vary the movement.
And Rant over… lol. Thanks for listening...

We live on the Olympic Peninsula west of Seattle so we're a long way from Colville. We have traveled a lot in Washington and found beauty all over the state. My husband is still not driving so the only way he gets anywhere is if I drive him there. He is recovering steadily and is able to do more chores around the house and walk more but he still can't walk the dogs.
