@ddmom0811 Mine was the opposite. Swimming was the first exercise I added to my life on the recommendation of my Physio-Therapist. Since I grew up around "Non Swimmable Swamp Water " I never learned to swim growing up. Took Adult Learn to Swim at the local pool 3 years ago. 9-10 months later I found out the Pool closes in September for a Maintenance Cycle. I knew I needed to find a exercise to replace my pool miles. It was to dark/dangerous to ride a bike before or after work so I started running - very slowly and poorly. When the pool re-opened I kept running on the weekend during the early morning. The next summer one of the regular swimmers in the pool challenged me to the local Sprint Triathlon, 750m Swim, 20km Bike and 5km run. That is where I got Hooked on the challenge of Triathlons. Still doing the Sprints as they are enough of a challenge. Since the swim happens in the pool no danger of gators or jellyfish.
Now I log about 200km a year of swimming.
@sunkisd1105 A treadmill ( dreadmill ) Mile is better than EasyChair/Sofa Surfing.
I suffer on the Dreadmill as the local facility has them jammed up tight to the wall in front of the treadmill with 2 TV's mounted above your Normal Sightline so you are looking uphill to see the TV and it is to close for comfortable viewing. Also we don't have the extreme heat/humidity so outside in the Real World is just so much easier.3 -
I just found this page tonight. I'm set my August running goal @ 100 miles. If I make it, I'm buying myself the Garmin Vivoactive HR. As of tonight I'm at 23.09 miles.8

@mom3over40 I just noticed the same thing.
Adding up Activities doesn't give as high a total as the weekly/monthly total.
I wonder why.

Didn't drink or eat anything during the run. Just had my breakfast earlier, then a Winners gel before starting and an orange Gatorade at the end (never tried one before... it deliciously hit the spot!).
Beat my first HM by over 2 minutes, and this one was all hills whereas the first was all flat, so I'm very happy!
Feeling good.

@Amandajs232 Osteopenia, really? I am glad that you got your weight under control. The people who I was writing about waited too late. The human body is amazingly resilient and can reverse a lot of damage that we put on it except if it as the "point of no return", i.e. liver damage, emphysema, etc. You are so young that by the time it may become a problem, there will already be a cure for it....medical science is growing by leaps and bounds.
@mobycarp -I refuse to put stickers on my car but I have found magnets with similar sentiments (check out onemoremile.com) work amazingly well instead. I have even made some out of stickers I have received from races.
@AdrianChr92 - I want to be the female version of that guy still running at 92! I had all those problems - knees, back, etc.. and have not had ANY of those issues since I started strength training and running! Like I said before - I just wish I had started much earlier!
@Stoshew71 - awesome running already this month! WOW!
@juliet3455 - that is awesome how you started out not knowing how to swim and advancing to sprint tri's! I run and swim well but the cycling is another issue - oh I know how to ride a bike. I just never learned the art of changing gears and the hand brakes and all and it is very intimidating to me and we have bikes hanging in our garage!

Long run planned today....going to slow it waaay down at 70% max heart rate, hopefully 10 miles today...still very hot at Naptown....84 degrees, 91HI, and 52% humidity. Will check in later.
Achieved goal of 10 miles.....but unable to slow to 70% ...at all. First mile, averaged 75%, then next 6 miles at 80-82%; Felt good, breathing well, focused on posture, arm placement and slowing my steps. Then legs and feet became very sore and I felt like I had to pick up the pace to stretch out my hips...and I noticed that my heart rate decreased by 3%. Co-incidence? It happened on 3 other occasions in the last couple of miles...I really tried to focus on keeping the heart rate down, still at 79-83%. After completing mile 9.25, sprinted the last 3/4 mile...ended with 96% heart rate, but not really breathing hard or bent over trying to catch my breath like I usually am when going full out. ...it took forever (nearly 2.5 hours for 10 miles)....but going to try it again in a couple of weeks. Not sore at all. Even cut my recovery walk (jumping jacks, high knees, etc) short due to my husband needing me to help with the yard.

@Ohhim Ha I average around 146 on easy runs. I have a friend that averages 130. I wouldn't dream to average 115. For me that is like a decisive walk pace. My max is 200

@Amandajs232 @ereck44 Most people feel fine being overweight because they are young and the body can take the abuse. Almost all people that I know that disregard their bodies and reached the age of 40 are being hit with a hammer from all sides. It all comes crashing down. The body can't keep up so you start getting knee problems, back pain just to name the mild afflictions. Sure you can turn it around but it's not a good idea to let it get there in the last place. We had a guy here that was told by his doctor at 65 that his heart was a mess and if he didn't do a change he would die. He started running. He died at at 95 last year. Hit by a truck. He ran for 30 years and was doing mountain marathons at the age of 80 with no problems (he didn't like flat races). Most people can't walk at that age.

I love that story....it just shows how someone can really turn it around (their health)! But it is getting serious now....even my co-workers, who should know better, don't exercise and eat too many starches and fried foods...not to mention the sugary drinks. I have to drive by a McDonald's to go to my gym and their drive-thru has at least 10 cars waiting in that line, including at 2:30 in the afternoon.0 -

@Amandajs232, @ereck44, @shanaber - I also have been diagnosed with osteopenia, which was found after one of my parathyroid glands went crazy and my calcium levels were severely out of whack. Got that removed and all of the associated health problems are one of the reasons I finally woke up to needing to take care of myself and my health. I'm hoping when I have a repeat DEXA scan it shows improvement.

Hello everyone! I'm new to the group and new to running, relatively speaking. I was diagnosed with frozen shoulder in January and since my normal cardio was, and has always been, swimming, which I couldn't do, I decided to begin running. Sort of just designed my own c25k and started running with my dog on the horse trails around my house. I don't really know what I'm doing but I did buy a nice pair of running shoes.....
Anyway, shanaber suggested I join this group for whatever tidbits of wisdom I might read and also because you're a great group to be a part of.
I can now run a 5K pretty easily and signed up for my first 5K race which is in 2 weeks. I'm not nervous about it at all and am just looking forward to it. After that I'll begin training for a 10K in November.
I'm 66 and have been a member here since Sept of 2016. I've lost about 65 lbs since then and am maintaining my weight right now but could really stand to lose a few more lbs so we'll see how that goes. I also lift weights, something I really love doing and now that my shoulder is healed I'm also back in the pool.
Last week I fought off a cold so only ran on

Didn't get a chance to log yesterday but I got in a 7 mile Easy run with some strides. It rained on me again yesterday. Today was a scheduled 15 mile w/ 12 @ Goal MP. There were more storms on the radar coming so I figured I better just start out at pace and cool down with 3 if the storms come. I got about 3 miles in and the sky's opened up and soaked me for about 15 minutes. It cleared off to a light rain for another 3-4 miles before firing up again. About 9 miles in I knew I'd be lucky to to get 12 because ghe thunder was getting closer and closer and there were lightning strikes and cloud to cloud lightning getting close. At 10 miles I heard a transformer in the neighborhood blow and the street light go dark. I got back to the house a few minutes later and called it a day. My goal pace to start this training was 9:09 for a 4 hour marathon. This run averaged 8:57 but more importantly my HR was an average of 144, which is way below what my trainer thinks I should be shooting for, he said it should be about 155ish which is 15 bpm below my threshold. This week's total was 65.17 miles. Next week is a rest/recovery week, I think the schedule only calls for 60

Hello everyone. I have just discovered this thread! Yay!
I used to run a good bit then I stopped as I decided to travel! I am now starting Hals Half Marathon Intermidiate 1 program. Very excited, I start his properly tomorrow. I went for a test run today and was pretty pleased! short but sweet.
Based on his program I hope to log 50 miles for August starting from tomorrow.
I have added a few of you already, I hope you don't mind but I am looking for lots of motivation so please add me!

Today's run wasn't quite as easy as I'd hoped. I did 6 easy miles with a mother-daughter duo from my running group, then met a running buddy for 12 miles at race pace. We managed about 8 miles at race pace (~7 miles on the canal tow path) before my legs were like, "STOP RUNNING ON DIRT/GRAVEL/CRUSHED ROCK PLEASE." Did 10 miles at an 8:21 overall pace (would have been closer to 8:10 probably but pace was brought down (up? idk) because I walked some of mile 9 which was 9:45... oops). Then I clocked the last 2 miles separately because I knew it would be uphill and incredibly slow comparatively. The good news is that my race has 10 miles of tow path... but not consecutively. It's all broken up by pavement, so I can make up time/recover from the 2-3 mile cinder path segments. Phew!
This run proves to me that I really need to work on my non-pavement running stamina and my mental toughness. As soon as I get uncomfortable, my brain says, "Hey slow down!" But I need to figure out how to NOT give in to that feeling. Something to work on in the next 5 weeks leading up to Via.
Current Olympics status: Watching archery Mexico v. Georgia, because that's what NBCSN is airing because nothing has really started yet for the day. But I'll be watching women's road cycling and women's gymnastic prelims this afternoon!

@kristinegift about the mental toughness thing, I'm right there with you! Most of my runs are pretty flat with some BIG hills that give all the elevation. My September HM is the opposite all rolling without big nasty hills. Thing is my brain tells me it's way worse! So now I'm having to teach/remind myself that I've done the same or more elevation before. You'll do awesome come marathon time!2 -

With the weather down to a very comfortable 63 degrees this morning, I decided to just extend my slow social 10 mile Sunday group run into my first pre-Chicago 20 miler. It turned out that our slowest friend was hurt, and my other running partner was looking to add distance, so we ended up running 12 miles together at a reasonable pace before he returned home. At the 15 mile mark, I ran into another friend so we did 4 miles together and I headed home for my final mile. Looking at the weather, I seemed to time it well, as it was up to 77 degrees and was starting to get sunny.
With the social interaction, reasonable weather, and a relatively easy 10.5 pace, it was by far my easiest 20 miler, as I didn't even start feeling my usual knee soreness until the 18 mile mark. Given I'm trying to get in 3 more of those before Chicago on October 8th, but am mostly back in Florida, I think I may try my second one on Friday before my flight home, leaving me with just 2 to complete before starting to taper in mid September.

@AdrianChr92 - Given I did most of my Pittsburgh marathon training above a 11 pace (at around that 115 heart rate), except for 2 fast/quality sessions each week, and ran a BQ/3:08 while staying injury free, I'm definitely good with lots of slow/easy distance. Still, I'm picking up lots of extra fitness on the bike (500+ miles/month) and in the pool, so there may be more to it.6 -
Lovely run this morning with the decreased humidity. After I got going (have to run uphill to get out of my valley neighborhood) I felt much lighter and easier than yesterday, and my pace was a bit faster. I knew I wanted to do about 3 miles and I explored around a couple of different neighborhoods just off my usual route. And lo and behold I ended up at 3.18 miles right at Starbucks! How convenient! I used the facilities and treated myself to an iced skinny vanilla latte (love that I can purchase right from my phone) and then walked back home.

We actually got some thunderstorms and rain Thursday night / Friday, and the temps were cold enough on Saturday morning (lovely 19C/66F when I started!) that I decided to switch my planned weekend runs and do the long run on Saturday rather than on Sunday. I started by followed the part of the "art in the countryside" trail that I hadn't explored yet; then some forest paths, a few kms on country roads (needed to get home somehow ^^), and concluded with my little neighborhood forest.
This was the second run with my new hydration pack, and I still like it a lot. Halfway through the run yesterday I realised I could put my phone in one of the side pockets. I don't like those arm pouches, and having it in the shorts pockets irritates me as well (always seems like it's trying to pull the waistline down), so I literally ran all runs - including races - in the past few years with the phone in my left hand. NOT holding anything in my hand while running felt really weird!
Today's run was shorter, so I didn't take the backpack, and ran with the phone in the left hand again, where it belongs Yesterday was a distance PR for me, so I took it easy today, slept in and just ran the entire run at a very relaxed pace.

Funny note on pavement vs non-paved running:
There were about 5km during yesterdays run which I label "real trail" in my mind, i.e. the "really pay attention to avoid all the roots/rocks/mud" kind of trail. I had lots of fun, and I could have sworn I sped up while running those. But from looking at my splits, those were actually really slow. I guess taking quick, short steps to react to the terrain just feels much faster than it actually is...
Maybe I'll do my next long run completely on easy surface to see how the average pace compares - after all, the marathon I've planned in October will be on "boring" surface too, so I guess at least every second run should be on paved paths to prepare for that.
