Got in a nice middle distance ride on my fixie today up to a local greek neighborhood for a gyro and galaktoboureko, taking it relatively easy. Going to try out a century training ride tomorrow as my tri team is doing a 35 mile ride about 30 miles away, and I've been wanting to ride there/back for the past few weeks and finally figured out a relatively safe route. Just hoping the winds cooperate for the outbound segment.

In other news, I'm going to give the Pittsburgh->DC GAP/C&O ride another whirl at the end of September, as I have a weekend off between my Ironman 70.3 and the Chicago marathon, and a few friends expressed interest in joining me for the ride. I did it in late October of 2014 over 3 days, which was gorgeous leaf gazing season, but I'm planning it a month earlier and spreading it over 4 days so it doesn't become a daily race against the sun. I've already reserved a bike spot on the return train back to Pittsburgh, and now that I know that most B&B's have laundry facilities, I'll stick with my small camelbak backpack with 1 day change of clothes as it'll avoid the need for hauling saddle bags/panniers.

    8/1 - 15 miles (w. 10 mile solo time trial @ 23mph - out & back)
    8/3 - 33 miles (tri team ride)
    8/4 - 83 miles (solo long ride - 18.3mph / 143 watt avg)
    8/5 - 11 miles
    8/6 - 20 miles
    8/7 - 11 miles
    8/8 - 5 miles
    8/9 - 23 miles
    8/10 - 24 miles
    8/11 - 11 miles
    8/13 - 34 miles (18.9mph / 152 watts / 171NP)
    8/14 - 71 miles (18.7mph / 158 watts / 174NP)
    8/16 - 38 miles

    Total: 379 miles
    Goal: 621 miles
    Remaining: 242 miles

    2016 Races:
Granfondo FL century - 23.4mph TT segments
    Ironman Florida 70.3 - 5:07 / 2:39 bike split (21mph)
    Ironman Augusta 70.3 - 9/25
    Ironman Florida - 11/5

@UmmSqueaky - For tri watches, I've been racing with my running watch for the past 2 years (as it is waterproof and has an integrated heart rate monitor which is waterproof), but finally bit the bullet and snagged a refurbished Garmin 910xt for $125 as I needed something that could communicate with my power meter (totally unnecessary purchase unless you get really serious) and better track swims. For group rides, most groups have A/B/C rides with differing levels of intensity and seriousness. If you can find a C-ride, it is a good way to get your feet wet, learn all of the usual etiquette, and I've found that I've needed to expend about half of the power in the back/middle of a paceline vs. when I've needed to pull - more than offsetting my fears about safety/difficulty. Taking that approach lets me ride in 27-30mph A+ pacelines with the same average effort it would take me to ride on my own at 22mph (aside from a handful of extremely painful pulls which have definitely helped my race times/speeds). If you can average 18 for a triathlon bike leg, you'd fit in fine in any C ride, and even some B rides depending on your club's level of fitness.

Aug 13 - 408 km cycling (1485 min) ... no, that's not a typo. My husband and I rode a 400 km randonnee starting at 7 am on Saturday 13 August and finishing 24 hours and 45 minutes later. I have the story almost ready to post to my blog, but essentially ...

We've been training for this for the past two months and chose this particular one because it fit in our schedules and was relatively flat. We started strongly, but at the 200 km point, I broke a tooth (the tooth was in questionable condition to begin with) which made the remaining 200 km a little more challenging than I had hoped. Breathing through my mouth was painful, so I was reduced to breathing through my nose. And eating was painful, so I ran rather low on energy. I was hoping to finish within 24 hours, but I guess an extra 45 minutes wasn't too bad. :)
We rolled into the start location at 7:45 am on Sunday.

    Aug 15 - 0.5 km walking (7 min) ... airport.

Aug 16 - 3 km walking (35 min) ... to the beach and back to stretch things out.

    Tue 16 - 27.58 miles

    MTD 291.11 / 500, YTD 6840.85

Quick ride into work and largely effortless ride home with none of the expected DOMS from the previous day's gym, until I hit the 2 steepest hills.

Also saw this, which made a real change from a long stream of anonymous car, car, car, lorry, car, bus, car, car, ... that I normally see on my commute

@Ohhim Thanks for the feedback! I've been using my phone to track my biking and running, but can't use the phone during a USAT race, so I figure I should get a swim/bike/run tracker that I can use both in training and in a race. Definitely want something to track my swims, as I went into the tri completely blind as to time/speed (unsurprisingly it was slow, but it would be nice to know how slow). Probably don't need to track anything beyond the speed/distance but all the shiny gadgets, add ons and features are so tempting!

Now I just need to suck it up and gain some courage to join a group ride. There's a women only one based out of my LBS that I've been meaning to try all summer but alas they're all done for the season. Maybe I'll make it my goal for next year.

Ended up finding a good route to my team's group ride, but was running early, so took a longer detour there, then tried an interesting route home, making it a full 112 mile ride (same distance as my ironman). Felt OK after the ride, and held an 18 mph average for my solo riding + 33 miles in the middle with my group at 22mph (for an overall 19.1 average). Didn't do a ton of pulling for the group, but did my usual share at 24mph, which definitely reinforced the dangers of over-exerting myself mid-race (which the power meter should be good at discouraging). Still, as I was finishing the 112 miles, I started questioning my sanity as I'd then need to run a marathon at my ironman.

Overall it was a good experience, gave me some good feedback on nutrition (I think bonk breakers + cliff bars will win out for my solid food options mid-race as once my iced coffee, zone perfect bar, and gatorade heated up my stomach revolted), and I think I'll give another 2-3 of these a shot before November to try to get my nutrition and pacing sorted out.

    8/1 - 15 miles (w. 10 mile solo time trial @ 23mph - out & back)
    8/3 - 33 miles (tri team ride)

    8/16 - 38 miles

Just looked back at my last couple of posts and those YTD numbers went a tad optimistic!

Now fixed that teeny tiny error in my spreadsheet, and correct numbers to yesterday are

    MTD 321.65 / 500, YTD 1460.6

Wish I had managed nearly 7000 miles this year...

I upped my bike ride to 20 miles minimum each work day. I need to get a haircut so my hair doesn't look insane when I reach work. Still havn't bought any padded shorts yet, but hoping I can complete some 50 mile rides this weekend without them
