Had a few drinks last night so my run was a couple of hours later this morning. Delighted to have made it out even if it was hot - the previous version of me would never have exercised after drinking.
This is definitely my crowd, self professed geeks, no coordination at other sports and live a good funny! Totally inspired by @MobyCarp and all you others starting later in life, doing mega distances, fighting back after illness/injury. Make it all seem possible for newer comers like me.
At @ereck44 you are giving me a sense of foreboding- I have osteopenia, was grossly overweight (so good to say that in past tense!) and now I am running! Better book me in for my new joints now
@Amandajs232 Osteopenia, really? I am glad that you got your weight under control. The people who I was writing about waited too late. The human body is amazingly resilient and can reverse a lot of damage that we put on it except if it as the "point of no return", i.e. liver damage, emphysema, etc. You are so young that by the time it may become a problem, there will already be a cure for it....medical science is growing by leaps and bounds.1 -

@ereck44 at 38 "you are so young" made my day! Yeah I broke a variety of bones in a short space of time so got a sent for a dexa scan. Other than "try not to fall and get as much naturally occurring calcium" as possible it doesn't affect me at all. Been told it will likely become osteoporosis in 10-20 years so I will worry about it then.

Longest run in a while. Ran/walked 6.3 miles with my dog Hugo. Was supposed to stay in Zone 2 which wasn't happening, even with walking in an effort to get it down. Was in Z3 and Z4 the majority of the time.

Walked the Colour Vibe course this morning, 4.5 kms! Pic to come later when I get onto my desktop.

Nominal Challenge Goal – 200 miles
Real Goals: Survive last month before retirement. Train as well as possible toward Rochester Marathon. Avoid putting myself back on the couch.
Today's notes – It wasn't all that warm at 7 AM, about 70º F (21º C). But I had to chuckle when one of the coaches warned the group that the humidity was deceptive. No, it wasn't. The humidity was right there in our faces, nothing deceptive about it!
Today Jim and I set out to pace 14 miles at 8:30, with my buddy Young Jeff and marathon trainee Mark. I was really impressed when Jim demonstrated sufficient hand-eye coordination to take a mid-run selfie of the group:
Mendon has a lot of hills, which was much of the point of the route today. Add in the humidity, and running at an easy pace is a bit more challenging than it would be in ideal weather; but the hills were still nowhere near as challenging as they are at race pace. Yes, I know this for a fact; the 14 miles included the entire route of the Spring Forward 15K and part of the route of the Resolution Run 7.5 mile. This is familiar territory, both for training and for racing.
Young Jeff was easily the runner who needed the slowest pace, so we let him set the pace. Of course, he was running about 8:15 (as compared to the nominal target of 8:30). This feels natural to me, as I've run with Jeff many times. The surprise was when Jeff decided he needed to slow to a walk around mile 7. We did see him again around mile 10, when he was on the way out and we were on the way back of an out and back.
Jim dropped off at 11 miles. He's limiting distance because he's reverse tapering from the Lake Placid Iron Man, and pointing at a sprint Tri in a week or two. That left Mark and me for the last 3. We had a nice chat, and I didn't pay attention to the watch; we ended up running the last 3 close to an 8:00 pace. I don't feel terribly bad about that, because I saw Mark's 2 mile time trial. He can handle 8:00 as an easy pace. If anything, he's a little faster than I am.
That brings the training week in at 47.43 miles, and I don't feel like I'm very beat up. That's a Good Thing. A week from today, I have a 5K. I'm having trouble getting motivated for it, but I expect motivation will materialize out of thin air on race day. It remains to be seen how well I can run a short, fast race given that my training has been focused first on injury recovery and then on building a base for a marathon.
On a different subject, there were some posts of stickers here earlier. I've never been much of a sticker kind of guy, and I mostly thought they just messed up the appearance of your car. A few weeks ago, I got to thinking. I drive a small silver sedan that looks like lots of other small silver sedans. Maybe putting a sticker on the trunk would help me find it in parking lots. As it happened, I had a "free" sticker from a race I ran earlier this year. So I put it on the trunk:
There are still an awful lot of small silver sedans that look a lot like mine, but there aren't very many that have a sticker that looks like this. Then today I saw the stickers from 2013 and 2015 on an SUV in the parking lot. They're better looking stickers than the 2016 that I have. Oh, well. Maybe the 2017 sticker will be more attractive.

I have to comment on the lady who commented that running ruined her knees. I worked on an orthopedic unit off and on for the last 8 years, and most people who needed knee replacements or hip replacements were grossly overweight or morbidly obese and the wear and tear of the extra weight on the joints wears down those joints. Other reasons are osteopenia, osteoarthritis, and other bone diseases. Maybe saw one person having a replacement due to sports or athletic exercises. My experience is in the hospital, not a sports facility----I know that a lot of professional athletes have to get scoped for ACL, MCL repairs.

Not fair - we are all supposed to look awful in our running pics!
I discovered running at 52. Biking at 53. Weight lifting at 52 also. Now one of my cycling friends is trying to convince me to join in her a triathalon. Thing is I don't want to swim in lakes with gators! So she said we will do one in Pensacola where there are no gators. Then a teacher at school told me he did that one and he came out covered in jellyfish. He got stung the whole time. NO! Hell no! I freak out on an ant bite, so a jellyfish sting would just put me over the edge. I guess I might swim really fast though.

Met a running buddy for an 11 mile run this morning, which was very manageable given the temperature, although the humidity at first was a bit thick.
On the run, I ended up letting her try my watch (garmin 225) and noticed that her HR was about 35 beats above mine for the run. I wasn't surprised as much that she could sustain the pace that long given the amount she runs (45-50 miles/week) but given our runs seem to border on therapy sessions with lots of taking, I was surprised that it was as easy of a conversational pace for her at that rate (as she was around 150 at an 11 pace on a hilly course, while I was averaging about 115). Regardless, I think she is now hooked, and may grab one of her own.

@kristinegift As a Northern Canadian I can relate to the Winter Olympic Events more than the summer - except for the swimming, running and biking ( Open road or Mountain Bike not the Banked Track events )
10km today, 2.5 up hill out of the River Valley, 2.5 on top Turn and head back. Coming down the hill I could hear the Train Whistle - managed to get across the track about 2-3 minutes ahead of the train. Otherwise it would be 30-50 minutes standing and watching the cars crawl by going up the hill.

@Ohhim Ha I average around 146 on easy runs. I have a friend that averages 130. I wouldn't dream to average 115. For me that is like a decisive walk pace. My max is 200

@Amandajs232 @ereck44 Most people feel fine being overweight because they are young and the body can take the abuse. Almost all people that I know that disregard their bodies and reached the age of 40 are being hit with a hammer from all sides. It all comes crashing down. The body can't keep up so you start getting knee problems, back pain just to name the mild afflictions. Sure you can turn it around but it's not a good idea to let it get there in the last place. We had a guy here that was told by his doctor at 65 that his heart was a mess and if he didn't do a change he would die. He started running. He died at at 95 last year. Hit by a truck. He ran for 30 years and was doing mountain marathons at the age of 80 with no problems (he didn't like flat races). Most people can't walk at that age.

@mom3over40 - Yes, I believe Strava rounds individual runs down to the nearest tenth, so that a run Garmin records as 5.16 miles shows up on Strava as 5.1. (Just looked through my history to find one that should have rounded up.) Now that you made me look, it looks like Strava keeps the fractions internally. The sum of my Strava dailies this week is 39.7, but it shows a weekly total of 39.8. Adding the 2 decimal numbers from Garmin gives me 39.83. And yes, I populate Strava with an automatic feed from Garmin.3

I did my treadmill speed work yesterday evening. I had been dreading the workout all day (tip: speedwork is best done before you have any time to dread it!) but it turned out to be a pretty good workout. I previously did my 1 minute high intensity intervals @ 9mph on the treadmill. Yesterday, these intervals seemed surprisingly easy at that pace. I was questioning whether my HR was even approaching zone 5 in 1 minute intervals. Since I am a little skeptical of my treadmill's stability at higher speeds, I was hesitant to turn it up too much. Instead, I extended my intervals by 15 seconds. I'm not saying it wasn't a great workout, it was. Just surprisingly easier than I remembered, so I think I might be making gains in that area. I always have a harder time with shorter and faster, so I was very happy to see this.
This weekend's plan called for 80 minutes today and 10 miles with speed play (1st quarter of every mile in zone 3) tomorrow. I typically like to get my long run done on Saturday, but I also wanted to meet up with the running group but that makes the speed work a challenge. Since it was still pretty humid this morning but is supposed to be perfect tomorrow, I decided to meet the group and delay my long run. I ended up running 10 today because the girl I have been running with lately wanted 10. It was a slow run, but that's probably a good thing. She says I help push her in the heat, so she was grateful, which makes me feel good. It was a nice run.
@MobyCarp -Love the sticker! I have never seen a Boston Marathon sticker before. I hope I can earn one for 2017!6 -

Yes, that's right. 70 miles. I had one week earlier this summer that was 70 and this week was closer to 71. So yeah, it's a PR (just barely) on weekly mileage. More important, I registered 3855 feet of elevation gain this week (most of it from today) which I believe is a PR for weekly elevation gain for me. If not, it's pretty darn close.
One more thing, I did today's (almost) 21 miler in in 3:20:02. If I did my 26.2 in that time this December, then I qualify for Boston. And today's run had a ton of elevation gain (3260 according to strava). RCM has a little over 400 ft elevation gain.9 -
@Stoshew71 You are making such crazy progress this year. After this summer conditioning, you're going to smash it in December! I'm in awe of your mileage these days.6

Took a rest day today. Skip had a little 2 miler this morning at the local Fleet Feet so we pushed our long run out until tomorrow. She ran great, but we thought it was a 5K so she was surprised when they headed back to the finish line. She ran a 14:38 and I think was the 3rd girl in. It's was very informal the results were by bib number and everyone was a male lol. Of course she came home with new spikes but with 20% Off and my $25 loyal customer money I couldn't resist.5 -

Overview:
Reeeeal slow and easy 13 miles (plus a tiny bit extra to make it an even half!), followed by a nice long ice bath. Something weird is happening because I’m actually starting to enjoy the ice baths? Especially since I overslept today, which meant starting at 10am and running in 82+ degrees and direct sunlight. Lets just say I was really really hot by the time I got back home
Anyways, kept it extra easy because it’s a cut back week and I’m registered for a 10k tomorrow. Not sure yet what my race strategy will be; I should keep it easy and fun (which has been my plan all along) but of course the competitive side of me wants to go all out! There’s no way I could PR though because I’ve traded a lot of my speed for distance -_-

Thanks @skippygirlsmom Actually it wasn't too bad. The weather cooperated very well. It was pretty much cloudy all morning which kept it cooler than other weekends. I was the first one done that actually completed 2.5.
The Firecracker Chase up in TN was the suckiest run this year for me.

I had the WORST start to my 12 mile run this morning... cramping, sore legs, sides burning... but with a quick encouragement from my husband, I pushed through it, and finally got into my running groove. So thankful for runs like today that teach me how to persevere through hard runs and cherish the ones that come easy.

Today's notes: went for a 13.11 jog/walk with my mom. The course for my September HM is definitely hillier than the other routes I've been on. That said, total elevation (according to Strava and GC) isn't much more if any, than my other runs. Difference is that most of my runs have 1 or 2 big hills that cover the bulk of the elevation, and the September HM has it spread out throughout the whole run.
At this point (7 weeks out) I'm not sure I can run it in 2:00:00, but with a few weeks more training, and weather that's going to be a lot cooler, I am hoping I'll be in the position to go for it, as the other option is to be running w/o a pacer to folloew.5
