What's your food cravings and what do you use as a substitute?

Anything considered to be "comfort" foods. So, sweets, mashed potatoes with chicken and noodles on top, fresh baked bread with real butter, etc.
I don't really "substitute". If I am really craving it, I find a way to make a single serve portion that I can fit into my day OR I enjoy what I want and exercise more or eat less through out the day.
For example, last Friday I just was really craving Cracker Barrel for dinner. So, I decided we were going to eat there in the morning and basically fasted during the day (had a protein shake around 10:30 AM) so my calories fit for dinner. And that dinner made my day and it was delicious.
For me, it is all about choices because when I am really craving something, no substitute will work. I will over eat my way around the house avoiding a craving only to end up eating more calories than if I had just ate what I was craving in a sensible portion.7 -
chocolate - no subs, just control quantity3

I would agree. Substitutions don't make the craving go away. If I REALLY want something, I eat/drink it and I REFUSE to feel guilty about it.
Now, to answer your original question, I don't really crave certain foods, I crave textures. Crunchy, soft, creamy. That kind of stuff. I'm a weirdo.1 -
Cheese...
I still eat cheese, I just make sure I'm measuring it out properly. I'm not big on substitutions and I don't think they make cravings go away.4 -
Chocolate or cake with icing. A couple squares of dark chocolate (85% or 90% cocoa) is a fully satisfying substitution for me. I have dark chocolate almost every evening after dinner as a part of my daily calorie allowance1

Tex-Mex and Cake. I agree with what the others have posted so far. It's all about moderation. I don't eat it every day and usually not every week but if I am craving it bad enough I just plan my calories around it so I can have it without guilt. I've found that if I try to completely eliminate foods I end up failing because I obsess about the thing I can't have.2

Right now? Okroshka.. a summer cold soup. I don't have the main ingredient for it so I will have to wait till next year I guess I could make it with sour cream, but it's just not the same, so no substitute.
For other cravings when I have them, the only thing that helps me is to have the thing I'm craving and get it out of my system. Substitutes only make things worse for me, like when I was a kid and wanted legos but got cheap plastic blocks instead. I kept wanting the legos until I got them.1 -
sushi! to combat my craving i must hide far away in a log cabin4
-
Beer
Chocolate3 -
Desserts, just eat less than I actually want.1
-
Reese's Peanut Butter cups. I've been obsessed with them since I was a kid!4

Another vote for substitutions don't work when you really crave something.4

Thank you for all the responses. Ice cream and chips for me. (Not together haha) moderation doesn't help when their are so many calories in a very small serving. So I've been turning to weight watcher ice cream. They have lots of frozen treats that are delicious. Substitute chips all taste awful.0

Ice cream and chocolate candy. I don't do substitutions because I end up still craving the "real" stuff after eating the subs.
But I know there are some things I can't keep in the house. Peanut M & Ms--I've eaten a family size bag in 3 days. So. No.
But Wherthers Chewy caramels, a serving is 6 pieces for 170 calories, and I'm always able to stop at 3 pieces.1 -
I dont really have cravings. nothing is floating my boat at the moment.1

Homemade bread with sweet cream butter and apple butter1
-
Potato chips are my weakness! I usually try to resist the temptation but if I'm really needing something salty then I go for some crackers and hummus1
-
Burgers & BBQ.
What do I do as a substitute... extra cardio.4 -

Have you tried Quest chips? Thankfully I don't really crave chips, because I agree with you, those things are like eating high calorie air.
For ice cream, Halo Top and Enlightened have been pretty good replacements for when I need to eat a lot of it (I didn't really care for Artic Zero although the chunky pints are acceptable - the base is just pretty bland). Otherwise I can typically moderate it, thankfully.
But when I really crave something, it's usually carbs like bread, donuts, pizza, pasta, and usually when I'm PMSing... and yeah, nothing else satisfies the craving (although if I crave a Boston Cream donut, a toaster streusel usually works, and it's half the calories).1 -
Craving / Substitute
Ice cream / Breyers Carb Smart ice cream
Chocolate / 90% Lindt dark chocolate
Chips / Parsnip Chips (trader joes or whole foods sell them), almonds also satisfy my crunch cravings. Habenaro BBQ and salt and vinegar are my jam.
Pizza / Fathead pizza, cauliflower pizza, or 1/2 an english muffin baked with pizza toppings
Hot Chocolate / Chocolate tea with sugar free chocolate syrup to sweeten, maybe a little added HWC depending on macro needs
Cake / Low carb mug cakes (haven't tried these yet, but they exist and look delicious!)0 -
I haven't found Halo Top but I've heard their Lemon Cake and Birthday cake flavors are amazing! I've tried Arctic Zero and it was like licking freezer burn.2 -

Have you TRIED them together?! It's better than you think. Oh, and French fries and ice cream.
I'm sorry, I got off track. What was this thread about again?!2 -
Peanut butter - as in the WHOLE jar. At once.
PB2 powder lets me have quite a bit (48 grams dry) for 1/2 the calories of a normal 30 gram creamy PB.1 -
@Sarahb29 Halo Top birthday cake is delicious (and worth the occasional splurge of $6 for a pint)!!3
-
Cheez-Its, Cheese Nips, Cheddar Goldfish, Cheetos, Toast Chee sandwiches (cheese crackers & peanut butter), Doritos, cheese wontons, and nachos.
I, uh, might have a problem with cheese flavoring and carbs. Except, weirdly, cheddar popcorn, which I find disgusting.3 -
Beer. Substitute with canned sparkling water.0

Salt. Manifests in different foods.
No substitute. Just trying to watch my sodium intake.0 -
Cheese, Sour Cream, Ranch Dressing, pretty much anything dairy.
I use Greek Yogurt in place of sour cream, but everything else I pretty much just have to live without it or use a small quantity. Everyone has a reason they got fat, mine is cheese/dairy.2
